Supernatural Season 1
Ratings of Supernatural season 1 episodes
A really solid start to the show! It suffers a bit for me by not having a concrete plot, but in its place we get a ton of character focused one off episodes that build something more important than the show's mythology - the dynamic between Sam and Dean.
That being said, when the show's mythology is built upon, it's really dope. Episode 11 "Scarecrow" is fantastic at thrusting the season's overall story forward, while Episode 14 "Nightmares" forwards the entire show's overall story forward.
The Season 1 finale is awesome, it's a really fun episode that again, thrusts the story forward for the season. Unfortunately, it doesn't really wrap anything up and feels more like a mid-season finale than a season finale.
Still, Season 1 is absolutely a fundamental season and lays the groundwork for everything that comes after. It's full of awesome one off episodes and a ton of great moments between Sam and Dean.
So even if as an overall season it may fail to fully and cohesively deliver a compelling story arc, it still manages to be a really fun season.
8/10 - It's great!

- DirectorDavid NutterStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesSarah ShahiSam and Dean Winchester were trained by their father to hunt the creatures of the supernatural. Now, their father has mysteriously disappeared while hunting the demon that killed their mother, 22 years ago.A really great pilot that sets up not only the tone for the show, but the stakes and story so well.
8.7/10. - DirectorDavid NutterStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesCallum Keith RennieSam and Dean make a stop at Blackwater Ridge and end up helping a young woman and her brother find their other brother, who mysteriously disappeared, while on a camping trip, in the woods. After the great pilot, "Wendigo" is sadly a mediocre episode that I don't feel like ever goes anywhere. I find some of it enjoyable, but overall - it's fine.
6.4/10. - DirectorKim MannersStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesAmy AckerSomething in the lake of a small town is killing innocent people."Dead in the Water" is a fun, if not mundane, episode of the show. It has a fun ghost hunt, some great character stuff and a really solid climax.
7.6/10. - DirectorRobert SingerStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesJaime Ray NewmanA friend of John's calls Sam and Dean for help about a strange recording on the black box of a crashed plane. They soon realize that the demon which caused the crash is picking off the crash's only seven survivors. The first demon episode of Supernatural is utterly awesome. The episode is almost like Final Destination and the climax on the plane at the end is terrific.
8.4/10. - DirectorPeter EllisStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesAdrianne PalickiA game of Bloody Mary unleashes a ghost who lives in mirrors and kills by gouging out the eyes of her prey, Sam and Dean must find a way to stop her before she claims another victim."Bloody Mary" is probably the scariest episode of Season 1 for me. A terrifically done horror movie of the week with some nice plot stuff in there, surprisingly.
8.4/10. - DirectorRobert Duncan McNeillStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesAmy GrabowA serial killer shape-shifter adopts the likeness of Sam's college buddy to commit a gruesome murder. When the brothers investigate, the being "borrows" Dean's form to continue the killing spree. This episode is awesome. The introduction of shapeshifters is dope, the open-endedness of Dean being a murderer is awesome, too.
8.7/10. - DirectorDavid JacksonStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesDan ButlerSam and Dean investigate an age-old urban legend known only as the Hook-Man, the spirit of a 19th century pastor with a twisted sense of morals that is unknowingly being used as an innocent girl's attack dog. It's good! I think there's a lot of good stuff here, but it's overall just a solid episode of the show.
7.6/10. - DirectorKim MannersStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesAndrew AirlieSam and Dean head to Oklahoma to investigate a recent spate of insect related deaths around a new housing development. Why?
5/10. - DirectorKen GirottiStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesJeffrey Dean MorganFollowing visionary Sam's recent nightmare about the former Winchester home in Lawrence, Kansas, where the present dwellers, Jenny from Wichita and mother to two small kids, are suspiciously accident-prone, Dean reluctantly accepts to drive there. Dean and Sam reassure Jenny but follow up on the kids fear of a flaming creature in the closet. They consult Missouri Moseley, their father John's old medium friend, and together with the spirit of Mary Winchester, confront an evil poltergeist, but a second ghost intervenes and someone hides behind Missouri."Home" is probably my favorite episode of Season 1. With a ton of great story stuff for the show, and a ton of fun ghost hunting moments, Home is really awesome.
9/10. - DirectorGuy Norman BeeStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesBrooke NevinWhile investigating a haunting in an abandoned asylum and rescuing two teenagers who ventured in, Sam and Dean become trapped with the spirits of those who had died in a riot decades ago, one of which was a doctor who causes extreme rage in his victims. An episode with a lot of good ideas, a lot of good scenes, but a bit of messiness throughout.
