The Reverend R. L. Brown was one of the leading African-American residents of Jacksonville, Florida; besides serving as a Baptist minister, the Reverend was also a carpenter turned house builder and an architect, as well as an educator and local politician, having served two terms in the Florida House of Representatives (1881-85). A school named for him still stands in Jacksonville.
