A couple of weeks ago, I posted an entry announcing a new film festival showcasing strictly horror films directed by women, and within that post I asked if there were any black female directors of horror amongst our readers, and, sure enough, I received some replies – 2 specifically; from Hanelle M. Culpepper and Tiffany Jackson.
Both alerted me to films they’ve made within the genre, and I’m sharing them with you all here.
First, Hanelle - her first feature, Within, won Outstanding Feature Film at the Big Bear Horror Film Festival and the Tabloid Witch Award for Best Horror Film, Best Child Actress and Best Supporting Actor. And those of you who have cable TV, you can catch Hanelle’s film on the Lifetime Network tomorrow night, July 31st, at 9Pm. It’ll air again on August 15th at 9pm, and several times in October. A DVD release is planned for September 15th.

We admit that at times we've labeled a few genre films as being more suited to Lifetime than our readership when they veered off into soap opera-ish territory so we're more than a little curious about the network's "broad departure" (in its words) from its typical fare to present supernatural thriller Within this Saturday night, July 31st.
Synopsis:
Rachel Weiss (Mia Ford) can see evil spirits within others. She is a sweet girl with a troubled soul caused by this unique gift. After witnessing the brutal killing of her mother, Rachel and her father (Sam Jaeger) look for a fresh start by moving to a small town. Rachel quickly warms to her new schoolteacher, Abby Miller (Lori Heuring), and becomes ‘best friends’ with classmate Michelle Lowe (Sammi Hanratty).
When Michelle’s penchant for schoolyard pranks turns from good-natured fun to potentially deadly, Rachel suspects that her friend may be less than friendly.

Next to zombie flicks, ghost stories are probably second on the list of the stuff we love to cover here on a daily basis. For years movies that go bump in the night have supplied horror fans with lots of reasons to be scared of the dark, and this latest flick, Within, seems to be right on track in terms of delivering the shivers.
