- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks. This movie is everything a Deadpool fan could want. The story is great, the acting is superb, and everything about this movie is quintessentially "Deadpool" in every way. Chock full of humor, gore, language and sex, Deadpool is a comic book character definitely not for kids, and the movie does him justice in a way I never thought it would. This might very well be my new favorite movie of all time.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.A great action/drama with a lot of comedy thrown in, this is the epitome of a "guy movie." If you've ever read anything by Chuck Palahniuk, you have a good idea what to expect from this movie based on his book of the same name. Bonus points go to Fight Club for being almost exactly like the book in every way, a rare sight indeed in Hollywood.
- DirectorTerry GilliamTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseEric IdleKing Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table embark on a surreal, low-budget search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles. The very best comedy ever created, period. John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, and Terry Gilliam are names you should memorize and watch everything they've ever done. Monty Python was a group of the most brilliant comic minds Britain has ever produced, and the Holy Grail was their best work. This is the kind of movie that you can watch a hundred times and still get something new out of it, as subtle jokes are littered (you might call it "Spam" even) throughout the entire movie. If you haven't seen this movie, you haven't lived.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanThe aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.In my opinion, this was the best of the trilogy. The Godfather is the perfect mafia movie, balancing the underworld of crime with the higher themes of loyalty and family. Definitely a must-see.
- DirectorTroy DuffyStarsWillem DafoeSean Patrick FlaneryNorman ReedusTwo Irish Catholic brothers become vigilantes and wipe out Boston's criminal underworld in the name of God.The Boondock Saints is a fun and furious ride telling the story of two Irish brothers who receive a mission from God to rid the city of its corrupt mob leaders. It's hilarious to watch these two bungle their way through their first few hits, and Rocco killing the cat is one of my all-time favorite comedy scenes, but the movie also raises some interesting questions about morality and the judicial system. Willem Defoe does a great job in his supporting role as a gay, possibly insane police detective, and the flashback-style investigation is brilliant. Everyone should see this movie.
- DirectorAlex ProyasStarsBrandon LeeMichael WincottRochelle DavisA man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder.I can't talk about The Crow without mentioning Brandon Lee's tragic death on the set in the final days of filming. This was his first and final starring role, and he does an incredible job as a man who was killed on the night before Halloween, only to return from the grave to avenge the murder of himself and his fiancee. Based on a graphic novel by James O'Barr, who wrote the story to help him deal with the death of his girlfriend, The Crow is dripping with emotion and very well made.
- DirectorXavier GensStarsTimothy OlyphantDougray ScottOlga KurylenkoA gun-for-hire known only as Agent 47 hired by a group known only as 'The Organization' is ensnared in a political conspiracy, which finds him pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Russia and Eastern Europe. In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated movies I've seen. Timothy Oliphant does a great job as agent 47 in a compelling story of revenge and redemption. It's nothing we haven't seen before in countless action movies, but it's well done and the fact that the protagonist is a "killer for hire" makes it that much more interesting. If you're going to watch this (which you should), make sure to get the unrated version. The unrated version doesn't add much, but the bits that it does add are helpful in making the movie a bit more gritty and real.
- DirectorJames McTeigueStarsRainRick YuneNaomie HarrisA young ninja turns his back on the orphanage that raised him, leading to a confrontation with a fellow ninja from the clan.Bloody martial arts movies will always be one of my favorite genres, and Ninja Assassin is a bloody good one. I wasn't expecting much when I first watched this, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a good story and great acting. It's unrealistic and over-the-top, but it's very well made and a lot of fun to watch. If you like gritty movies where the blood flows in rivers, this is a must-see.
- DirectorWill GluckStarsMila KunisJustin TimberlakePatricia ClarksonA young man and woman decide to take their friendship to the next level without becoming a couple, but soon discover that adding sex only leads to complications. The great thing about this movie is the fact that it's a romantic comedy about two people who are sick of romantic comedies. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake play successful business professionals who are sick of trying to find Hollywood's version of "true love" and swear off dating in favor of a "friends with benefits" agreement. I was not expecting to care so much for the characters in a movie like this, but it's a very compelling romance with a lot of laughs along the way.
- DirectorZack KellerEd SkudderStarsEd SkudderZack KellerEric BauzaRed and Blue journey around the world to find The Great Sword of Destiny. Blue discovers that Red was never his friend at all, now they are enemies and are in worst situations imaginable.Based on the webseries of the same name, Dick Figures: The Movie is a hilarious, action-packed tale of friendship, ninjas and boobs. If you want a family-friendly cartoon, look somewhere else, ANYWHERE else. But if you like fart jokes and epic battles with ninjas in airplanes and making fun of the French, this is the perfect movie for you. I've been a follower of the webseries for several years, and this movie is a perfect adaptation that remains true to the characters while adding a layer of depth and drama the webseries seldom shows.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsMark WahlbergMichael PeñaRhona MitraA marksman living in exile is coaxed back into action after hearing of a plot to kill the President. After being-double crossed for the attempt and on the run, he sets out for the real killer and the truth.Mark Wahlberg is one of my favorite actors, mostly because of this movie. He does a great job playing an average guy put into a terrible situation. He's not a trained assassin like Jason Bourne, and he's not a super-spy like James Bond. His initials aren't even J.B. Instead, he's just an ex-sniper who gets blamed for an assassination attempt he didn't commit. It's easy to relate to Wahlberg's character, as he tries to figure out what's going on and why he is being framed, and there's nothing more satisfying than watching him destroy the people who set him up.
- DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsSeth RogenJames FrancoGary ColeA process server and his marijuana dealer wind up on the run from hitmen and a corrupt police officer after he witnesses his dealer's boss murder a competitor while trying to serve papers on him.Stoner comedy at its finest. Seth Rogen and James Franco play a process server and his drug dealer, who get in over their heads when Rogen's character witnesses a murder committed by none other than the guy who grows the weed that he sells to the guy who sells it to Franco who then sells it to Rogen. If that's hard to follow, you're obviously not stoned enough to watch this movie.
- DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsGerard ButlerEmmy RossumPatrick WilsonA young soprano becomes the obsession of a disfigured and murderous musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opéra House. There's a reason The Phantom of the Opera is one of the longest-running plays on Broadway. The characters are compelling, the story is gripping, and the movie brings it to life in a new way that only cinema can. I've seen the show on Broadway, and I consider that one of the best life experiences I've ever had, and I highly recommend seeing it there if you can. If you can't, this movie is the next best thing. Gerard Butler portrays the phantom with emotion and honesty, and you can't help but wonder if he wasn't really a good guy the entire time.
