- In February of 1980, while exiting the famous chess club known as "The Flea House," he was assaulted by five street thugs. He was 77 at the time but was able to fight off some of the attackers, but there were just too many of them and he was severely beaten. He was taken to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.
- Was a dedicated chess player and used to frequent "The Flea House" in New York City, which is also where his recruitment scene in "The Killing" was filmed.
- Was a professional wrestler and wrestling promoter.
