Movies I watched in Quarantine Ranked
Movies I watched (and rewatched), while I was quarantined because of COVID-19, ranked and rated. [Started: March 13, 2020 ~ Ended: January 5, 2022]
I will also be adding my brief thoughts to some because I think it’s unfair to just give a number score without at least giving some context as to why. Unfortunately most will probably be left blank if I can’t give adequate thoughts, since It’s been a while from when I watched them or I just don’t know how to describe them (and laziness). Though many will also be left blank if I plan to review them in the future, like films from franchises a notable directors.

- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.9.5/10
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.9.5/10 - A movie about humanity as a whole. Indescribable, simply an experience like no other.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLiam NeesonRalph FiennesBen KingsleyIn German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.9.3/10 - The brillIant story of Oskar Schindler, massive in scale, yet personal. Told in gorgeous black and white, in over 3 hours that never feel dull. This is a near perfect movie, there isn’t really anything I can criticize. The only thing that stops this movie from having a higher score is because I believe it could’ve examined a bit more of the war through its point of view, and I also think it could’ve gone further showcasing the horror of wars because it does feel a bit “hollywoodized.”
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.9.2/10
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroRay LiottaJoe PesciThe story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito.9.3/10 - The fascinating real life story of Henry Hill, showcasing one of the best Mobster films of all time, and master director Martin Scorsese’s best film. The way it showcases how this character learns throughout his life, and what it leads him to become is extremely engaging, especially with Scorsese’s amazing direction and style. The only thing that stops this from being one of the best of all time is that I feel like the movie felt a bit distant emotionally. It shows his entire life, but there weren’t enough moments to really dwell on the characters, in the way I felt The Godfather did. I think If it could’ve focused a little more on the characters it would be a true masterpiece, but as a whole this is a brilliant film, with a powerful, poignant ending.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartGrace KellyWendell CoreyA wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.9/10 - The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, crafts a voyeuristic treat, that is one of his finest films. Having one of the most intense third acts in any film ever, this movie doesn’t simply give you the thrills, but also crafts a surprising romance in the background, and each character is given their own arcs from afar. My only issue with this movie is how contrived the initial plot is, being how Jeff is able to clearly and conveniently look at nearly all of his neighbors. However, it’s entirely forgivable given the amazing movie we got from it.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKirk DouglasRalph MeekerAdolphe MenjouAfter a failed attack on a German position, a general orders three soldiers, chosen at random, court-martialed for cowardice and their commanding officer must defend them.9/10
- DirectorThomas VinterbergStarsMads MikkelsenThomas Bo LarsenAnnika WedderkoppA teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.9/10
- DirectorTony KayeStarsEdward NortonEdward FurlongBeverly D'AngeloLiving a life marked by violence, neo-Nazi Derek finally goes to prison after killing two black youths. Upon his release, Derek vows to change; he hopes to prevent his brother, Danny, who idolizes Derek, from following in his footsteps.9/10 - Incredibly powerful film with striking visuals, a masterful performance by Edward Norton, and a message important today two decades later. It’s insane how Edward Norton made the reform of a white supremacist skinhead in an under 2 hour film believable. I like how the movie shows you how he became this way as well, not only through the big events, but small things that can alter your perspective. There’s so many great elements to this film, like a broken family, a big brother trying to stop their sibling from going down the wrong pass, living with your past mistakes. It’s all very well excerpted, though the execution isn’t perfect. I do think that there could’ve been a little more time to Derek’s change because while it’s believable, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel a bit rushed, or idealistic. The structure of the film is a bit messy, but it ends up working extremely well for the most part. I like how it doesn’t directly tell you what to believe, there some small ambiguity, but this is a movie about hate, how it leads to more hate, and why it’s pointless baggage.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.9/10
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsJohn David WashingtonRobert PattinsonElizabeth DebickiArmed with only the word "Tenet," and fighting for the survival of the entire world, CIA operative, The Protagonist, journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a global mission that unfolds beyond real time.First Watch: 8.5/10 - Rewatch: 9/10
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJohn CusackCameron DiazCatherine KeenerA puppeteer discovers a portal that leads literally into the head of movie star John Malkovich.9/10
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsNicolas CageMeryl StreepChris CooperA lovelorn screenwriter becomes desperate as he tries and fails to adapt 'The Orchid Thief' by Susan Orlean for the screen.9/10
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsMichael FassbenderCarey MulliganJames Badge DaleA sex addict's carefully cultivated private life falls apart after his sister arrives for an indefinite stay.9/10 - My current new favorite movie I’ve watched during quarantine. The most realistic depiction of addiction.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMartin SheenMarlon BrandoRobert DuvallA U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.8.7/10 (Theatrical Cut) - An incredible movie that takes a deep dive into the war and dissects several aspects of War in an effective, engrossing, beautiful, and thought provoking way. It’s still an amazing feat by Francis Ford Coppola coming off of 2 of the greatest films of all time. My only big issue with this movie is that some parts of the movie are literally entirely pointless to the plot of the movie overall. I get that it’s trying to show an aspect of the war, but it could’ve been better integrated into the film. I probably need to watch the other cuts and even this version again to appreciate it more.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.8.7/10 - gotta rewatch...
