With the rise of the sound film ended his career and he retired from the film business.
The cinematographer Gustave Preiss was the son of the film pioneer Louis Preiss and therefore he came in touch with the film business at a young age.
Gustave Preiss left Switzerland and went to Germany where he entered the film business in 1916.
The height of his film career followed in the 20s and Gustave Preiss was the cinematographer for many productions.
To his well-known works of those years belong "Nathan der Weise" (1922), "Mutter und Kind" (1924), and "Die Frau, die jeder liebt, bist du" (1929).
He began to shot actual events with the camera for his father which were demonstrated to the audience in small cinemas.
