BBC One has halted work on its new drama based on the Shannon Matthews kidnapping.
The broadcaster has been working on the story, as revealed by Jeff Pope of ITV Studios' drama unit at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in August. Sheridan Smith was reported to be playing Shannon's mother Karen.
The Sunday People had claimed that work on the project had been suspended because of fears it could affect negotiations over the license fee in 2016, when the drama was due to air.
However, a BBC spokeswoman has said it is "misleading" to state that work has been paused for anything other than editorial reasons.
"Whilst we remain committed to this project, we have decided to pause in order to progress some important production and editorial matters," said a representative for the corporation.

First, he lifted the Knicks back into the playoff hunt. Now Jeremy Lin has put them back on TV.
The Madison Square Garden Co. said Friday it had reached a tentative deal to put Knicks games back on television for some 2 million Time Warner Cable subscribers in the New York area. New York state officials and the NBA had pressured the companies to settle.
A dispute over fees had left subscribers unable to watch the Knicks since Jan. 1, meaning they couldn't tune in to watch the undrafted point guard from Harvard come off the bench to lead the team to seven straight wins and a 15-15 record. Fans complained and called for a quick resolution.
One state official close to the negotiations said Lin's phenomenal run forced the deal, along with the recent play of the Rangers, whose hockey games are also carried on the Msg network.

New York — Through a rap verse, Jay-z has confirmed the birth of "the most beautiful girl in the world" – his newborn daughter.
The song "Glory" made its debut on his social website Life and Times on Monday – two days after he and Beyonce reportedly gave birth to a daughter, Blue Ivy.
Reps for the superstars repeatedly declined requests for comment from The Associated Press about whether the birth had occurred, as first reported by E! News over the weekend. But Jay-z's sweet song gives fans the details, and more: "You're my child of a child from Destiny's Child."
In the song, Jay-z talks about where the child was conceived (in Paris) and even reveals that Beyonce had a miscarriage at one point.
"Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you'd disappear/But nah baby you magic."
The song's refrain is: "The most amazing feeling I feel...

New York -- Folk music legend Pete Seeger and `60s folk singer Arlo Guthrie joined Occupy Wall Street demonstrators Friday in their campaign against corporate greed while residents near the protest park encampment pushed to regain some peace and quiet in their neighborhood.
Seeger joined in the Occupy Wall Street protest Friday night, replacing his banjo with two canes as he marched with throngs of people in New York City's tony Upper West Side past banks and shiny department stores.
The 92-year-old Seeger, accompanied by musician-grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger, composer David Amram, and bluesman Guy Davis, shouted out the verses of protest anthems as the crowd of about 1,000 people sang and chanted.
They marched peacefully over more than 30 blocks from Symphony Space, where the Seegers and other musicians performed, to Columbus Circle. Police watched from the sidelines.

New York — The producers of the troubled "Spider-Man" musical on Broadway said they have enacted new safety measures ordered by the government and will resume performances on Wednesday night.
A spokesman for "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark," Rick Miramontez, said producers met with federal and state labor officials and the Actors' Equity Association on Tuesday to discuss additional safety measures after a performer doing an aerial stunt fell about 30 feet. He said the measures will be enacted immediately but did not immediately say what changes the show would make.
Producers postponed the musical's scheduled Wednesday matinee, but the web-slinger will take the stage again on Wednesday night.
Firefighters were called to the Foxwoods Theatre at about 10:45 p.m. Monday after the 31-year-old performer fell near the end of the latest preview performance. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Alan Carr has apologised for dedicating his British Comedy Award to the mother of Shannon Matthews. The 32-year-old picked up the Best Comedy Entertainment Personality gong at Saturday's event, then told journalists backstage that Karen Matthews would be a "dream guest" on his Celebrity Ding Dong. Carr wrote on his website: "Just a quick note to apologise to all the people who were offended by me 'dedicating' my award to Karen Matthews. For those of you who have enjoyed my comedy and seen my act over the last seven years you all would have got used to my tongue in cheek style and near the knuckle observations. "Just to put the record straight I was being ironic, these (more)...
