The Fighting Spirit Film Festival is a unique festival dedicated to Martial Arts films. Through martial arts cinema the organisers aim to entertain and inspire people, promote martial arts culture, and support those who have chosen it as a career. Now in its sixth year, the London edition returns with a full action-packed weekend at Stratford East Picturehouse! The 2021 edition and its poster are dedicated to martial artist Max Repossi and filmmaker/musician Steven Santa Cruz, who prematurely died this past year.
In addition to screening five feature films, it will also be showcasing 32 short films by independent film makers and artists from all over the world. On top of that, there will be live Martial Art demonstrations from various clubs throughout the two days. Attendees will be able to meet and mingle with all the performers, and also with actors and production staff from the films who will be at the event.

If you’ve never seen writer/director Charlie Nguyen’s 2007 martial arts flick “The Rebel”, you really should give it a try. It’s a damn fine action movie starring Nguyen’s brother Johnny Nguyen, Veronica Ngo, and Dustin Nguyen (no relation to Charlie or Johnny). Dustin’s moved on to bigger and better things, directing and starring in the very cool looking “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam”, while the Nguyen brothers have re-team on “Chinatown”, a gang film that, from the looks of the trailer, promises plenty of melodrama and action. As for the plot of “Chinatown”, the whole thing apparently concerns a gang war in Saigon’s Chinatown between two rival factions during a 24-hour period. The film’s Facebook Page probably has more on the plot, though of course it would help if you can read Vietnamese. Besides the Nguyen brothers, the film also stars Hoang Phuc Nguyen,...

Like it or not, we, the American people, have set a precedent for what makes a successful action movie – among them a ruthless but righteous protagonist, a villain with a taste for the theatrical, and of course chubby comic relief that gets plugged early on in the picture. Clash (Bay Rong) adheres to those principles as dogmatically as possible, and you know what? Despite a cautionary budget for making a full-fledged action picture, it works, at its best no worse than a low-rent Statham flick. The choreography is serviceable and occasionally impressive, and there’s plenty of plot to go around – only the third acts sags, and coming up on the heels of an exciting hour and twenty minutes, that’s a bargain.

This is the second film review in the coverage of Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival. To be honest with you, this is the worst film I've seen at the Fantasia Film Festival in all time. This means that if you've seen The Rebel, another Vietnamese martial arts film made by more or less the same people behind this film, don't raise your expectations. Besides, American actor/stuntman Johnny Nguyen (The Rebel) still doesn't know how to write a script.
Trinh (Veronica Ngo), a mercenary, has to carry seven missions at the request of Black Dragon (Hoang Phuc Nguyen), her boss. As a matter of fact, he promised her that Trinh will get her daughter back provided that the seventh mission is successfully fulfilled. She assembles a team with four other mercenaries. Their mission is to steal a very important laptop from a group of Frenchmen. However, things get rather complicated for the team.
