A group of bandits stage a brazen train hold-up, only to find a determined posse hot on their heels.

An old soldier on the frontier, the father of a dozen children, a staunch patriot himself, brings these children up with rigid military training. He conducts his household as a garrison with strict discipline, drills, etc. On the evening of the day the picture opens, the oldest boy wishes to go out to make a call on his sweetheart, but the old soldier commands the boy to stay at home. This command the boy is loath to obey, but his father, himself brought up under rigid military rule, rails at his insubordination of the boy, and threatens that if the boy goes out he goes for good. The boy does go, however, and returning finds sure enough the door barred against him. Sad and homeless he wanders, but it is fortunate he goes for the next morning he views from a distance a tribe of Indians starting out on the warpath. With this lead, he with valiant effort, secures the aid of a troop of patrolling soldiers, who rescue the boy's family and sweetheart just in time. The military training imbued by the old soldier stood in good, as it was the means of holding the Indians at bay until help arrived.

The emigrants are seen fighting the hordes of redskins. The hero rides to the settlement for help and engages in a thrilling duel with pursuing Indians. The settlers swoop down on the unprotected Indian village and burn it up. The savages seeing the flames, hurry back and fall into an ambush. They are attacked from the rear by the emigrants and from the front by the settlers. In a wild scene of carnage the surprised Indians are mowed down by the hail of bullets, horses and riders falling in tangled masses.

Two-Gun Hicks, a particularly deadly type of gun fighter, with an absolute disregard of human life, arrives a stranger at Moose Gulch, where he calmly shoots Bad Ike, the bully, who has tried to make him drink with him. Hicks is not interested in the dance hall girls, but when he sees the "decent" woman, the wife of the town drunkard, he determines to secure her, she repulses him. Hicks, unable to understand her loyalty to her husband, finally concludes that she must love the drunkard, and this belief alone prevents him from killing Jenks. Hayes, a gambler, also desirous of securing Jenks' wife, incites the drunkard against Hicks believing the latter will kill him. Jenks, crazed by drink, gives Hicks until five o'clock the following afternoon to get out of town, threatening to shoot him if he is not gone by that time. Hicks, seeing his chance to win the woman, decides to kill Jenks. That night Mrs. Jenks visits him and exacts a promise from him to spare her husband. He gives in to her because the only true love he has ever known is for her. The next afternoon at five o'clock Jenks and the villagers wait for Hicks to either crawl or fight, but despite the temptation, the two-gun man leaves the town quietly, and Jenks is congratulated as a hero. In the Jenks cabin the grateful woman offers up a prayer for the two-gun man as he slowly rides over the hills He has passed out of the life of Moose Gulch forever.

Pastor Holt of Arizona has a daughter, Ellen, and a son, John. John is inclined to be a trifle restless under the home discipline. The pastor gives John a sum of money to deposit in a bank at Grey Rock. This money is for the erection of a new mission. Ellen meanwhile has sold her horse, Jim, to complete the sum necessary for the erection of same. Bill Evers, a gambling house keeper, is in reality the "Desert Scourge," an outlaw. He buys the horse of Ellen from a trader, and while robbing the stage the horse breaks its tether and returns to the parsonage. John Holt arrives at Grey Rock and loses both the money and his watch at the gambling hall. The watch contains a picture of his sister, and Bill Evers is greatly smitten with the girl's appearance. He meets through an inquiry in the newspaper, stating that the horse has returned, Ellen Hold, and falls in love with her. She reciprocates his affection. John is sent to the bank where he says he deposited the money. While en route he attempts to rob the stage to recover the church money he lost in gambling. He is wounded and the horse carries him home. Bill Evers, who is engaged to marry Ellen, is calling at the house. The posse follows the boy by a trail of blood and Bill Evers makes the great sacrifice of taking the boy's place and announcing his identity. He is removed by the posse but escapes, and the story ends in the reunion of Ellen and Evers.

A reward of $500 is offered for the capture of Broncho Billy, a desperate outlaw. One day, while hiding near the home of a rancher, Broncho sees a little girl burying her broken doll. Before she completes the ceremony, her mother comes out and takes her into the house. That evening after she has been put to bed, the little girl steals out to finish burying her doll. She falls over a ledge, and Broncho, who is sleeping nearby, is awakened. He picks her up unconscious. Upon taking her home the mother offers him a cot to sleep on. While Broncho sleeps the rancher comes home and recognizes him. He is intent upon getting the $500 reward, but his wife protects the rescuer of her child and Broncho is allowed to escape.

Ice Harding, leader of a band of outlaws, covets the pinto leader of a band of wild horses, and after a long chase, ropes and breaks him. Ice and "The King" become fast friends and when the rest of the gang object to the King because his peculiar markings betray their presence, Ice breaks with the gang, determined to play a lone hand rather than give up his horse. But he searches for the girl he loves and finds her a siren on the Barbary Coast instead of the girl he thought she was, and broken hearted, he returns to the mountains. It is the King who ultimately carries him to happiness.

Cattleman Flint cuts off farmer Sims' water supply. When Sims' son Ted goes for water, one of Flint's men kills him. Cheyenne is sent to finish off Sims, but finding the family at the newly dug grave, he changes sides.

Bored with the ranch, Buck's girl goes off to the city and gets involved in a brothel. When Buck brings a herd of cattle to town, a streetwalker lures him to the house just in time for him to save his girl from Martin.

Two wagon caravans converge at what is now Kansas City, and combine for the westward push to Oregon. On their quest the pilgrims will experience desert heat, mountain snow, hunger, and Indian attacks. To complicate matters further, a love triangle develops, as pretty Molly must chose between Sam, a brute, and Will, the dashing captain of the other caravan. Can Will overcome the skeleton in his closet and win Molly's heart?

In the 1840s, Mexico has ceded California to the United States, making life nearly impossible for the Mexican population due to the influx of land and gold-crazy Americans. Farmer Joaquin Murrieta avenges his wife's death against the four Americans who killed her and is branded an outlaw. The reward for his capture is increased as he subsequently kills the men who brutally murder his brother. Joining with bandit Three-Fingered Jack, Murrieta raises an army of disaffected Mexicans and goes on a rampage against the Americans, finally forcing his erstwhile friend Bill Warren to lead a posse against him.

Jefferson Russett runs a logging company; his brother, Steve, is the prodigal son. Jeff cuts off his allowance and puts him to work, but on his first day, he is tricked into signing a contract allowing arch-rivals Barton Logging to use Russett railways. Jeff hauls Steve up to the logging camp, but he steals a plane. It runs out of gas in Barton territory, where spitfire Jo is running the camp. Naturally, this shrew must be tamed, so Steve, calling himself Steve Martin, sets out to do just that as he's trapped in the camp for two months until the next boat anyhow.
