In the world of anime, there are childhood classics like Pokémon, Dragon Ball, and Naruto, and then there’s Death Note. Ever since the anime premiered in 2006, it solidified its status as a cultural icon, earning itself the honorable Animation of the Year award in 2007. The series stands apart from the other series in the Shonen genre because it does not rely on fast-paced action sequences to keep its audience hooked. Instead, it features a tug-of-war psychological warfare between Light Yagami and L.
Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba
Death Note is probably the most renowned work by Tsugumi Ohba, as the manga series was always a step ahead, forcing its reader to give their complete attention, or else they’ll lose the thread that weaves the story together. However, the manga would have never existed if Ohba hadn’t decided to alter their career, purely to survive.

Tatsuki Fujimoto has taken a lot of creative liberty when it comes to Chainsaw Man part 2. Not only did the pacing of the series change considerably, Denji, the titular character, saw his appearances in the manga limited in order to accommodate Asa Mitaka, who was undeniably the new main character.
Denji wasn’t the only familiar face missing from Chainsaw Man’s second part. Fan favorites like Kishibe seemingly vanished entirely.
However, Csm Chapter 162, which released on April 10, 2024, brought a sigh of relief and a surge of excitement among fans yearning for any breadcrumbs regarding these characters.
In this chapter, Quanxi, another popular character from Part 1, mentioned an advice from an old friend. Savvy readers were quick to deduce that this friend was none other than the enigmatic Kishibe.

The anime fans were eagerly waiting for the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards result. Anime like Jujutsju Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Oshi no Ko, etc., dominated the award ceremony with multiple award wins. Jujutsu Kaisen won the most, with eleven awards. Chainsaw Man season one had a few nominations, but it could not perform as the fans had hoped. Denji and Pochita’s friendship was not strong enough.
But there was a certain category that the fans had hoped for a different result. During the award ceremony, Jujutsu Kaisen won the Best Opening Sequence award. Even though fans voted it to be the best, many believe that it would have been given to Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man’s opening theme broke a record that even One Piece failed to achieve.

One of the greatest things about anime is that you really can’t judge a book by its cover. For example, you can have a series as wholesome as Fruits Basket be deeply buried in family trauma while a series as delightfully chaotic as Chainsaw Man can make you appreciate the self-care that comes with finally having a second to wash your face, brush your teeth, make a cup of coffee, read the paper and do some cleaning. That said, the Chainsaw Man anime is wild! Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man has torn through its competition as one of 2023’s most popular anime obsessions and its English dub has met just as much acclaim as the original. Makima is a mysterious and occasionally malevolent force of nature who works as well as she does because of Suzie Yeung’s committed performance as the devious devil hunter. Makima is one of Yeung’s biggest roles, but she’s hardly a newcomer. At this year’s Anime Milwaukee, Suzie Yeung reflected to Den of Geek upon her eclectic career and opened up on the whirlwind experience of playing Chainsaw Man’s Makima, the type of characters that get her the most excited, and what her anime Holy Grail dream role would be.

As we mentioned many times before, the shonen anime industry, after some years of producing many titles that just seemed to copy “One Piece”, “Bleach” and “Naruto”, moved towards other directions in order to reinvigorate the category. These elements ranged from parody of the cliches of the genre, to sociopolitical comments and many more, that actually allowed the titles of the category to be enjoyable by a more mature audience. The creators of “Chainsaw Man” took another direction by presenting a title that is definitely not for children due to intensely gory violence, sexual connotations, and rather intricate case and characterization, not to mention a main character who is unlike anything we have seen in the past.

In the age of streaming and instant gratification, most viewers use the "skip credits" function available on most streaming platforms more effortlessly than they should. With this ability also comes creatives who find new and interesting ways to keep viewers watching until the last second of the show is over. Some series have found ways to make credits engaging, whether it's the opening or ending. There are shows like "Peacemaker," with its hilarious opening dance number to the comedic tags at the end of every credits sequence, and "The Sandman," which featured end credits displaying unique art to be admired by viewers. Attempts to avoid credits being skipped has bred some exciting innovation.
Then there's the anime genre, which uses openings and endings in unique ways that are almost impossible to skip. "Chainsaw Man" is a notable exception that came out this past fall anime season, as it took its credits to a new level.

