Dekker spent his formative years in Kingston. From a young age he regularly attended the local church with his grandmother and aunt. This early religious upbringing, as well as Dekker's enjoyment of singing hymns, led to a lifelong religious commitment.
In 1961 he auditioned for Coxsone Dodd (Studio One) and Duke Reid (Treasure Isle), though neither audition was successful.
In 1969 Dekker took permanent residency in the UK.
In 1984 he was declared bankrupt.
Dekker was the first Jamaican artist to have a hit record in the US with Jamaican-style music.
I was born in St. Andrew's and raised in Kingston then I attended the Alpha Boy's school.
So, after school, I needed to learn a trade and started to work as a tailor.
Recently, I've been working on a new album of material, which should be out in the new Millennium. I'm not sure which song will be put out as a single, but I'm still hoping to get another record in the charts.
Things will get better if you just hold out long enough.
I like to write songs about what's happening, what I see around me and what I hear.
