The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will hand out Emmys in 37 categories tonight, with this year’s second and third ceremonies set for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday. All three will have limited audiences but no red carpet. An edited version of the Creative Arts Emmys will air at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 18.
Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian come into the Emmys with a leading 24 noms apiece. Among platforms, as usual the fight is between HBO and Netflix, with the combined HBO and HBO edging the streaming giant in total noms 130-129. Disney+ has 71 noms, following by NBC with 46 — a strong showing for a broadcast network in the age of streaming.

After Lily Gray died at the hands of Michael Weston in last week's The Following, loyal Joe Carroll follower Emma Hill suffered a similar fate in Monday's episode, "Silence." Here's how it all went down: After Claire Matthews sent a cryptic message informing Joe that she was alive, the serial killer/cult leader drafted Emma

"The Following" continues to confound us. It seems like each season starts out promisingly, goes off the rails in the middle, and then comes back around at the end. And here we are near the end of Season 2 with Episode 2.13, "The Reaping," on its way. Will it follow the same pattern?
Again we ask: Why the hell does this show need 15 episodes per season? Stick with 12, or 13 at the most, and maybe things will improve. Powers-that-be, are you listening?
In any event, here are some stills and a new promo!

Joe’s hold over his new religious cult strengthened as he began teaching them how to be killers in The Following’s “Teacher’s Pet.”
Claire Matthews Lives
The episode began and ended with Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) in bed with the self-serving-journalist-turned-ally, Carrie Cooke (Sprague Grayden). Meanwhile, Mike (Shawn Ashmore) is secretly meeting with a not-so-dead Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea). Contrary to what Ryan, and the viewers, believed, Claire did not die as a result of the stabbing that ended the first season of The Following. She survived and was put into witness protection with her son. Mike convinced her to go, as she might be targeted by any remaining members from Joe’s killer cult, and lied to Ryan when he told him that Claire had died. Now that Joe is alive and in the public eye, Claire has demanded a meeting with Mike to know what, exactly is going on.

Review Ron Hogan 19 Mar 2014 - 07:06
Camp and brain-rotting it may be, but The Following's second season is always entertaining. Here's Ron's review of Unmasked...
This review contains spoilers.
2.9 Unmasked
I have to say that the one thing missing from Joe's cult last season has been supplied this season thanks to Micah and Julia's little community of berobed killers in the making. It seems like all the classic cults, barring the Manson family, have had a serious religious bent. Joe's first cult was kind of Manson in its genesis, but its execution—a big house full of people and lots of bribery and whatnot of local officials—was more like something out of the Jonestown playbook. This season's cult, Aka Korban, provides some much-needed religious lunacy to go along with the compound setting that's apparently within a few minutes' drive of New York City.
The takeover's been pretty obvious from the beginning.

You just can't trust the Internet. For a short while there was a story on TVGuide.com about Natalie Zea returning for Season 2 of "The Following," which of course got picked up by other sites, but now the original article has been removed. Hmm... a case of too much information too soon?
In any event, in a nutshell, most viewers thought Zea's character, Claire Matthews, was killed at the end of Season 1 so her return - if indeed it is happening - is a bit of a change of course for the show, especially since the actress (who'll next be seen in CBS' "Under the Dome") said, “My concern, and [series creator] Kevin Williamson’s concern, was always, is there more story to tell with Claire? And we both discovered that maybe there wasn’t.” However, Fox execs weren't so quick to let their leading lady go so the season finale was edited two different ways.

At the end of "The Following" Season 1 finale, the fates of both Kevin Bacon's Ryan Hardy and Natalie Zea's Claire Matthews were up in the air. With Ryan and Claire each sporting some seriously fatal-looking knife wounds lying on the floor of Ryan's kitchen, many wondered if Season 2 of "The Following" would follow the same format of the first season but with different characters.