7.6/10. - DirectorKim MannersStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesNicki AycoxAfter arguing about the search for their father, Sam and Dean split ways - Sam to continue the search in California, Dean to hunt the mysterious disappearances of passing-through couples in Indiana."Scarecrow" feels like the true start to the main story of Season 1. It's a fun episode as a story of the week, but the introduction of Meg is really awesome.
8.7/10. - DirectorAllan KroekerStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesJulie BenzAfter Dean is fatally injured on a case, Sam thinks he's found a cure in a preacher who performs miracles. However, after they discover that these miracles are not as 'holy' as advertised, the brothers race to stop them before another innocent life is sacrificed.Tied with "Home" for my favorite episode of the season, "Faith" is a terrific introduction to Reapers and a really great character episode for Sam and Dean.
9/10. - DirectorPaul ShapiroStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMegalyn EchikunwokeDean is contacted by an ex-flame who asks him for help when black men in her hometown are being murdered by a driver-less racist truck. Why again?
5/10. - DirectorPhilip SgricciaStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesBrendan FletcherWhen Sam's visions start happening while he's awake, he and Dean investigate the unusual murders he foretold only to find them all to be true. And that perhaps he's not the only one with special abilities. When visiting the Millers the boys go as priests."Nightmare" might not have a lot to do with the plot of Season 1, but it has a lot to do with the plot of the show. By introducing more psychic characters and a tie to Sam and Dean's origins, it's a really solid and exciting episode!
8.7/10. - DirectorPeter EllisStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesJohn Dennis JohnstonAfter following a history of disappearances in Hibbing, Minnesota, Sam finds himself locked in a cage and Dean must team up with a by the book sheriff to find him......before the hunt begins.Continuing Season 1's awesome streak, "The Benders" is a fantastic episode that dives into the fact that humans can be just as scary and sick as monsters.
8.4/10. - DirectorKim MannersStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesNicki AycoxWhile looking into a mysterious murder in Illinois, Sam and Dean come across Meg, an old 'friend' of Sam's, who may be far worse than they ever thought possible and who plans to use the brothers as bait to trap their father, John."Shadows" is another solid plot episode that at times can feel a bit stretched beyond its limits, but I think it ends up really well.
8/10. - DirectorChris LongStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesTravis WesterWhen a case of a seemingly average haunting begins to go haywire, Sam and Dean come to find that two bumbling, wanna-be paranormal investigators, Harry and Ed, are already on the case.Easily the best episode of this stretch of the season. It's funny, exciting and has a lot of great moments with a really creative monster.
8.7/10. - DirectorWhitney RansickStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesJeffrey Dean MorganDean gets a second chance to right a wrong from his past when the brothers get a mysterious tip from their father about a case they'd worked years ago, but left unfinished after Sam was nearly killed by the creature. There's a bit of overexplaining and some parallels are too forced, but the Striga is a nice monster.
7.6/10. - DirectorPhilip SgricciaStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesTaylor ColeWhen two sets of owners of the same painting are brutally murdered, Sam and Dean investigate with the help of an auction house owner's daughter, all while Dean shamelessly tries to pair her with his little brother.Sam getting a somewhat kinda sorta girlfriend is cool. I guess.
7/10. - DirectorTony WharmbyStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesJeffrey Dean MorganAfter John's mentor, a vampire hunter, is murdered, John shows up to help his sons solve the case. The vampires have taken an antique gun with supernatural powers. The Winchesters set out to retrieve the gun.An extremely cathartic episode. After waiting 19 episodes and hearing about Sam and John's beef, finally seeing it is just awesome. Also, the vampires are cool.
8.4/10. - DirectorRobert SingerStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesNicki AycoxMeg turns to killing John's friends in order to get the Colt. Sam and Dean stakeout the Demon's next target; a family with a six month old baby showing signs of special abilities. John heads off alone to confront Meg.A solid penultimate episode! It has a ton of awesome set up that leads into a great cliffhanger to lead into the season 1 finale.
8.4/10. - DirectorKim MannersStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesNicki AycoxSam and Dean seek help from Bobby Singer, an old family friend in their mission to save their father from Meg. The brothers set a trap for Meg.A really solid season finale. Its only issue is that it doesn't wrap up anything. But as an episode itself? It's really great!
