- DirectorBernard RoseStarsVirginia MadsenXander BerkeleyTony ToddThe Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.[Horror] - Candyman is a fantastic and beautifully crafted film about a terrifying entity. Tony Todd's Candyman is a beautiful villain who could make the straightest of men erect. The score, by the uber-talented Philip Glass makes the film better than it ever should have been.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartGrace KellyWendell CoreyA wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.[Horror/Comedy/Mystery] - Oh, Alfred Hitchcock. Your sense of humor gets me every time. Rear Window's impeccable murder mystery is amazingly shot through the eyes of a man with broken legs, unable to leave his rear window.
- DirectorJoel AndersonStarsRosie TraynorDavid PledgerMartin SharpeStrange things start happening after a girl is found drowned in a lake.[Horror] - Lake Mungo is a depressing look at a family who loses their daughter. There isn't much for me to say without spoiling it, so I won't say much. Just please watch it.
- DirectorBarry SonnenfeldStarsAnjelica HustonRaul JuliaChristopher LloydThe Addams Family try to rescue their beloved Uncle Fester from his gold-digging new love, a black widow named Debbie.[Comedy] - Not every movie I adore has to be a deep movie. Addams Family Values is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The pitch-black comedy is absolutely fun. The Thanksgiving play scene is a tradition at our house at thanksgiving.
- DirectorJacques AudiardStarsJohn C. ReillyJoaquin PhoenixJake GyllenhaalEli and Charlie Sisters, an infamous duo of gunslinging assassins, chase a gold prospector and his unexpected ally in 1850s Oregon.[Western] - The Sisters Brothers is a western with very few shootouts. The big fight you wait all movie to happen never does. Instead, we see a beautiful bond between two brothers who want nothing more than to hit it big and protect each other.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsMichael CeraMary Elizabeth WinsteadKieran CulkinIn a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.[Comedy/Action/Romance] - Scott Pilgrim's live action adaptation is the best comic book adaptation of all time. Fight me. The chemistry between Michael Cera and Marie Elizabeth Winstead is impeccable. The two play Scott and Ramona so amazingly. The fight scenes are some of the best choreographed fights I've seen.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.[Romance] - Before Sunrise is an awesome romance movie. The chemistry the two leads have is so great, you'd swear they were dating in real life. It's just a tender film that makes me feel so good to watch.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.[Action/Horror] - And in a completely opposite movie, Oldboy is one of the most brutal movies I have ever seen. It's about Oh Dae-su, a drunken oaf who's kidnapped and held hostage for 15 years. He loses all his weight, and sets out to kill those who held him hostage.
- DirectorBen CoccioStarsCal RobertsonAndre KeuckSerataren AdragnaTwo troubled adolescents chronicle the events that ultimately lead up to a terrifying assault on their school.[Drama] - Zero Day is very much about Columbine. It chilled me to my core. It's about two teenagers who are talking with each other about a vile plan to end the lives of their classmates. It's easily one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen.
- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsLee Byung-hunChoi Min-sikJeon Gook-hwanA secret agent exacts revenge on a serial killer through a series of captures and releases.[Horror] - I Saw the Devil showcases even further that South Korea is better than us. The film is about a government agent's wife being murdered. The agent finds the murderer and beats the shit out of him. When he's done, he lets the murderer free to recuperate, only to beat him again. The movie's dark and sleazy atmosphere helps the movie become one of the best horror movies ever.
- DirectorRyûhei KitamuraKoji HashimotoShûsuke KanekoStarsMasahiro MatsuokaRei KikukawaDon FryeGodzilla's fiftieth Anniversary project, in which Godzilla travels around the world to fight his old foes and his allies plus a new, mysterious monster named Monster X.[Monster] - As a celebration of Godzilla's 50th birthday, Toho released Final Wars, an awesome movie where Godzilla must fight against his former friends and worst enemies. Everyone is here! It's like Smash Ultimate before Smash Ultimate. The best fights are Godzilla VS. Anguirus, King Caesar, and Mothra, Godzilla VS. Zilla, and Godzilla VS. Gigan. I hope my 50th birthday is this good.
- DirectorKazuki ÔmoriKoji HashimotoKenjirô OhmoriStarsKunihiko MitamuraYoshiko TanakaMasanobu TakashimaDesolate by the loss of his daughter, a geneticist creates a monstrous new mutation.[Monster] - The best Godzilla movie that isn't Final Wars is Godzilla vs. Biollante, a movie where Godzilla must fight a gigantic plant creature known as Biollante. Biollante is the best female antagonist in film, fight me.
