- DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsAnthony MackieDamson IdrisEnzo CilentiIn the near future, a drone pilot sent into a war zone finds himself paired with a top-secret android officer on a mission to stop a nuclear attack.Mixed Bag (C+): The action & Lorne Balfe's score were easily the redeemable parts of the movie, but I would rather watch 6 Underground instead of revisiting this in the near future. I guess it's worthy of being called a January movie...
- DirectorDoug LimanStarsChiwetel EjioforAnne HathawaySonicA couple attempts a high-risk, high-stakes jewelry heist at a department store.Thumbs Down (C): On the Bright Side, Hathaway & Ejiofor give good performances and it's definitely not as bad as Songbird. But sadly, it's surrounded by a dull plotline in the third act and Doug Liman has made far better films.
- DirectorRobert LorenzStarsKatheryn WinnickLiam NeesonTeresa RuizA rancher on the Arizona border becomes the unlikely defender of a young Mexican boy desperately fleeing the cartel assassins who've pursued him into the U.S.Marginal Thumbs Up (B-): While these Liam Neeson action movies do get repetitive in recent years, it's better to just have fun with it. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but I was genuinely entertained.
- DirectorGabriela CowperthwaiteStarsJason SegelIsabella KaiViolet McGrawAfter receiving life-altering news, a couple finds unexpected support from their best friend, who puts his own life on hold and moves into their family home, bringing an impact much greater and more profound than anyone could have imagined. Two Thumbs Up: This was a beautiful, funny & sad movie and definitely worthy of many Oscar nominations!
- DirectorJude WengStarsKea PeahuAlex AionoLindsay WatsonA summer in rural O‘ahu takes an exciting turn for two Brooklyn-raised siblings when a journal pointing to long-lost treasure sets them on an epic adventure with new friends, and leads them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage.Thumbs Up (A-): The Goonies for a modern generation. Kids will definitely enjoy it more, but that doesn't mean the adults can't have fun with it. It's definitely better than most kids movies.
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsDenzel WashingtonRami MalekJared LetoKern County Deputy Sheriff Joe Deacon is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. Two Thumbs Up: You'll either love or hate this movie. I for one loved it for what it was. Even if Se7en is a far superior film, who says you can't like both? It might feel 10 minutes too long, but it's definitely one of the best films of 2021 so far.
- DirectorSam LevinsonStarsJohn David WashingtonZendayaA director and his girlfriend's relationship is tested after they return home from his movie premiere and face each other's turmoil during one long night. Two Thumbs Up (A): Zendaya and John David Washington give Oscar worthy performances in Sam Levinson's best film.
- DirectorMichael FimognariStarsLana CondorNoah CentineoJanel ParrishLara Jean's senior year of high school takes center stage when she returns from a family trip to Korea and considers her college plans--with and without Peter.Thumbs Up (A-): A satisfying conclusion to the trilogy and a better film than the second installment.
- DirectorShaka KingStarsLaKeith StanfieldDaniel KaluuyaJesse PlemonsOffered a plea deal by the FBI, William O'Neal infiltrates the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence on Chairman Fred Hampton. Two Thumbs Up (A+): One of the best films of the year! What more do I have to say?
- DirectorFisher StevensStarsJustin TimberlakeJuno TempleAlisha WainwrightAn ex-convict strikes up a friendship with a boy from a troubled home. Two Thumbs Up: If you enjoy films about second chances, then this film is right up your alley!
- DirectorChloé ZhaoStarsFrances McDormandDavid StrathairnLinda MayA woman in her sixties, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. Two Thumbs Up (A+): Chloe Zhao's best film so far! And another great performance from Frances McDormand!
- DirectorLena KhanStarsMatilda LawlerAlyson HanniganBen SchwartzWhen Flora rescues a squirrel she names Ulysses, she is amazed to discover he possesses unique superhero powers, which take them on an adventure of humorous complications that ultimately change Flora's life and her outlook forever.Thumbs Up (A-): It's no Paddington, but it's still a fun movie the whole family to enjoy.
- DirectorLee Isaac ChungStarsSteven YeunHan YeriAlan KimA Korean American family moves to an Arkansas farm in search of its own American dream. Amidst the challenges of new life in the strange and rugged Ozarks, they discover the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home. Two Thumbs Up (A+): A great look into the struggles of making a new life!
