Hulu will not be going back to Mars — at least not with Sean Penn.
The streamer has canceled Penn’s space-exploration drama “The First” after one season. The high-profile project was Penn’s first-ever starring role on a TV series, but it was met with lackluster reviews.
The series followed the first human mission to Mars in the not-too-distant future. The character drama focused on the astronauts who embark on the mission but also their families, loved ones and the people participating back on Earth. It explored the challenges that go into interplanetary colonization.

The first look at “The First” is here. Hulu dropped a teaser Tuesday for its new series, which finds Sean Penn going where no man (except Matt Damon) has gone before: Mars.
Penn plays Tom Hagerty, an astronaut on the first human mission to the fourth planet in the drama that’s set in the near future. The moody teaser is jam-packed with stunning visuals, accompanied with a contemplative voiceover by Penn musing on the vast unknown.
“I always think of [Carl] Sagan‘s words: Every human being who ever was lived out their lives on a mound of dust suspended in a sunbeam,” he says.

A former Fort Worth, Texas, police officer who was sentenced to life in prison after being accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in 1994 was exonerated on Friday, according to several reports.
Brian Franklin was exonerated after spending 21 years in prison. He was released in May when the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted him a new trial, which ended after less than two hours on Friday with a “not guilty” verdict, according to Fox 4.

It’s a problem lately with lots of Hollywood movies… and some not-Hollywood movies, too. It’s been interesting watching Matthew McConaughey make project decisions after winning his Academy Award. He has gone big with epics like Interstellar and gone small with the still unreleased Sea of Trees, but this week he’s trying something new. Basically, he’s attempting to bring back the Civil War film with Free State of Jones. This type of movie is rarely done right and usually is super dry, so it’s a tall order, but starring one of our most exciting actors right now, there’s a chance, right? Well, this turns out to be a total bore, plodding and sometimes strangely tone deaf to the racial dynamics on display. The saving grace is McConaughey though, even if you can’t quite see what he saw in this material. There’s moments of entertainment and righteous indignation, but too often it’s just a poorly thought out history lesson.

The first American voice that is heard in Amigo, John Sayles's ponderous cine-play set during the U.S. occupation of the Philippines at the turn of the 19th century, rips through the air with the brutal dissonance of an artillery shell. The torqued South Carolina accent of actor Brian Lee Franklin -- cursing out the country's "little monkeys" -- announces the arrival of an American squadron in the tiny Philippine "baryo" where they and Amigo remain for the next two hours. Along with an introductory crack about "hearts and minds" made by squad Lieutenant Compton (Garret Dillahunt), that private's twanging epithet puts the audience on Code Orange allegory alert.