- DirectorLars von TrierStarsWillem DafoeCharlotte GainsbourgStorm Acheche SahlstrømA grieving couple retreat to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.[Horror/Art] - Antichrist is a deeply disturbed horror that is provocative in everything it does. The movie is about a grieving couple who loses their child while they passionately made love. They try to spend the month in a cabin to escape reality, but the wife starts to lose her mind.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsCatriona MacCollDavid WarbeckCinzia MonrealeA young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural "accidents", she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.[Horror] - The Beyond rocks hard. It's about a woman who buys a hotel, that just so happens to sit above one of the 7 gates of hell. What follows is some of the goriest scenes ever put to film.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsWilliam PetersenKim GreistJoan AllenFormer FBI profiler Will Graham returns to service to pursue a deranged serial killer dubbed "the Tooth Fairy" by the media.[Horror/Mystery] - The first time Dr. Hannibal Lecter appeared on screen was also one of the most amazing. It's an atypical slasher film, where officer Will Graham searches for the Red Dragon killer Francis Dolarhyde in a fantastic game of cat and mouse.
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsAomi MuyockKarl GlusmanKlara KristinMurphy is an American living in Paris who enters a highly sexually and emotionally charged relationship with Electra. Unaware of the effect it will have on their relationship, they invite their pretty neighbor into their bed.[Erotic/Romance] - Love is a film I watched for the cover, and stayed for the emotionally raw story. A tale about a couple that tries to spice up their love by having a threesome that falls into obsession is one of the best tales ever put to film. It made me sad, and that was something I genuinely didn't expect.
- DirectorFranck KhalfounStarsElijah WoodNora ArnezederAmerica OlivoAs he helps a young artist with her upcoming exhibition, the owner of a mannequin shop's deadly, suppressed desires come to the surface.[Horror] - Horror gets the remake treatment a lot, something you'll see a lot of. The brutality of Maniac's remake is unmatched: the scalping scene is one of the most brutal things in horror. The performance Elijah Wood gives as the troubled Frank Zito is a definite career highlight in a career full of them.
- DirectorDario ArgentoStarsJessica HarperStefania CasiniFlavio BucciAn American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders.[Horror] - The cinematography in Suspiria ascends it beyond anything I expected it to be. Suspiria is fantastic, and I heard the remake is equally good. I haven't seen it yet, but if it is, expect it on this list.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.[Horror] - A classic horror! Nightmare on Elm Street saved horror, and clawed its way into my heart. Robert Englund was fantastic as Freddy, and Heather Langenkamp was amazing as Nancy. Everyone was great!
- DirectorTony RandelStarsDoug BradleyAshley LaurenceClare HigginsKirsty is brought to an institution after the horrible events of Hellraiser (1987), where the occult-obsessive head doctor resurrects Julia and unleashes the Cenobites and their demonic underworld.[Horror] - Hellbound is a sequel to Hellraiser. The sequel takes a lot of the best parts of the original and improves upon it in its own twisted fashion. Frank Cotton's Reincarnation is one of the best bits of gore in film history!
- DirectorRoxanne BenjaminMatt Bettinelli-OlpinDavid BrucknerStarsChad VillellaMatt Bettinelli-OlpinKristina PesicFive interlocking tales of terror follow the fates of a group of weary travellers who confront their worst nightmares - and darkest secrets - over one long night on a desolate stretch of desert highway.[Horror/Anthology] - Southbound is an anthology that weaves 5 very unique and very well made tales. The 3rd tale, "The Accident", is easily the best of the bunch.
- DirectorRuggero DeodatoStarsRobert KermanFrancesca CiardiPerry PirkanenDuring a rescue mission into the Amazon rainforest, a professor stumbles across lost film shot by a missing documentary crew.[Exploitation] - Cannibal Holocaust was the first found footage film. The abhorrent violence and innovative film style helped make the movie better than it ever deserved to be.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsGeorge ClooneyJohn TurturroTim Blake NelsonIn the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.[Comedy/Epic] - A fantastic retelling of the Odyssey, O Brother, Where Art Thou? introduces us to Ulysses Everrett McGill, one of the best roles of George Clooney's career. The soundtrack is fantastic, as is the cinematography.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincorFive friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.[Horror] - Evil Dead is very, very different from the unstoppable locomotive of Evil Dead 2. Evil Dead is certainly more horrifying, but what's absolutely surprising is just how unforgivingly gory it is. It's a truly enjoyable watch.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieAs Hollywood's Golden Age is winding down during the summer of 1969, television actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth endeavor to achieve lasting success in Hollywood while meeting several colorful characters along the way.[Comedy/Revisionist History] - Sharon Tate's death is one of the most disturbing murders of that era. So Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's choice of showcasing her life and then killing the murderers instead of her is one of the most powerful decisions in 2019's films. Beyond that, Leonardo Dicaprio and Brad Pitt are absolutely stellar in this movie. The movie is probably my favorite movie of the year.