Major Spoiler Alert: Stop reading right now if you wish to remain in the dark regarding a key storyline on The Following Season 2.
Natalie Zea has confirmed to William Keck of TV Guide Magazine that she will reprise the role of Claire Matthews next year... although she came close to turning down a new deal.
"My concern, and [series creator] Kevin Williamson's concern, was always, is there more story to tell with Claire?" Zea said. "And we both discovered that maybe there wasn't."
So what changed between the end of The Following Season 1, which concluded with both Claire and Ryan Hardy being stabbed, and now?
Fox executives were apparently unhappy with the initial plan of killing Claire off and convinced both the actress and producers to keep her around. In what capacity? That much is uncertain.
But you can be sure we'll ask when on the red carpet with The Following...

Seems as though "The Following's" Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea) will survive the vicious knife attack that occurred in the season finale. The in-demand actress has inked a deal to return to the Fox thriller for Season 2.
Confirming her eleventh hour contract renewal, Zea says the deal nearly didn't happen. "My concern, and [series creator] Kevin Williamson's concern, was always, is there more story to tell with Claire? And we both discovered that maybe there wasn't," Zea says.

Claire Matthews is a survivor — or is she?
Natalie Zea will return to The Following for Season 2, after signing an eleventh-hour deal with the Fox drama. Her comeback, however, could be short-lived.

Speaking with TV Guide Magazine, Zea would not disclose how long she’ll be sticking around the Fox thriller, indicating that the near-death events of the first season’s cliffhanger could lead to a goodbye arc or a new storyline.

Talk about passion! Actress Natalie Zea and her longtime boyfriend Travis Schuldt are engaged. After 10 years together, the couple - who met when they costarred on the soap opera Passions - are making it official after a proposal in Kauai, Hawaii. "He wanted to make sure he gave the car a thorough test drive before he bought it," Zea, 38, tells People. Aside from his role on Passions, Schuldt, 38, also starred on Scrubs, while Zea, who played Winona on Justified, currently stars as Claire Matthews on The Following.

It seems Natalie Zea was feeling a little restless what with The Following, where she plays Claire Matthews, on hiatus in between its first and second seasons. Instead of enjoying a vacation from this years more bizarre hits, she decided she wanted to go out and snag a second job. Oh, I’m sorry, make that a third job. She still managed to recur on Justified while working full time on The Following. She must really love working. Now she’s going to be recurring on CBS’s upcoming summer series, Under the Dome, in a role that is quite different compared to those she’s played the last couple of years.
While Zea has always been great at playing tough and sexy characters, she’s always managed to be the strong woman behind a stronger man. The Following had paired her up with Kevin Bacon’s Ryan Hardy and...

Fans of The Following may need to wait until next season to learn the fate of Claire Matthews, but we can now confirm the future of her portrayer:
Natalie Zea is headed to CBS.
The busy actress - who still plays a role on Justified as well - has been cast in a "continuing" role on Under the Dome, as teased by executive producer Neal Baer to William Keck of TV Guide Magazine.
Look for Zea to make "an alarming appearance in a few episodes beginning in Episode 9," Baer said. "She plays Maxine, and if you think [the show's big baddie] Jim Rennie (Dean Norris) is trouble, you haven't seen trouble yet. And she'll be connected to a number of our characters."
Under the Dome kicks off on June 24 and is based on a Stephen King novel of the same name. It centers on a New England town that suddenly finds itself surrounded by a shield of some kind.

It seems like all the pieces are falling into place for Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) on Fox's The Following. The FBI's technology has been compromised, Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is nearing his breaking point, and Joe's ex-wife Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea) is en route to the mansion where Joe and his followers are hiding out. Heck, Joe's even starting to bond with his son Joey (Kyle Catlett) — over s'mores, no less!
But hold on a minute. According to Purefoy, this part of the story might be only the beginning of Joe's endgame — and his "super objective" remains to be seen.

