- In the fall of 1978, in his 9th grade year at Brown JHS, he Produced, Wrote and Directed his first amateur play, "Behind the Scenes". It was about a group of JHS students trying to put on a play after the budget was slashed and the fall play was cut. The school's African American Janitor helped Joey set up 500 chairs. Four people attended: Bonnie Behun (his mother), Michael "Red" Penick (his Godfather), Mary Evans (his Grandmother) and the Janitor. At the end of the play, Joey received a standing ovation, and the school's janitor approached the stage and handed him a check to cover next year's play. Stunned, Joey could only muster up this: "Thanks, Gary".
