Taught for 15 years at the Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut.
His first Broadway success came in 1912 with the musical comedy "Sari".
Served in France during World War I with the entertainment division of the Y.M.C.A. His play "Out of Luck", written for the Yale University Drama Association, was based on his wartime experiences.
