NEW YORK -- The man who wants to build a center-left radio network aimed at countering conservative talk shows said his objective is to build a successful business rather than further an ideological goal. Mark Walsh, CEO of Progress Media, said Monday that he expects to close deals for "four or five of our seven overall targets" by mid-January even though some radio industry analysts and observers viewed his plans with skepticism. "The deal market has been very quiet for a while, especially when it comes to stations in big markets," Barrington Research Associates analyst James Goss said. "And I am not aware of any groups in trouble that have signaled they would sell." Walsh is eyeing stations in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston and Los Angeles and has hired a string of executives to make the network "informative and entertaining," but not a "didactic liberal voice" because "that's not entertaining." They include Lizz Winstead, who created Comedy Central's "The Daily Show", and former CNN producer Shelley Lewis to run entertainment and news programming, respectively.
