- Shopan Entesari
If ever a fate was sealed by a name, it was that of Shopan, who was christened accordingly thanks to a doctor's prediction that Mrs. Entesari's happily, humming baby would grow up to be a musician "like Chopin".
Throughout a multi-faceted career as a saxophonist/composer/music supervisor/producer and an executive with the likes of Fox Broadcasting's Fox Sports, Warner/Chappell Music Publishing, NBC Universal, Catapult Productions and Headfirst/MCA Records, Shopan gained a working knowledge of every facet of the Film, TV & Music industries. The wide-ranging experience distinguished him as a uniquely equipped music supervisor, whose clients include HBO and New Line Cinema.
Shopan's career had early origins in his hometown of Chicago as part of the pop group United Nations, which segued from the prom and church circuit to become the opening act for Tina Turner, 3 Dog Night, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Deep Purple and Grand Funk Railroad. The teen band also toured the Midwest with the Pop group, Chicago and played club dates throughout its members' college years.
After earning Bachelor's degrees in both music performance and business administration from Northeastern Illinois University, which he attended on a music scholarship, Shopan headed to Los Angeles to make his mark. Intent on learning about the record and publishing side of the business, he landed a job with Larry Shayne Enterprises. Shayne, an old-time music publisher, who had discovered Henry Mancini, needed someone who could find young writers and talent, produce demo recordings and promote them to record companies. Shopan was his man.
All the while, Shopan "kept his sax chops alive" by sitting in on jam sessions at local clubs, and he broadened his knowledge by taking a class in record production at Grove Music School taught by noted jazz saxophonist Dave Pell, who took him under his wing. When Pell and his partner Bill Traut, were funded by MCA to launch Headfirst Records, Shopan was invited to join them. As A&R Director and Promotional Manager, he gained invaluable experience and increased his knowledge of the record industry, from scouting the talent to working with them on material, recording and producing the sessions.
He partnered with another gifted composer/producer Stephen Boyd to launch Mediascore to began writing and producing jingles for regional and national commercials for numerous high-profile clients over a four-year period, including Miller's Outpost, Standard Shoes, Iberia Airlines, Levi's, New World Entertainment, Columbia Pictures, Lucky's Supermarkets and Isuzu. To enhance the visual footage for the TV spots, they produced music ranging in style from classical to contemporary pop dance styles and branched out to compose for industrial and independent films.
Recruited by Warner/Chappell Music Publishing, which had a catalog with over a million copyrights - music from Gershwin to Rod Stewart to Madonna to Prince- Shopan rose to Director of Film & TV music during his four-year stint there. He provided creative supervision and music licensing rights for a wide range of projects including "Bird On A Wire", "China Beach", "Beverly Hills 90210", "Baywatch", "Look Who's Taking Too" and licensed songs for national advertising campaigns for American Express, Levi's, McDonald's, BMW, Proctor & Gamble, etc...
He was approached by Fox Broadcasting Corporation to serve as music consultant and establish a department for Fox Sports. A six-month gig stretched to four-and-a-half years after being promoted to VP Music. During this period he supervised all aspects of the music needs, clearance and license negotiation of FBC and Fox Sports-produced shows as well as creating an extensive music library.
Shopan's most recent venture is ProVideoProduction.TV, a company he started with Gary McLaughlin, a very talented Videographer/Editor/Producer. Offering full video production services, including Aerial Copter Videography, has attracted a number of major clients and the beauty pageant producer for Mrs. America and Mrs. World.
Currently, he is in production on a new cable music TV show entitled "Inside The Art of Music" that he created.
