The age-old struggle between original source material and creative interpretation rears its head again with Netflix’s “Cowboy Bebop”, a new take on the acclaimed Japanese anime originally released in 1998. Costume designer Jane Holland used the original series’ design aesthetic as a springboard for her work in the live-action reboot, which is already the subject of fan scrutiny for not precisely replicating the animated version.
Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) served as a lightning rod for debate for costume as well as casting. Eschewing the short-shorts and crop top of the anime in favor of less revealing fashion was Holland’s “2021 way into that character as opposed to a 1998 version,” she explains. She finds the new look equally as sassy and sexy without the original’s extreme level of gratuitousness.
There were logistical considerations, too, that come into play for a live-action series, such as the practicality of stunt work during...

“The Wheel of Time” costume designer Isis Mussenden grew up in Hollywood, although not inside the industry itself. “Insecure” costume designer Shiona Turini started her career in editorial at brands like Cosmopolitan and Teen Vogue before becoming a top stylist. “The Great” Season 2 costumer Sharon Long had her first on-set experience happen on “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lever,” while “Cowboy Bebop” costume designer Jane Holland scored her big break on the set of Jane Campion’s “The Piano.” “Foundation” costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh studied fashion in her home country of Ireland before landing her first major gig as the costume assistant on “The Secret of Roan Inish.”
The paths these five women took to become top costume designers in the industry are all different, but their skills as artisans and appreciation for the importance of the work of their peers is in lockstep. That unity shines...

Spike Spiegel is such an iconic character that there are literally articles devoted to “Cowboy Bebop” fans recreating his look as cosplay. So when it came time to craft the live-action version of the 1990s anime series, costume designer Jane Holland knew she needed to put extra thought into what she calls the “signature costume.”
“It’s such a cool character, obviously,” Holland tells Gold Derby during our “Meet the Experts” costume designers panel. “So a signature costume has to do a lot of work.”
As played by John Cho in the new Netflix series “Cowboy Bebop,” Spike is an intergalactic bounty hunter known for his cool temperament and excellent fighting skills. As a result, Holland needed to make sure Spike’s suit would work whether he was stationary or in the midst of a wild brawl — while also paying heed to the original anime iteration of the costume.

Whether you're a super fan or just curious, Lady Gaga's newest album, Artpop, is currently streaming on iTunes Radio. It's got ballads (did you see her "Dope" cry sesh on the YouTube Music Awards?), bangers ("G.U.Y.," "Mary Jane Holland," "Fashion!"), and all the types of weirdness we've come to expect from Gaga ("You’re just a pig inside a human body / Squealer, squealer, squeal out, you’re so disgusting!"). Enjoy.

Have we met Lady Gaga’s new alter ego —move over Jo Calderone—or is Momma Monster just declaring her love of weed in the new snippet for “Mary Jane Holland,” a track from Nov. 11’s "ArtPop." In the 2-minute preview, Lady Gaga singing in an exaggerated mannered tone, extols the virtue of Mary Jane, hanging in Amsterdam, and generally looks at the fame game. It’s a driving, throbbing track that includes call-outs and psychedelic turns. In other words, it’s more like a bad acid trip than a mellow high. “I know at the moment they think I’m a mess/but its alright because...

After much anticipation, the big reveal has finally been made. Gaga’s ‘Artpop’ cover was unveiled on Monday via her Twitter along with a quote from her song, Applause: ‘One second I’m a Koons, then suddenly the Koons is me!’ ‘Koons’ referring to Jeff Koons, designer of the cover.
As probably expected, the cover is eye catching, artistic and generally just kooky. Although not her greatest cover, Gaga is definitely trying to make a statement with this and the whole album in general. At the iTunes festival back in the beginning of September, Gaga boldly stated how she “wanted to set [her]self free of this box they put you in, in pop music.” If this cover isn’t stepping outside of the box, I don’t know what is.
On the cover is a sculpture of the pop sensation herself, along with distorted images of Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’ as a background,...
