Groundbreaking ceremonies for professional sports teams are usually bastions of hoopla, with owners and executives sporting hardhats and shovels for throngs of cameras.
But these are unusual times, and the San Francisco Giants opted to skip all the hullabaloo.
The Major League Baseball team, without fanfare or even press release, broke ground on the first phase of their $2.5 billion Mission Rock project across the inlet called McCovey Cove from Oracle Park in the Mission Bay area of “The City.”
They will save the spectacle for another time, a team spokesperson told Sportico.
While Mlb has remained idle because of the Coronavirus, the Giants have been working on the mixed-use development project with the City of San Francisco and Port of San Francisco. The process was born in 2005, five years after the ballpark opened. Since then it has navigated a maze of public referendums, approval processes and financing models.

As we’ve been reporting, Syfy had its Upfront presentation to potential advertisers Wednesday night, and they spent yesterday issuing press releases. It’s a good thing they held the event at a pier, as there is a boatload of information included in the summary press release below. We made sure to get it posted before the weekend, since it will take you the entire weekend to absorb it all.
Some of it is information we’ve already posted, like the Ringworld and Childhood’s End development and the High Moon pilot production, some of it we posted about fairly recently, like Ronald D. Moore‘s Helix, some of it we haven’t heard about in quite some time, like Orion, Proof, and Dominion, and some, like the nonscripted shows, the anthology, and some of the projects announced, are news to us.
You’ll also see ratings info and other...

Pro wrestler Chris Jericho has been tapped in to host ABC's upcoming extreme game show "Downfall."
Jericho is well known to wrestling fans, having been in the ring since the 1990s and winning the WWE World Championship six times.
ABC's latest reality contest premieres June 22.
On the six-episode series, contestants try to answer questions while on the roof of a Los Angeles high-rise. Meanwhile, "the largest conveyor belt ever seen on TV" will send potential winnings (cash and prizes), the player's personal possessions and even friends and family over the side of the building.
Jericho, repped by Apa and manager Barry Bloom, will ask players questions and tempt them with various options throughout the game.
He also made his big-screen debut this summer in "MacGruber."
ABC had the most recent breakout summer reality series two years ago with "Wipeout" and is looking to the FremantleMedia North America-produced "Downfall" to boost this summer.
