- DirectorSidney LumetStarsAli MacGrawAlan KingMyrna LoyA married, egotistical, middle-aged head of a corporate empire man and his mistress and protegee, who wants a more serious commitment and ends up dating a younger man, are in a casual love/hate relationship and engage in a battle of wits.I have no idea how to describe this movie other than it portrays how the stupid but shrewd wisdom of age trumps the vacuous, callow stupidity of youth. Alan King is perfect and perfectly funny as Ali McGraw's boss and older lover.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsHumphrey BogartIngrid BergmanPaul HenreidA cynical expatriate American cafe owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco. With exception of the flashback in Paris, the most romantic movie ever made.
- DirectorAlan RudolphStarsGeneviève BujoldKeith CarradineLesley Ann WarrenLove doctor radio host Nancy, bar owner Eve, Pearl, drifter Mickey et al meet in LA.A hilarious, deeply romantic movie. Most people disagree. Even my best friends don't get what I see in this movie. But after multiple viewings, I still love it. Keith Carradine, Genevieve Bujold and Lesley Ann Warren are, well, just perfect. No movie like it. One of a kind.
- DirectorAndrew V. McLaglenStarsJames StewartDoug McClureGlenn CorbettA Virginia farmer who has vowed to remain neutral during the Civil War is spurred into action when his youngest son is taken by Union soldiers.Great anti-war, pro-freedom movie that is also a moving family drama. Takes place during the American Civil War. Great dialogue of a quality you don't see in very many movies. E.g. Charlie Anderson's (James Stewart) very funny grace before dinner at the beginning of the film. You'll also cry your eyes out. It's violent at times but it's a movie I watched with my kids to our great enjoyment and education.
- DirectorWerner HerzogStarsNicolas CageEva MendesRussell M. HaeuserTerence McDonagh is a drug- and gambling-addled detective in post-Katrina New Orleans investigating the killing of five Senegalese immigrants.Weird, compelling Herzog at the top of his game. For once, Nicholas Cage is terrific and Val Kilmer is just sooooo weird. And the lizards....
- DirectorBrad BirdJan PinkavaStarsBrad GarrettLou RomanoPatton OswaltA rat who can cook makes an unusual alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous Paris restaurant.Brad Bird celebrates excellence. Pixar's best ever.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsEli MarienthalHarry Connick Jr.Jennifer AnistonA young boy befriends a giant robot from outer space that a paranoid government agent wants to destroy.Brad Bird's first feature film. A story about the relationship between a young boy and a huge robot from space. As the relationship grows into true friendship, well, bring lots of kleenex. It also portrays the US military as a pack of murderous idiots. So accurate.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsJodi BensonSamuel E. WrightRene AuberjonoisA mermaid princess makes a Faustian bargain in an attempt to become human and win a prince's love.Great music and one of the tightest, most creative story structures I've ever seen on the screen. Tension builds up and releases in multiple creative very satisfying ways.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.Of course. Although it doesn't hold up as well on a 2nd viewing.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.Banal subject matter elevated by hilarious dialogue and one of the most inventively clever story structures ever conceived. Quentin has never topped this one.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsTom HanksRobin WrightGary SiniseThe history of the United States from the 1950s to the '70s unfolds from the perspective of an Alabama man with an IQ of 75, who yearns to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart.A course in what constitutes a healthy psychological outlook in under 3 hours. It's stoicism brought up to the 20th century. Not perfect but good enough.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneCarrie-Anne MossWhen a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.Only the first one. The W bro's create a metaphor that's pretty obvious but carry it off with panache.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsDaveigh ChaseSuzanne PleshetteMiyu IrinoDuring her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.Miyazaki's greatest. Maybe the greatest animated movie ever made. Timeless tale of a young girl who may be the most intrepid, dauntless movie hero or heroine ever created. Just brilliant. There is nothing like it in imaginative literature or cinematic storytelling.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsJean RenoGary OldmanNatalie Portman12-year-old Mathilda is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. An unusual relationship forms as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade.Tale of an unlikely but touching friendship between a professional hit man and a 13 year old girl. Surprisingly moving. Jean Reno is emotionally resonant as the hit man who befriends an adolescent Natalie Portman, who has never topped this performance.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsGuy PearceCarrie-Anne MossJoe PantolianoA man with short-term memory loss attempts to track down his wife's murderer. An intellectual tour de force from Christopher Nolan. The movie is a puzzle with a shocking denouement that, for once, is utterly unexpected and creatively satisfying, if sad. Simply an amazing movie experience. Anyone who claims they figured out the denouement ahead of time is lying.
- 19641h 35mPG8.4 (519K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.Kubrick's hilarious satirical take on nuclear war. Peter Sellers and George C. Scott are brilliant. Sellers is actually beyond brilliant in three different roles, one of which is US President Merkin Muffley (anyone know what a merkin is?). Sterling Hayden as a right wing kook general Jack D. Ripper, Keenan Wynn as Col. "Bat" Guano and Slim Pickens as Maj. "King" Kong are perfect.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsToshirô MifuneEijirô TônoTatsuya NakadaiA crafty ronin comes to a town divided by two criminal gangs and decides to play them against each other to free the town.Kurosawa's take on a sub-genre of American western transferred to 17th or 18th century Japan that is better than any western ever made. Mifune is perfection as the wandering ronin who resolves a Hatfields and McCoys feud in a Japanese village by himself and with his honor intact. The sequel Sanjuro is almost as good. Both are also hilarious.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsJason StathamBrad PittStephen GrahamUnscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers and supposedly Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond.Okay, this movie is simply pure fun from start to finish with a terrific surprise ending. Watch it for Brad Pitt's amazing performance as a gypsy Mick boxer who speaks a wild dialect that no one including the viewer can understand but that is consistently very, very funny. This is the movie in which you realize that Pitt is not just a pretty boy but a great actor.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsTakashi ShimuraNobuo KanekoShin'ichi HimoriA bureaucrat tries to find meaning in his life after he discovers he has terminal cancer.Just watch this movie by the great Kurosawa. Almost the exact opposite of his Yojimbo. One of the most moving cinematic feats of all time. My son turned me on to it, for which I am deeply grateful.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsKim Hye-jaWon BinJin GooA mother desperately searches for the killer who framed her son for a girl's horrific murder.A masterpiece. Watching this was when I realized that certain Koreans had become masters of the modern cinema. The images are unlike anything I've ever seen in a movie theatre. E.g. the mother of the title dancing alone in a field of grain at the beginning and then again at the end on a crowded bus... unforgettable. Or the indelible images of a small human figure moving within the frame of a vast natural backdrop. Pure artistic genius.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsCary ElwesMandy PatinkinRobin WrightA bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
Is there anyone who doesn't love this movie? - DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.Richard Linklater's first volume of a hauntingly romantic trilogy
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyVernon DobtcheffNine years after Jesse and Celine first met, they encounter each other again on the French leg of Jesse's book tour.2nd and perhaps the best installment of Linklater's unforgettable romantic trilogy. One of those movies that is so purely cinematic that you cannot describe in words how its magic draws you in and thoroughly enchants you.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpySeamus Davey-FitzpatrickWe meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna.Last installment of Linklater's 'Before' trilogy. Harsher and more anguished than the first two but equally riveting in ways inexplicable.
- DirectorJuan José CampanellaStarsRicardo DarínSoledad VillamilPablo RagoA retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later.Ricardo Darin proves he's one of the finest, most magnetic actors of the 21st century.
