In 1949 was authorized by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write the
biography of Sherlock Holmes's creator.
Alternated between homes in Mamaroneck, NY, and England from 1948 to
the early 1960s, when he settled in Greenville, South Carolina, where
he died.
He met his wife Clarice on an ocean voyage.
One of the greatest Golden Age detective novelists and famous as an
innovator in mystery fiction, he is best known for his locked-room
murders and similar "miracle crimes."
