- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsMargarita TerekhovaFilipp YankovskiyIgnat DaniltsevA dying man in his forties remembers his past. His childhood, his mother, the war, personal moments and things that tell of the recent history of all the Russian nation.“ In my own reflection I awoke, ashes and dust. As if mother was there, under the porch of the living room waiting for me to run pass her, the glass of milk, bites of bread and the steam of the raging kettle fleeing from the cold room. Luring in the background is our deathbed. Firewood cracking along the traces of the flame, scattered pieces of letters, memories, dreams, all together : a mirage of past visages. I remember a burning house in the snow, a fragmented motion of moving saturated images now turnt plain white. In its all devouring howl of the winter’s breeze, after long years and infinite afeard particles escaping this haunted wooden frame, once alluded to be the entirety of my childhood, I now find but traces of bitter warmth, where the pain caused by the scorching heat is indistinguishable from the nostalgia of the ingle of my childhood home. Somewhere between then and now, this motionless moment and the tick after, a tomorrow of endless projections and the solace of an everlasting sleep, I seek something that has passed and lingers, something that had dwelled and fled in what is to come. The seeming and promising contingency of every motion is to be found in one of those cached motionless moments, in fact, fragments of now and then. He who has lured in the fibers of the wooden furnitures and frames was never awaiting my end, the notion like that is but what seems to be the mechanics of his reaping blade, a faulty fiction. I existed only in my continuity ,and projected that continuity to an extent, where further than that is but a meadow of white and glassy crystal, an ether of brokenness, a void eventually, is the banal reality of the timespan I called “Life”. Now when I gaze upon that porch, far beyond, I see a house yonder stretching its border, then no more.”
- DirectorMichel GondryStarsJim CarreyKate WinsletTom WilkinsonWhen their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.“They certainly loved each other, or at least what they imagined love to be. And should they ever forget each other, their wounds will forgive their daggers and their cloaks, they shall love again with their forgetful minds. Should their paths never cross again, at least undeniably their love may flourish in another’s distant memories, spotless, blameless, careless and blissful.”
- DirectorSofia CoppolaStarsBill MurrayScarlett JohanssonGiovanni RibisiA faded movie star and a neglected young woman form an unlikely bond after crossing paths in Tokyo.“I longed for a walk to escape from my imprisonment in my hotel room. I walked the strange pass ways, then the foreign streets, alienated by the neon lights in the shapes of calligraphic hieroglyphs. It was all in a language I don’t know, and for my incapability of even the simplest pronunciation or communication, I was lost, not just in translation and transitions, but foremost in solitude and then lost my own image too… Soon I met you somewhere between two Suntory on rock and a packet of cigarettes. In a gleaming moment, not dividably pronounceable,we found comfort not in each other’s solitude but solely each other’s being…We fell asleep on that. And woke up. Outside our bed, your room,I found my luggages packed, my passport in my hand, and my unbearable facade that is a synecdoche to my unwillingness to return to my homeland, all in front of the front desk on my way checking out. I was on my way home to my foreign land after I no longer knew what is mine.”
- DirectorCharlie KaufmanStarsPhilip Seymour HoffmanSamantha MortonMichelle WilliamsA theatre director struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he creates a life-size replica of New York City inside a warehouse as part of his new play.“ I played a little part called myself, He played a little part called himself. We were there for a moment. We built our house, we married our wives and husbands, we kissed for a while, we fucked for a while, we dreamt our dreams for a while. I drove past our old house one day, it was all burnt down. I drove past my parents house ten miles away, someone else lived there. I drove past the church, my parents took me to. Then I stopped driving for it was late, I walked up the stairs and wondered where my wife was. I looked for her to tell her about an idea I had and a great big house I had seen on my way home. I couldn’t find her, I couldn’t find my daughter, maybe they went out, maybe it was her birthday. I did buy a pink toy just in case. I sat down and watched some TV, drank something, ate something, slept, watched something. After god knows how long, the TV broke, I stared at its black screen, a fat fat man, once in his youth, full of potentials, dreams and everything, now out of shape, with something to drink in his hand, barely capable of holding the can of something or anything. He died some times after . We all do.”
