Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
My hunch about the higher production values for The Amityville Terror (2016) wound up being true, and whether it’s the slightly more polished look or a cast of professional actors, the sixteenth film in the “franchise” is easily the best in quite some time.
That’s grading on a scale since there are still some pretty glaring issues in the film, but, overall, director Michael Angelo has delivered a solidly entertaining Dtv film with soft callbacks to other franchise entries.
After a cold open that’s revealed to be a bracketing storyline, Amanda Barton’s screenplay quickly establishes a familiar foundation: a troubled family moves into a suspiciously cheap house on Amity Lane and the bad energy eventually manifests in murderous behavior.

Action/fantasy horror can be very hit or miss. I have to say in general I quite enjoy it as a sub genre. Movies like the Underworld, Resident Evil and Blade franchises or Dracula Untold, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and The Last Witch Hunter are all pretty entertaining films. Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t ‘great’ movies but when kept at about ninety minutes, they’re an enjoyable and fun watch. So despite its awful title, this is what I expected from Angels Fallen.
It is clearly influenced by the movies mentioned above but does not have anywhere near the budget. A budget that it very much needs to pull off its ideas.

The infamous Odenbrook Sanitarium closed after a mass suicide occurred within its walls. Sixty years later, six college students armed with cameras and recording equipment venture into the asylum to prove the existence of the paranormal. Thrills turn into nightmares as members of the group go missing without a sound, cell phones mysteriously vanish, corridors turn into mazes, walls appear where doors once stood, flashlights fail and something or someone begins toying with the group.

The Jacobsen family moves into an aged house in the town of Amityville. Almost immediately they witness strange occurrences and begin seeing terrifying images around the house. The local townspeople also have a secret and soon the Jacobsens are battling with an evil spirit in the house and the malicious locals who want them silenced…
After a stunning opening coda, The Amityville Terror soon decends into the same direct-to-market cash in we’ve come to expect from the Amityville series. At least this one doesn’t hang around too much: within twenty minutes we see our first haunting – a gory bath death that isn’t (much like other haunted house movies,...
