Director, editor, and cinematographer Joaquim Castro was born in São Paulo and has been working in audiovisual since 2003. He recently edited the feature film "Sérgio Mamberti" by Evaldo Mocarzel and both edited and directed, alongside César Charlone, the film "Partido," both slated for release in 2023. In 2022, he edited the final episode of the fiction series "Pico da Neblina" for HBO, produced by Fernando Meirelles. In May, he produced and created the videos for the exhibition "100 Years Modern" at MIS São Paulo, curated by Marcello Dantas and José Miguel Wisnik. His first feature film as a director and editor was "Dominguinhos" in 2014, for which he was nominated for Best Editing and won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro in 2015. The film was screened in major cities across Brazil and featured in important festivals worldwide such as IDFA, DOKLeipzig, DocLisboa, BAFICI, É Tudo Verdade, and SXSW, among others. This year, he completed his second feature film as director and editor titled "Teatro Oficina - Maquina do Desejo," which won the Best Editing Award and honorable mention from the jury at É Tudo Verdade Festival 2021, Best Documentary by the Audience Jury at Mix Brasil Festival 2021, Best Documentary at FICSUR 2021 in Chile, Best Artistic Contribution at Vitória Film Festival 2021, Special Jury Prize at the 12th International Border Film Festival 2021, received a special mention for excellence in all awarded categories at the 7th Arquivo em Cartaz 2021, and the Country's Memory Award at the 25th Brazilian Film Festival (NY, LA, and Miami). He edited and sound designed the film "Democracia em Vertigem" by Petra Costa, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary in 2020, and won the Best Documentary award at the seventh edition of the Platino Awards, among others, available on Netflix. Also for Netflix in 2021, he was one of the editors of the series "João de Deus, Healing and Crime." He collaborated on the editing of Marina Thomé's film "Alzira E - What I Never Lost," featured at festivals such as BAFICI in Argentina, Krakow Film Festival, and In-Edit Brasil, where it won the jury award for Best Documentary. In 2020, he edited the film "Medina" about the two-time Surfing World Champion, available on Globoplay, and collaborated on the editing of Bárbara Paz's film "Babenco Someone Has to Hear the Heart and Say Stop," winner of the Venice Film Festival's Best Documentary award, among many others. In 2018, he also directed four episodes of the series "Expresso Brasil" with Hilton Lacerda, available on Canal Curta. In 2017, he edited the film "The Piano That Talks" by Marcelo Machado, winner of the In-Edit Brasil award for Best Documentary in the Popular Jury category. He edited "Women of the Earth" with overall direction by Katia Lund about Brazil's traditional midwives, and the film "Sergio Britto, Master of the Stage" by Vince Tigre about the actor and his formative journey in Brazilian theater history. In 2015, he edited, wrote the script for, and did sound for the feature film "Until Next Sunday," directed by Evaldo Mocarzel; and was the camera operator for the film "Campo de Jogo" directed by Eryk Rocha. He was a camera operator for the feature film directed by Marcio Debelian. "The Wind Outside" is a portrait film of the poet Fernando Pessoa based on poem readings created by Professor Cleonice Berardinelli and singer Maria Bethânia. He also edited and did sound design for the feature "Naked Eye" directed by Joel Pizzini, about the life and work of Ney Matogrosso, winner of the Best Editing award at the 19th Cuiabá Film and Video Festival and also won the Audience Award for Best Film at the In-Edit Brasil 2014 Festival. He edited and did sound for the film "Jards" by Eryk Rocha, which won the Best Director award at the Rio Festival in 2012. He edited and sound designed three films by Sergio Bernardes, the medium-length film "Amazonia," the short film "Atlantic Forest," and the feature film "Tamboro - For All Without Exception," which won the Best Editing and Special Jury Prize at the Rio Festival and the Best Film Audience Vote at the Cine Fest Brasil Buenos Aires. With director Paula Gaitán, he collaborated on the editing of the feature film "Exiles of the Volcano," Best Film and Best Editing at the 46th Brasília Festival, and edited the film "Agreste," 2010, presented at the 29th São Paulo Biennial, São Paulo International Show, and out of competition at the Rio Festival 2010. He also edited the award-winning "Terras" 2009 by Maya Da Rin, which participated in 35 festivals worldwide with highlights including official selections at Leipzig, Locarno, and won the Las Câmaras de La Diversidad award in Guadalajara.