- DirectorLee DanielsStarsAndra DayTrevante RhodesGarrett HedlundFollows Holiday during her career as she is targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover sting operation led by black Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher, with whom she has a tumultuous affair. Two Thumbs Up (A): Despite some issues I had with the narrative, Andra Day's awards worthy performance and Andrew Dunn's cinematography made this a good watch.
- DirectorTim StoryStarsChloë Grace MoretzMichael PeñaColin JostA chaotic battle ensues between Jerry Mouse, who has taken refuge in the Royal Gate Hotel, and Tom Cat, who is hired to drive him away before the day of a big wedding arrives.Thumbs Down (C-): As a huge fan of the original Tom & Jerry cartoons, this was a huge disappointment. In other words, it's just another Tom and Jerry movie where the latter two are barely the focus.
- DirectorTim HillStarsTim HillClancy BrownBill FagerbakkeAfter SpongeBob's beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to the Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home.Thumbs Down (C): Kids who've seen the current run of the beloved cartoon will enjoy it. But despite a few funny jokes, Hans Zimmer & Steve Mazzaro's contribution to the soundtrack, decent animation and Keanu Reeves, it's just a long teaser for the upcoming prequel series on Paramount+. And OG fans such as myself can expect to be massively disappointed. :(
- DirectorCraig BrewerStarsEddie MurphyArsenio HallShari HeadleyThe African monarch Akeem learns he has a long-lost son in the United States and must return to America to meet this unexpected heir and build a relationship with his son.Mixed Bag (C+): It's got a few funny moments here and there. But it just feels more like a remake than a sequel.
- DirectorDon HallCarlos López EstradaPaul BriggsStarsKelly Marie TranAwkwafinaGemma ChanIn a realm known as Kumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon. Two Thumbs Up (A+): One of the best Animated Disney films in recent years. It's beautiful & amazing!
- DirectorJoe CarnahanStarsFrank GrilloMel GibsonNaomi WattsTrapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder, a former special forces agent must unlock the mystery behind his untimely demise. Two Thumbs Up: Balls to the wall insane fun!
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsTom HollandCiara BravoJack ReynorCherry drifts from college dropout to army medic in Iraq - anchored only by his true love, Emily. But after returning from the war with PTSD, his life spirals into drugs and crime as he struggles to find his place in the world.Thumbs Down (C): Tom Holland gives a great harrowing performance as the lead and Tom Sigel's cinematography is great. And credit to the Russo Brothers for tackling a mature subject matter. But I left a bit disappointed at the end of it all, and I'll just say it, Tony Scott's Domino was a much better movie.
- DirectorRegina KingStarsKingsley Ben-AdirEli GoreeAldis HodgeA fictional account of one incredible night where icons Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered discussing their roles in the Civil Rights Movement and cultural upheaval of the 60s.Two Thumbs Up (A+): An amazing directorial debut from Regina King!!!!!!!!!
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsHenry CavillBen AffleckGal GadotDetermined to ensure that Superman's ultimate sacrifice wasn't in vain, Bruce Wayne recruits a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. Two Thumbs Up (A+): A far superior cut of the movie we were supposed to get in 2017 that lives up to the hype. And that's all I have to say for now.
- DirectorKornél MundruczóStarsVanessa KirbyShia LaBeoufEllen BurstynWhen a young mother's home birth ends in unfathomable tragedy, she begins a year-long odyssey of mourning that fractures relationships with loved ones in this deeply personal story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss. Two Thumbs Up: Vanessa Kirby and the rest of the supporting cast give great performances. It may be a slow burn (and for good reason), but it is definitely worth checking out at least once!
- DirectorRamin BahraniStarsAdarsh GouravRajkummar RaoPriyanka Chopra JonasAn ambitious Indian driver uses his wit and cunning to escape from poverty and rise to the top. An epic journey based on the New York Times bestseller. Two Thumbs Up: Much like Pieces of a Woman, it's a slow burn, but it's worth checking out at least once!
- DirectorAdam WingardStarsAlexander SkarsgårdMillie Bobby BrownRebecca HallThe epic next chapter in the cinematic Monsterverse pits two of the greatest icons in motion picture history against each other--the fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong--with humanity caught in the balance. Two Thumbs Up: A step up from Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the best film in Legendary's MonsterVerse!!
