- DirectorSofia CoppolaStarsCailee SpaenyJacob ElordiAri CohenWhen teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. This might be my favorite of the year, though it's tough to rank what movies I liked more than others. I mean, this movie was romantic with some real dark undertones that made the movie difficult to watch, but also weirdly hypnotizing. The movie is gorgeous to look at and listen to, and it's more slice of life than true narrative, but I really liked that as it moved through Priscilla's life.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsAdam DriverShailene WoodleyGiuseppe FestineseSet in the summer of 1957, with Enzo Ferrari's auto empire in crisis, the ex-racer turned entrepreneur pushes himself and his drivers to the edge as they launch into the Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy.Honestly, the more I think about this movie, the more I love it. This is more about Ferrari the man than Ferrari the car, but I liked that and thought it was interesting. The movie has great performances, as well as some great editing throughout. The final 30 minutes are riveting, and the movie just gives a lot of thematic material to chew on.
- DirectorSean DurkinStarsZac EfronJeremy Allen WhiteHarris DickinsonThe true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s.Now this movie was great. Efron is incredible here in this heartbreaking, tragic true story. This is a difficult watch, but it's definitely worth it.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsPaul GiamattiDa'Vine Joy RandolphDominic SessaA curmudgeonly instructor at a New England school remains on campus during Christmas break. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War.The Holdovers was amazing - heartwarming, dramatic, emotional, slightly romantic, it has everything I want in a coming of age movie, complete with a tear-inducing ending.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsJake GyllenhaalDar SalimSean SagarDuring the war in Afghanistan, a local interpreter risks his own life to carry an injured sergeant across miles of grueling terrain. This movie was amazing. Great acting, great action, great drama. Not to mention the great direction and editing at play. This movie just had at all; it's a white-knuckle military action film but it's also just a great story that's worth watching.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsJason StathamAubrey PlazaCary ElwesSpecial agent Orson Fortune and his team of operatives recruit one of Hollywood's biggest movie stars to help them on an undercover mission when the sale of a deadly new weapons technology threatens to disrupt the world order.Just a whole lot of fun! I loved this movie so much. It has great action, but more than that it has phenomenal editing that elevates this from a typical spy action comedy. This movie just fires on all cylinders and doesn't let up on the fun factor; it moves at breakneck pace, and Statham and Hugh Grant are great here. I just really, really enjoyed myself with this one, and on pure entertainment value it's one of my favorites of the year.
- DirectorJoaquim Dos SantosKemp PowersJustin K. ThompsonStarsShameik MooreHailee SteinfeldBrian Tyree HenryMiles Morales catapults across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero. What else can be said about this movie? This is an animated masterpiece - it's just not a good Spider-Man movie, it's a good movie, period. With incredible, gorgeous visuals and a euphoric soundtrack that fits perfectly with what's going on on screen, this movie is a sight for the ears and eyes, with a great story to boot.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsJoaquin PhoenixPatti LuPoneAmy RyanFollowing the sudden death of his mother, a mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home.Beau Is Afraid is INCREDIBLE. I really thought this movie was amazing, with so many interesting themes and beautiful sequences. Yes, this is a weird movie that is definitely not audience friendly, but it all fits within the context of the movie and it's all incredible to watch unfold with Pheonix at the helm. This movie has some of the best scenes and sequences of any movie I've seen this year, and this is one I am actively looking forward to rewatching.
- DirectorKristoffer BorgliStarsLily BirdNicolas CageJulianne NicholsonAn ordinary family man finds his life turned upside down when strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams.Dream Scenario was amazing. I knew it was getting good reviews, but I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. This is a really creative movie that is a whole lot of fun to watch, going in a lot of interesting directions. Nic Cage is amazing here, and overall I loved this.
- DirectorEmerald FennellStarsBarry KeoghanJacob ElordiRosamund PikeA student at Oxford University finds himself drawn into the world of a charming and aristocratic classmate, who invites him to his eccentric family's sprawling estate for a summer never to be forgotten.Saltburn wasn't the most origional movie (at least with the ultimate ending and where the story progressed) but it was still an incredible time at the theatre. Crisp visuals, great sound, and phenomenal acting all makes for a movie that drew me in more than I thought it would. And while I would've preferred something slightly more original, this is still an excellent movie for 95% of its running time, making it one of my favorites of the year.
