A review for a movie not on video disc. CineSavant bears down hard on a now-obscure UK thriller that proves a crossroads for several key themes of modern terror: Nazis, bacteriological warfare and paranoid conspiracies. ‘007’– associated writer Jack Whittingham scripted a tale that connects old-school espionage to visionary super-crimes against humanity, the thriller genre of ‘The Unthinkable.’ Who’s the threat? An innocuous little doctor with a horrendous secret background and a somewhat preposterous ability to go undetected as he kills to assume and protect a new identity. The techno-chiller was released in 1948 yet seems screamingly relevant now.

It’s Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing together in a horror picture, a formula no shock feature fan can resist. Most of us remember staring at the beautiful full-color photo of Chris Lee in monster makeup in Denis Gifford’s picture book about horror movies. Yet this has remained one of the pair’s most obscure items, at least as a quality presentation. Powerhouse Indicator’s expert added value items put all the rumors to rest, including the question that’s been repeated through the years — where’s the legendary 3-D version? Or perhaps more to the point, was there really a 3-D version? And then there’s the other question — is the movie any good?

The 1970’s were the end of an era for the beloved Hammer Studios, to the chagrin of a legion of fans the world over. Gothic castles and the supernatural in horror films were slowly giving way to more realistic horrors with the introduction of films like Psycho, Blood and Black Lace, and Rosemary’s Baby.
The Vampire Lovers came near the end of the line for Hammer Studios, yet the film was a success, proving that the old formula still had some strength in the ever-changing culture. Somewhat hampered by a hopelessly old fashioned script, the film manages to stay current with its lesbian overtones, that even today would be titillating in certain circles.
Ingrid Pitt stars as the age old temptress Carmilla Karnstein, whom along with her family, the Karnsteins, have torn a path of destruction through Europe murdering wealthy families for generations. Over the course of Carmilla’s hunt,...