The first season of "Chainsaw Man" was one of the most anticipated releases of the year, posed as the likeliest successor to the edgy, violent "Attack on Titan" — but with a healthy dash of dumb humor. Now that the season has ended, it's hard to argue against Studio Mappa's adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga delivering on fans' expectations, delivering energetic animation, great voice acting, and some stunning visual choices that shine a light on the author's cinematic influences.
Episode 12, in many ways, feels like an archetypical season finale for an action shonen anime. "The Future Rules!" That's the horror that awaits Aki when he enters the chambers of the devil he is asked to make a contract with, and in true "Chainsaw Man" fashion, the Future Devil is a character unto himself. Rather than a deep and sinister voice, he is a jolly good fellow with a high-pitch voice, a very cool and sinister Groot-like design, and an overly energetic attitude towards the future, which indeed rules. Granted, he seems to be mostly excited about the horrible, death-filled future that awaits the characters more than anything else.
This includes Aki, who is asked to look straight into the Future Devil's gut, which hides a giant eye, so the devil could look into Aki's future. What he sees is enough to offer Aki a contract, one that demands so much less than the literal arm and leg he asked the other devil hunters he has a contract with.

After two weeks of incredibly tense action, "Chainsaw Man" takes a step back and allows the characters a moment to breathe and grieve their fallen comrades.
We catch up with Aki, who is alive but in a hospital with severe injuries. Understandably, he breaks down, having lost possibly the only person in the world he cared for. Making matters worse, Aki learns he only has two years left to live, after using the Curse Devil sword during his fight with Katana Man. What follows is the kind of minimalist, performance-focused scene that Studio Mappa has excelled at with this adaptation. Using extreme close-ups, a cigarette falling, a failing lighter, the trembling of Aki's arms convey all the emotions of the scene without resorting to grand visuals or dialogue to explain things. It is often theorized that the "Chainsaw Man" manga feels so unlike anything on Weekly Shonen Jump because it was the magazine's way of compensating for rejecting "Attack on Titan" back in the day. If it wasn't already clear by now how violent and subversive "Chainsaw Man" is, then this episode doubles down on the shock and gore aspect of the show in delightful ways, all of which revolve around Makima.
One of the best characters in an already rather phenomenal show, Makima is a clever take on the archetypical female anime character, usually quiet and stoic, ready for our protagonist (and the audience) to obsess over because of how unobtainable she is. Yet "Chainsaw Man" never downplays how obviously manipulative she is to Denji, and how sinister her superficial pleasantries actually are. We understand why Denji jumps at the chance of doing anything she asks, but we also understand...

There it is. The moment it hits the fan and "Chainsaw Man" descends into madness. Last week saw the end of the prologue, as we now know all the major players and their deal, have a grasp of the stakes, the main conflict and villain, and our hero's goals.

Here it is, the episode "Chainsaw Man" has been building towards, the one that will filter out normies and find the real degenerates who are the target audience, the moment the prologue ends and the real show begins. So far, the anime has been doing a good job of introducing its idiosyncratic world and characters and showing off its eclectic influences. This week, however, we finally stop getting hints and get into the full sense of depravity, disgust, and hilarity that made Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga a hit.
We pick up where we left off, with Denji throwing himself into the mouth of the Eternity Devil. The mad lad quickly realizes that it doesn't matter how hurt he is or how much blood he's losing because the eternity devil is endless and Denji can simply drink his blood to heal and keep going. "I'm a f***ing perpetual motion machine!