We've all heard stories about mothers who have lifted cars off their children in moments of sheer parental panic, and according to Natalie Zea, The Following is about to show fans what Claire Matthews is really made of.
Beginning with tonight's episode and carrying through the final five chapters of season one, Joe Carroll will push his ex-wife to the breaking point, turning her into an entirely different person. That was just one of the tantalizing teasers Zea dropped when we chatted on the phone about tonight's game-changing The Following!
ETonline: When we last spoke, you'd only filmed one episode of the show, but we were both excited by the promise of that pilot. What's it been like to see the show live up to, and in some ways exceed, that?
Natalie Zea: Well, to be honest, my expectations were right on target. It's funny because people were nervous in anticipating what would happen, but I wasn't...

While we haven’t seen a lot of Claire Matthews on the last handful of episodes of Fox’s The Following, that all changes tonight.
But can Claire escape the clutches of her evil ex-husband while still getting her kidnapped son back?
I grabbed some time late last week with Natalie Zea and chatted with the actress about what we can expect in the coming weeks, how Claire truly feels about Joe and Ryan Hardy, as well as what we can expect when she pops back up on the last two episodes of this season’s Justified Season 4...

Is The Following making a point about random violence, or just enjoying it? Here's Ron's review of Love Hurts...
This review contains spoilers.
1.9 Love Hurts
There's a certain kind of casual violence that has infected The Following that I'm not sure about. In certain situations, like tonight's harpoon gun incident or when Ryan randomly guns down Joe's cultists, it's borderline funny. For instance, tonight Ryan shot Louise - she's the blonde woman who gutted a random security guard a few episodes ago - in mid sentence without even blinking. I'd say that's a spoiler, but nobody really cares about Louise and she's basically another random cultie there to take a bullet for Joe. In other circumstances, the random violence is kind of disturbing, such as when one of many women named Claire Matthews dies via defenestration or when random helpful strangers are gutted.
That's this week's scheme du jour.

Finally, The Following starts asking the same questions that we've all been yelling at the screen for weeks, starting with, "How did Joe Carroll escape in a helicopter in broad daylight?" Pretty soon they'll have characters on screen asking things like, "How many people live in Richmond, anyway?" and "How many dimes can I fit into Kevin Bacon's adorable frown lines?" and "Who writes this stuff?"
At a videoconference debrief with The Washington Brass, Debra "The Brass Cupcake" Parker (Annie Parisse) reports that they have thus far uncovered 47 false identities for Joe's prison visitors. In other words, it is officially easier to get into a maximum security prison to visit a notorious serial killer than it is to get a library card. (You don't have to bring a utility bill with you to the prison!)
They now think that's it's possible that there are over 100 cultists, ranging from bored...

“Love Hurts”
Written By: Adam Armus and Kay Foster
Directed By: Marcos Siega and Adam Davidson
Original Airdate: 18 March 2013
In This Episode...
Joe invites his followers to finish “our” story and wants to know what inspires them. First up is Amanda, a woman in her early thirties who reacts to Joe like a teenager at Justin Bieber concert. Her first kill takes place at a diner in Union Hill, Pennsylvania. Two women are having lunch at a diner. One of them gets up to go to the bathroom, and Amanda takes her place at the table, startling the blonde. She needs a favor - she wants the stranger to tell Ryan Hardy that love hurts. The second woman gets back from the bathroom and slides in next to her friend. She is scarcely there for a few seconds before Amanda shoots her, under the table, with a spear gun.

Everybody's favorite not-gay couple -- or are they? -- on "The Following" turned up this week. They'd sought refuge at Jacob's vacation property where Paul wasn't doing so well. Jacob's mother was a nurse, and though she was horrified at what the news was saying about them, she still checked in on Paul. She told Jacob that without surgery and a hospital, he'd surely die.
Rather than allow himself to be turned in, Paul told Jacob to kill him. Jacob owed him, after all. Flashbacks revealed when Paul first found out that Jacob had never killed anyone, and how he'd kept that secret from Emma. Jacob honored his vow and his closest friend, Paul, became his first-ever victim.
Emma, meanwhile, had been vehemently ignoring Jacob's attempts to contact her while she was trying to make moves on Joe Carroll. Moves that were working on one level, but she was never...

