Yesterday, your Vf Daily blogger attended the 80th birthday gala of Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-ny). The party, which many politicos thought presumptuous given Rangel’s current ethical violation investigation, was held at the Plaza Hotel, located on 5th Avenue. “It’s usually held at Tavern on the Green, but you know, that closed,” Robert Levin, author of Bill Clinton: The Inside Story, told us. Levin and hundreds of other guests seemed undeterred by the change in venue. Suited, jowly gentleman and delightfully dressed women munched on crab cakes, chicken, and triangular mushroom dumplings as they mingled about the hotel’s third-floor ballroom. There were also onion rings—oh, were there onion rings!—the highly caloric smell of which could be detected from even the designated press area, a tiny, roped-off pen in the back of the ballroom soon vacated by most of the journalists present.