- 19641h 35mPG8.4 (519K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.8.7/10
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleMichael CaineKen WatanabeAfter witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city.8.7/10
- DirectorSam MendesStarsKevin SpaceyAnnette BeningThora BirchA sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.8.7/10
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsEmilio EchevarríaGael García BernalGoya ToledoAn amateur dog fighter, a supermodel, and a derelict assassin, all separately struggling to find love, find their lives transformed by a devastating car wreck in Mexico City.8.7/10 - Potentially the best directorial debut I’ve ever seen.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.8.5/10
- DirectorMichael MannStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroVal KilmerA group of high-end professional thieves start to feel the heat from the LAPD when they unknowingly leave a verbal clue at their latest heist.8.7/10
- DirectorSpike LeeStarsDanny AielloOssie DavisRuby DeeOn the hottest day of the year on a street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, everyone's hate and bigotry smolders and builds until it explodes into violence.8.5/10 - Truly heart wrenching that this movie this movie is still relevant 3 decades later, maybe even more so.
- DirectorFernando MeirellesKátia LundStarsAlexandre RodriguesLeandro FirminoMatheus NachtergaeleIn the slums of Rio, two kids' paths diverge as one struggles to become a photographer and the other a kingpin.8.5/10 - An unrelenting, quickly paced, dive into the City of God’s shocking true story. With some great world building, a huge cast of very well acted and interesting characters, it makes you truly feel immersed in the city. This movie honestly feels like it could’ve been a TV show, but the amazing editing shows us so much in so little time. However, I did think the movie started to get a little repetitive at the end, and some parts felt rushed, or even pointless in the grand scheme of things, when other characters or areas could’ve been better developed.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsEllen BurstynJared LetoJennifer ConnellyThe drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..8.3/10 - Drugs are bad?! Very simply message, but told in an incredibly creative and engaging way. I think a few moments really do go over the top, but despite focusing on 4 different characters they’re all extremely well developed and despite its shallow message, subtly show what caused them to get into the drugs in the first place, and how they all devolved with them.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJerry LewisDiahnne AbbottA passionate yet unsuccessful comedian stalks and kidnaps his idol to take the spotlight for himself.8.5/10
- DirectorMichel GondryStarsJim CarreyKate WinsletTom WilkinsonWhen their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.8.5/10
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartKim NovakBarbara Bel GeddesA former San Francisco police detective juggles wrestling with his personal demons and becoming obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful woman he has been hired to trail, who may be deeply disturbed.8.5/10
- DirectorMilos FormanStarsJack NicholsonLouise FletcherMichael BerrymanIn the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse.8.5/10
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsSharlto CopleyDavid JamesJason CopeViolence ensues after an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth finds a kindred spirit in a government agent exposed to their biotechnology.8.3/10 - Incredibly impressive and creative directorial debut by Neill Blomkamp. I love the documentary style, though it’s a little inconsistent, it grounds the movie and makes it feel so real. There’s some excellent world building, this feels realistic to how we would react to aliens. The visuals are fantastic, though some of the CGI looks wonky at times, but as a whole it’s a fantastic experience. I wish I could praise more of this film, but it does have problems. The entire plot is largely contrived, and there are too many convenient moments. The storyline, while mostly unpredictable, ends up being quite simple. All the side characters are extremely cliched. Only the main human and alien characters are any good. Sharlto Copley does a really great job in his first movie acting role. I love how real Wikus feels. He’s a flawed individual, makes mistakes, is selfish, but tries to be good. Overall it’s just a really impressive and captivating film, I just wish there was more in the story and characters as the world and potential ends up being more interesting than the film itself.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsWilliam H. MacyFrances McDormandSteve BuscemiMinnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard's inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Marge Gunderson.8.5/10
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartDonna ReedLionel BarrymoreAn angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.8.5/10 - Possibly the best Christmas movie I’ve watched. It’s just a very well made film that holds up all these years later with wonderful acting from James Stewart, and an amazing third act that really brings everything together nicely. There probably isn’t much I can say that hasn’t already been say. My only small issues are that some parts are a bit too unrealistic, I definitely feel like the middle section of the movie was a bit too long, and the predictable ending could’ve been handled better, but this is just me looking for stuff to justify not giving it an even higher score. It’s a wonderful life indeed.
- DirectorPete DocterKemp PowersStarsJamie FoxxTina FeyGraham NortonJoe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.8.5/10
- DirectorRoberto BenigniStarsRoberto BenigniNicoletta BraschiGiorgio CantariniWhen an open-minded Jewish waiter and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp.8.5/10
- DirectorDan GilroyStarsJake GyllenhaalRene RussoBill PaxtonWhen Louis Bloom, a con man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.8.5/10
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsKevin SpaceyGabriel ByrneChazz PalminteriThe sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup.8.3/10
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsJesse EisenbergAndrew GarfieldJustin TimberlakeAs Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.8.5/10 - Fincher, Eisenberg and Sorkin greatly deliver when it comes to the directing, acting and dialogue respectively. This is an fantastic and fascinating examination of Zuckerberg and (The) Social Network, even if it isn’t fully accurate. It’s one of those movies that have stuck with me and I’ve come to appreciate the more I think about it. However, I think it’s brought down by some shallow and cliche side characters, which I believe could’ve been better developed. While very well shot, I would’ve preferred if the color palette wasn’t so muted, though it does fit for the film. Probably need to rewatch to appreciate it more.

This movie should be great, but unfortunately, the way the plot is set up is a massive plot hole. I also think the ending of the movie went on for too long, even though it was unexpected and very well handled.
