Known as the "Zoo Lady" since being appointed director of the
Zoological Garden of San Diego in July 1927, the only woman zoo
director in the world for some decades to follow, she wrote a book
about her experiences as "housekeeper, chief dietitian and consulting
physician as well as homemaker," 'My Life in a Man-Made Jungle' (1940).
She was considered an innovator in working with and understanding
