- From 1998 to 2008 the play-by-play announcer for Vancouver Canuck games on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific; from 2005 to 2008 also worked as the play-by-play announcer for CBC's Hockey Night in Canada program, covering the second game of their Saturday night doubleheaders.
- Called Toronto Blue Jays games on TSN in the early 90's. Famous for calling the game which clinched the Jays 1993 American League East pennant. He returned as play-by-play announcer for the Jays on CBC for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
- Since 2008, Jim has been the lead play-by-play announcer for Hockey Night in Canada. In addition to the regular Saturday game, he also calls the NHL all-star game, the Winter Classic, and the Stanley Cup Finals.
