- DirectorPeter HaydenWhat would happen if the world were suddenly without people - if humans vanished off the face of the earth? How would nature react - and how swiftly? On the edge of Europe, the deserted village of Chernobyl reveals the surprising answer after an unplanned experiment. Chernobyl was abandoned by people after the worst nuclear disaster in history (April 26, 1986). A level 7 meltdown resulted in a severe release of radioactivity following a massive explosion that destroyed the reactor. More than 20 years later, Chernobyl has been taken over by a remarkable collection of wildlife and descendents of pets that were left in the city when its residents fled the nuclear fallout. Unexpectedly in the aftermath of this disaster, Chernobyl has become a sanctuary for plants, birds, and animals, including some species thought to be on the brink of extinction. The adventures of a likeable cast of non-human characters give viewers a rare glimpse into a world where wild animals face challenges in an environment totally outside their experience, and once-domesticated pets have learned how to fend for themselves.

Tens of thousands of lives were ruined. Today, nature has begun reclaiming the area of the exclusion zone surrounding the old power plant. But the consequences and the suffering are still felt today. Chernobyl is a lesson for the present. It warns us about the risks of our ever-evolving modern society. But Chernobyl taught us more importantly about the cost of lies. By highlighting the flaws in the Soviet Union system, it revealed how they can lead to disaster, and how the way we tell information about what really happened can cause harm. The past cannot be undone, but we can learn from it. The show is a deep dive into one of the worst disasters in human history - A disaster that revealed the true devastating nature of nuclear energy in the wrong hands...is about the tragedy of Chernobyl and the damages it left behind after a deadly fight against an invisible enemy.

- DirectorGary NullValerie Van CleveStarsRyan AlexanderChristopher BusbyHelen CaldicottThe nuclear reactor catastrophes at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and now at Fukushima, Japan, remind us that a heinous specter hovers over the health and security of millions of people worldwide. Not only does the threat of nuclear weapons proliferation remain but every nuclear station sits as a ticking bomb awaiting meltdown and terrorist attack. Many Russian studies conclude that the Chernobyl disaster has been responsible for the deaths of approximately a million people since the 1986 meltdown. And the cost of the Daiichi Fukushima crisis may be higher. From the mining of radioactive materials to their transportation, from reactor fusion to the storage of radioactive waste, the energy cartel is contaminating natural habitats, rivers and aquifers while endangering millions of lives.
- DirectorRollan SergienkoVladimir SinelnikovThe film focuses very much on the human side of Chernobyl. It was made between May 28 and June 26, 1986, and some parts were added in September 1986. Many of those featured in the film participated first-hand in the events. The emotional nature of the film is evident throughout and it evokes pathos with the simple actions of uniformed peasants returning to their contaminated farms or the arguments between officials at the plant. Others were fishing ina contaminated lake, and informed the interviewer that their fathers and grandfathers had fished here, so they were going to do the same. The film reveals the horrors of the accident in bringing into reality the science fiction of the past. It had a mixed recepton at the West Berlin film festival in early March 1987 as a result of the relatively poor quality of the filming, though the radiation spots on the film itself to some only adds to the drama. Talking with scientists and historians about the event, Jiménez and his collaborators makes a return of the days and weeks after the explosion, explaining all the consequences for the inhabitants close to the region of Chernobyl and the complete abandon of a city, Pripyat, turned unwittingly in the horrible and isolated legacy of the Atomic Age, a city uninhabitable for the human life along the next 25,000 years.

- DirectorNicky LarkinThe city of Pripyat was once considered the finest place to live in the whole of the Soviet Union. A thoroughly modern city, it was built in 1970 to house the workers of the new Chernobyl nuclear power plant and their families, and was once a happy home to 50,000 people. In the aftermath of the accident in April 1986, the residents were instructed to pack one suitcase and told they would be returning in three days. One thousand buses were drafted in from all across the Soviet Union to take the residents of Pripyat out of their now highly contaminated home. They never returned. 21 years later Pripyat stands empty, a ghost town deep within the exclusion zone, the last remaining Soviet city. This haunting film by Irish artist Nicky Larkin takes you inside Pripyat to examine the relationship between time, nature and culture, in a city that will never be lived in again.
