An opera singer by inclination and skill, Ms. Patricia Neway won the
Tony award for her performance as the Mother Superior in the original
Broadway production of "The Sound of Music".
She was awarded the 1960 Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award for Best Actress in a Feature Role in a Musical for her performance as Mother Abbess in the musical, "The Sound of Music," on Broadway in New York City.
She is survived by her niece, Michal Twine, and three nephews.
She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from the Notre Dame College of Staten Island in New York City with a major in sciences and a minor in mathematics. She later studied voice privately and at the Mannes Music School.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York but raised in Staten Island. Daughter of a printer who sung briefly in vaudeville. She studied piano. She was inspired to pursue a singing career by the mother superior of her high school.
