The son of a concert tenor, he was best known for his interpretations of the "comic baritone" roles in Gilbert and Sullivan opera's, in particular, Ko Ko in "The Mikado" and Jack Point in "The Yeomen of the Guard". Member of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company from 1922 to 1939 and again from 1947 to 1951.
