The girl runs up a debt with her pusher and she is coerced into pushing for him in a notorious local pub. On her fist job she is arrested by the police, but released without charge. Meanwhile her father decides to take matters into his own hands. Walter helps to decipher the girl's diary, which leads them to the pusher's address. Her father confronts him and in an ensuing struggle, stabs him. He is arrested and when the pusher dies in hospital, David fights for him in magistrates court, arguing that there is no grounds for a murder charge. The magistrate does not agree, but David is confident that he will get it down to manslaughter and keep the prison sentence to 3 years.
