- An outspoken liberal, Knebel advocated the legislation of marijuana. He was also a member of the 'Hemlock Society', espousing the right to commit suicide - which he did by taking on overdose of sleeping tablets in February 1993.

- Graduated from the Miami University of Ohio. His first paying job was as a journalist for 'The Daily Record' in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Subsequently worked for other publications in Chattanooga, Toledo and Cleveland. In 1950 joined Cowles Communications. The following year, he began writing a widely read syndicated satirical column, entitled 'Potomac Fever', lampooning politics and government.