"Chainsaw Man" took the world by storm long before it received its anime adaptation from the talented Studio Mappa. The manga, created by mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto and released in the pages of "Weekly Shonen Jump" from 2018-2020, is often praised for its hyper-violent action and surprisingly hefty (and sometimes existential) story. In a world where "devils" are born as real-world manifestations of human fears, "Chainsaw Man" centers around Denji, a young man in poverty looking to get out of debt and live the good life by being a devil hunter. It isn't until he's on the brink of death that his partner and pet Pochita (the Chainsaw Devil) make a contract with him, giving Denji the powers of Chainsaw Man.
When it came to the anime adaptation, there were lofty expectations not just for the animation of "Chainsaw Man," but also for the voice cast that would bring the characters to life.

Life is full of disappointments. Professional, personal, economic, big and small, in your youth and in your adulthood, in love and in being single. But in "Chainsaw Man," Denji is a character who hasn't experienced disappointment, not really. After all, he hasn't even come close to achieving his dreams, until now. Of course, by this point, he's accomplished everything he's ever dreamed of, from eating good food to sleeping in a real bed, to his ultimate goal of touching boobs. Unfortunately for Denji, he's finding out life is full of disappointments.
Picking up right after the cliffhanger of last week, "Chainsaw Man" actually goes ahead and shows Denji fondling Power's chest in rather detailed and fluid animation. And then she reveals she padded her bra, which sends Denji stumbling as his dreams shatter, and the animation becomes uglier, less heightened and closer to reality, with each subtle muscle movement interminably long and unpleasing.

This week we get our first actual meal, mixing stunning action, great moments of juvenile humor, exquisite animation, and a lot of heart. The result is absolutely delicious.
"Rescue" begins with a flashback showing Power making a life with her cat Meowy, living in the woods and hunting wild bears for food. After Meowy is kidnapped by the Bat Devil, Power contemplates why she is actually going along with the devil's plan, and risking her life to find him a human to feed on just to save a cat. Despite her being a fiend, and despite her manic behavior, Power genuinely cares about her cat, and after a gross speech about her desire for blood, she realizes she...

There's three key elements to the winning formula of "Chainsaw Man," all perfectly balanced things that so neither go overboard — 2000s sex comedy humor, extreme violence, and a poignant and bleak world with gravitas. We've seen the first episode dive into the latter two, introducing us to a dark and violent world; the second episode leaned into the first, showing how immature its protagonist is. Now, the third episode mixes the show's signature horny humor with extreme violence for a funny, gnarly, thrilling episode that still finds time to touch on the bleak reality of its world — and make lots of boob jokes.
We start right where we left off after Power obliterated the Sea Cucumber Devil and smashed it to bits. Makima scoffs at them for making a mess, as they could get in legal trouble for the destruction of property. "Chainsaw Man" is continuing to paint the image...

In its second episode, "Chainsaw Man" introduces all the remaining components for a winning shonen anime: an elite organization fighting violent forces, a team of supporting characters our hero will work with, and a goal our hero wants to accomplish.
Except, of course, all of these are twisted through the "Chainsaw Man" lens. The elite organization? A unionized office job with occasional field work. His co-workers? A bunch of people who literally treat Denji like a dog and can't wait for the chance to kill him. And also a literal dead body possessed by a devil. The hero's noble goal? To touch some boobs. Though manga readers may scoff at some adaptation choices and the removal of a scene from the manga, the show so far is off to a great start, with brisk pacing that matches the manic tone of the story and its irreverent humor.

"If you don't take job seriously, you'll die." Mappa & Shueisha has revealed a third official trailer for an anime series titled Chainsaw Man, premiering in October in Japan and streaming on Crunchyroll in the US sometime later in 2022. This seems like the kind of anime that would come from the mind of Sam Raimi or straight out of the Evil Dead universe, but it's far from that. Following a betrayal, a young man named Denji left for the dead is reborn as a powerful devil-human hybrid after merging with his pet devil and is soon enlisted into an organization dedicated to hunting "devils". It's adapted from the manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Denji eventually joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters, a government agency focused on fighting against devils whenever they become a threat to the world. Featuring the voices of Kikunosuke Toya as Denji, Tomori Kusunoki as Makima, Shogo Sakata as Aki Hayakawa,...
