This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.
At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”
A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.
The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

Almost an entire generation can talk about their favorite primetime soap opera. The ’70s and ’80s had a fair share of these shows, offering plenty to talk about around the water cooler. One such primetime soap was Falcon Crest. It was popular in its day, with a lineup of big-name appearances. Now that Falcon Crest has been off the air for over 30 years, which cast members are still alive?

The season of rambling acceptance speeches is at hand, prompting that nasty question: Why can’t award winners learn how to edit their gratitude? Or find an editor to help?
The answer is in the process itself, which Cate Blanchett, upon winning over the weekend at the Critics Choice Awards for Tár, called a “patriarchal pyramid.” She should know because the pyramid has granted her more than 120 awards for her 70 movies (including two Oscars).
Whether in speeches or the projects generating them, filmmakers and writers classically distrust their editors. There’s even a new documentary about a classically feisty editing conflict. Titled Turn Every Page, it deals with books, not film — and, predictably, it’s too long.

“Today I lost my husband, partner, friend, hero, protector, handyman and cameraman extraordinaire,” she wrote on January 11. “So many memories to behold in the 47 years of our marriage that my heart is broken and my world so much smaller. He was larger than life, a dad, grandfather, uncle, brother and loved by so many friends. He touched so many lives. He is deeply missed. No more pain baby, rest in peace and go and tell your stories to all the angels in heaven.”

Hector Ramirez, a cameraman with 20 Primetime Emmy Awards who spent more than a decade on Dancing With the Stars and worked on the Oscars and the Grammys, Elvis Presley and David Copperfield specials and Frank Sinatra, Sting and Cher concerts, has died. He was 78.
Ramirez died Wednesday in his home in Granada Hills after a battle with esophageal cancer, his wife, Alma Ramirez, told The Hollywood Reporter.
From 2005-15, Ramirez handled a Steadicam on the first 21 seasons of Dancing With the Stars — he collected five Emmys for that show and a mirror ball trophy given to him by producers — and for America’s Got Talent.
The Colombian native also shot the Kennedy Center Honors, the Grammys, the Tonys, the Emmys (Primetime and Daytime), the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards, the SAG Awards, AFI Life Achievement Award specials, the MTV Video Music Awards, the Kids’ Choice Awards and the People’s Choice Awards.

“Saturday Night Live” executive producer Lorne Michaels has leapfrogged to the top of the Emmy nomination hill.
Now that the TV Academy has completed its producer vetting process and added those names to the final nomination tallies, Michaels has officially landed five nods this year. That gives him a lifetime total of 78 nominations, more than any other individual in Emmy history. (The Academy recently updated its summary of “most” Emmys to give Michaels the lead.)
This year’s tally pushes Michaels ahead of HBO documentary dynamo Shiela Nevins, who has 75, and camera operator Hector Ramirez (74). Ramirez had long been the Emmy nomination champ, but Nevins had been creeping up on him thanks to her documentary output. Last year, Nevins and Ramirez tied (at 74 a piece), and this year she scored one more nomination, pushing her ahead.

Law & Order: Svu‘s season ender on Wednesday added another tragic layer onto its stock-in-trade sexual violence by bringing illegal immigration — and New York’s status as a sanctuary city — into an already harrowing rape-and-murder investigation.

Well, the dust has settled on the 2016 Emmy Awards. We laughed, we cried, some of us ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Matt Damon was there. But in between all the wacky hijinks, there was some history being made. Let's take a look at what longstanding records got overturned last night, and just how much it's going to take to overturn them again. Julia Louis-Dreyfus takes Veep into the history booksLouis-Dreyfus picked up her sixth lead actress in a comedy Emmy award Sunday, and her fifth in a row. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey made history Thursday morning. The pals were nominated in the Guest Actress in a Comedy Emmy category for hosting “Saturday Night Live.”
That’s not unusual — “SNL” hosts are nominated for Emmys all the time. But here’s what’s unique: Poehler and Fey were nominated as a single, combined entity. Earlier this year, the TV Academy accepted their joint submission, and their names appeared together on nomination ballots.

That’s never happened in an acting category before because, well, a person is generally one person. But this was a unique circumstance: “SNL” guest hosts are eligible for guest star Emmys – but usually even comedy teams are nominated separately. (For example, Keegan-Michael Key is nominated this year for “Key & Peele” in the supporting comedy actor category, but Jordan Peele is not.

The most successful artist in Emmys history is camera operator Hector Ramirez. Over a career spanning four decades, he has filmed Richard Nixon in tears, a prepubescent Justin Timberlake and MTV's very first Video Music Awards. Along the way, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has rewarded Ramirez with 64 nominations and 17 wins. (HBO's Sheila Nevins has won more Emmys, 22, but nobody has more nominations.) A number of Emmy pundits assumed "Entourage" would be nominated for outstanding comedy series this year -- after all, it had scored a best comedy nod for the past three years, and the tendency of Emmy voters to repeat themselves is well-documented.
But the "Entourage" era at the Emmys appears to be at an end. (If it ever really was in the first place; despite the three straight best comedy noms, the show has never earned more than seven nominations in a single year). The HBO series got only one nomination -- for sound mixing -- this year, putting it in the company of 50-plus other shows with a single Emmy nod.
Other tidbits and fun facts from the nomination list:

Hector Ramirez, the most nominated individual in Emmy history, didn't have time to dwell on earning five more noms Thursday to bring his total to 60. He was rushing off to start work on yet another series, NBC's "America's Got Talent."
The veteran cameraman, who has won 15 times, is constantly in demand -- doing the Academy Awards, the Grammys, "American Idol" and dozens of others series and specials -- all without an agent or manager.
"You provide a service to the directors," Ramirez said, "and they keep calling. In this business, everything is word-of-mouth. You build up a reputation that carries you through day after day, year after year."
He got his first Primetime Emmy nom in 1978 and his first trophy, for a Neil Diamond special, in 1986.

It was a nod to the new and not much of a sendoff to the old that best describes the selection of 500-odd contenders for Emmy statuettes unveiled before dawn Thursday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The spunky Fox comedy-musical "Glee" and the off-kilter comedy "Modern Family" -- also produced by Fox but airing on ABC -- muscled their way into the key nomination categories, leading a number of fresh entrants into what in recent years had become a predictable parade of Emmy hopefuls.
Those two and several other mainstream newcomers to the fray also helped rebalance the scales between broadcast network fare and cable contenders, with the former contingent coming away with 247 total noms to cablers' 240.
