- Sumi Haru was born on August 25, 1939 in Orange, New Jersey, USA. She was an actress, known for Krakatoa: East of Java (1968), Hill Street Blues (1981) and Marcus Welby, M.D. (1969). She died on October 16, 2014 in Los Angeles, California, USA.

- She joined the Screen Actors Guild in 1968, and joined the guild's board in the mid-1970s. Among the groups she co-founded was SAG's Ethnic Employment Opportunities Committee. She helped negotiate SAG's contractual clause that called for a more realistic representation of minorities.
- Between 1995 and 2001 she was the first Asian-Pacific American to hold the position of national vice president of the AFL-CIO. In 2009, the Screen Actors Guild honored her with the Ralph Morgan Award.
- She hosted and produced shows at KTLA-TV Channel 5, and worked in the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs department.
- She changed her name on the advice of an acting coach.
