He'd intended a career in art or music but it was only by accident of a summer job as a singing waiter that he got into acting. He was seen by Elia Kazan and John Garfield, of the New York City's Group Theatre, who promptly offered him a scholarship at their school. After graduation he did some dozen or so plays before moving to Hollywood.
