Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
We’re into the thick of it now, aren’t we? Ten entries into the so-called Amityville franchise and it’s all cheap IP cash-grabs from here on out.
I’m hopeful that some of these films will lean into the utter ridiculousness that has been a hallmark of the best entries thus far, particularly given the inevitable decline in budget. Let’s not kid ourselves: many of the films from here on out are going to be dodgy, but that’s half the fun, right?
What’s exciting about this Amityville IP editorial series is examining how each film puts its own unique stamp on the same general premise. For The Amityville Haunting, the first new film in six years, that unique stamp is found footage.

Alright, let’s forget these late Winter blues! Let’s head to the multiplex and see Dwayne Johnson (still “The Rock” to ‘rasslin’ fans forever) blast the bad guys! Those sleazoids don’t stand a chance against him, he’s invincible, he’s unstoppable, he’s…tearing up? And getting beaten up? This movie is inspired by true events, so he’s playing pretty much a real guy. And what’s Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon doing here? This movie’s full of surprises (the least of which is the fact that this early year release is not a complete dud). Mind you there should be enough destruction to please his audiences. But the big shocker is that it has a message (that’s hammered in with a factoid after the final fade out). Looks like Mr. Johnson is looking to expand his “brand” (and stretch his acting muscles) with his newest effort,...

Director: Geoff Meed.
Cast: Devin Clark, Jon Kondelik , Jason Williams, Nadine Crocker, Gracie Largent, and Amy Van Horne.
The entire Amityville House fiasco has been nothing but one huge trial and tribulation. And just when movie producers think they cannot leave a dead horse alone, a new movie has been made about the “most recent” events that have happened on 108 Ocean Avenue.
But to no one’s knowledge and very little national press, the house has changed its look—the building’s iconic face has been redesigned. Also, it has has had several occupants since its days of being haunted. None of them have reported about the house being spooked, and hardly any interest has developed since that last toilet mysteriously flushed (one of the many supposedly paranormal events that allegedly happened). But with this movie, maybe all this product is doing is to keep the most famous case that...
