- Shut out the Brooklyn Dodgers to clinch the 1956 World Series for the New York Yankees. Struck out Jackie Robinson end the game; it would be Robinson's final major league at-bat. Also a member of the Yankees' 1958 World Series champion team.
- Part of the notorious May 1957 Copacabana nightclub incident in which he, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Hank Bauer, and Whitey Ford got into a scuffle with members of a bowling team. Bauer was accused of hitting one of the bowlers, but was cleared. The players were fined, and the Yankees traded Martin to Kansas City.
