LONDON -- Channel 5 is making a rare foray into big-budget original drama production with Hear the Silence, a major program about the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine controversy starring Juliet Stevenson. The move signals a new direction for the British terrestrial network, which has until now focused its original drama budget on its teen soap Family Affairs. With a total annual budget of about £150 million ($245.5 million), Channel 5 -- now styled Five -- has preferred to adopt an acquisitions model for the bulk of its primetime drama output, which includes major movies as well as such crime series as CSI: Miami and The Shield. But drama head Corinne Hollingworth said the project could be the first of many, reflecting new investment from Five shareholder RTL. Other drama projects, including a homegrown police show, are also in the pipeline.