A crazy woman writing her own chapter of Joe Carroll's murderous story, several senseless murders, and one love affair gone horribly awry: Just another Monday night with "The Following." As this show goes on I'm increasingly convinced that that 16-episode season is just way too long for a show that is running on some of the same plot devices in order to maintain suspense. The primary tension in "Love Hurts" is the love triangle introduced in the premise: Ryan and Joe both love the same woman, Claire Matthews. The manifestation of the triangle is a bit different -- there's always...

It's become pretty obvious that Joe Carroll has a lot of followers, some who love to party at the cult mansion and others who are desperate to add their chapter to his twisted story of death.
This week, Amanda joined the ranks of the less-than-developed followers, serving as something of a Terminator in hunting down any women with the name Claire Matthews. It was an obvious effort to hurt Ryan because of his own love for Claire, as much as it was to lure the real Claire out of hiding.
The ploy itself was intriguing in that it was a unique way to cause more chaos, but Amanda felt like such a stock crazy bad guy that anyone could have fulfilled her role. Although, I have to admit, I'm pretty surprised no one was able to stop the skinny white girl at any point besides Ryan's final standoff.

1.6 The Fall
The story of The Following thus far has been one of squandered potential. After a pretty good pilot that set a lot of interesting things into motion, the show hasn't really followed up on that in any really satisfactory way. However, this week, everything seemed to click into place for the programme. Indeed, this might be the best episode since the season opener. That may or may not be high praise depending on what you feel about the show, but I'm still kind of on board with it, and this week was a really good continuation of last week's instalment.
Kevin Bacon is brilliant. Nowhere is this brilliance more obvious than on this particular programme. Bacon isn't given the best stuff to...

Paul doesn’t like kids, and doesn’t like that Jacob and Emma are a couple. Despite what the guys say, it is clear that Paul has a crush on Jacob.
Now that Ryan and the FBI have Emma’s real identity, they find her house. It is a modest two-story that looks like a flop house. Every wall is covered with psychotic ramblings, Poe quotes,...

As Claire Matthews on Fox's "The Following" (Episode 2 airs Monday, January 28 at 9 p.m. Est), Natalie Zea is caught between two equally compelling -- and equally dangerous -- men: her ex-husband Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), the psychotic serial killer responsible for murdering 14 female students, and Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), the troubled FBI agent who finally brought Carroll to justice in 2003.
Now, Carroll's followers have kidnapped Claire's son Joey (Kyle Catlett) and Claire is slowly unravelling as Carroll's master plan unfolds. And Claire's storied history with Ryan only complicates matters further. HuffPost TV sat down with Zea earlier this month to discuss the role on "The Following," Claire's relationship with Ryan, and whether she will be a typical damsel in distress as the series progresses.
What initially attracted you to the role of Claire?
Funny enough, it wasn’t necessarily the role -- rather, it was the script as a whole.

Last week The Following terrified over 10 million viewers with its pilot episode, but you best believe me when I say that you ain't seen nothing yet!
Not only does tonight's second episode begin to shine a light on my favorite storyline, but it deepens every character's backstory and reveals previously unseen connections. Like with Claire Matthews and Ryan Hardy, whose hinted at history comes into full view over the next two episodes as Claire continues to fret over her abducted son while avoiding all dark corners.
Earlier this month, I caught up with Natalie Zea to talk about her attraction to Claire and The Following at The Television Critics Association Press Tour.
ETonline: When you read this script, what made you want to play Claire?
Natalie Zea: I have to say it was less about the character and more about the script as a whole. I was so confused by what I was reading; was it...
