Beijing, July 4 (Ians) China’s table tennis rising star Wang Chuqin became the new world No. 1 in the men’s singles category, as the International Table Tennis Federation (Ittf) released its latest world rankings on Tuesday.
Wang’s compatriot Fan Zhendong had been top for 142 consecutive weeks. With the Ittf world ranking points from Singapore Smash 2022 expiring, 23-year-old Wang claimed top spot from Fan, reports Xinhua.
“This achievement marks a historic moment in Wang’s remarkable journey, highlighting his exceptional talent and unwavering pursuit of greatness,” read an article on the Ittf website.
The duo formed a leading Chinese trio along with veteran Ma Long in the men’s world rankings. Lin Gaoyuan, newly-crowned champion at the World Table Tennis (Wtt) Contender Zagreb, rose to sixth, ahead of fellow Chinese paddler Liang Jingkun in seventh.

Durban, South Africa, May 27 (Ians) Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha retained their mixed doubles title, while China has confirmed the men’s singles title at the Ittf World Table Tennis Championships (Wttc) Finals following Friday’s action.
In a repeat of the tournament’s mixed doubles final in Houston two years ago, the top-ranked Chinese pair overwhelmed world No. 2 Tomokazu Harimoto and Hina Hayata of Japan 11-6, 11-2, 11-7, reports Xinhua.
“We had encountered some challenges in previous matches here, but today we encouraged each other on the court to win,” commented Sun.
It will be an all-Chinese affair in deciding the men’s singles winner after four paddlers swept semifinal berths in the event.
Liang Jingkun scored an emphatic 4-2 victory over fourth seed Harimoto. After two players shared the spoils in the first four games, Liang won 11-9 in both of the following two to advance.

Meanwhile, five other Chinese paddlers secured their berths in the men’s and women’s singles quarterfinals at the Ittf World Table Tennis Championships (Wttc) Finals on Thursday.

Panjim (Goa), March 3 (Ians) Indian table tennis players Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee crashed out in the round of 16 of the womens singles event of the Wtt Star Contender Goa 2023, bringing an end to country’s campaign at the meet, here on Friday.
Sutirtha and Manika, the two surviving home country hopefuls, met with superior opponents on the day. Sutirtha came up well-short against the experience and guile of Portuguese Fu Yu (wr #19) in her last 16 match.
The veteran with the pen-hold grip pulled off a 3-0 win to move to the quarters. This was the second time Sutirtha has lost to Fu.
On the other hand, Manika was up against Qian Tanyi (wr #20) of China and went down 1-3. The Indian did put up a fight even winning a close third game, but the Chinese was clearly in control of the match from the outset.

Chengdu (China), Oct 1 (Ians) The Indian men’s table tennis team started its Ittf World Team Championships Finals 2022 campaign with a 3-0 win over Uzbekistan 3-0 in its first Group 2 tie, here on Saturday.
World No. 37 Sathiyan Gnanasekaran set the ball rolling for India by beating Kholikov Elmurod 3-0.
National Games champion Harmeet Desai then registered another 3-0 win over Anorboev Abdulaziz and Manav Thakkar sealed the victory after downing Iskandarov Shokhrukh 3-0.
After the victory, the Indian men’s table tennis team sits second in Group 2 with two points and will next play second-seeded Germany on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the women’s team gave a tough fight but ultimately went down 2-3 to fifth seeds Germany in its first Group 5 match.
