- DirectorChris FisherStarsJim CaviezelKevin ChapmanAmy AckerThe team seeks justice for Carter's murder, but Finch realizes that one person may go too far in the battle against HR. Meanwhile, NYPD officer Patrick Simmons' number comes up.My favorite episode from my favorite show. I've said plenty about this episode in a previous list, and I'll gladly say it again. The direction and writing are stunning, with an opening sequence that is a marvel in visual storytelling and a script that shows character development in the best way. It's a masterpiece in my opinion.
- DirectorJohn SlatteryStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserWhile Lane needs some help closing with a potential new client, Peter begins to crack under the pressure of both his home life and work life. The definitive episode of Mad Men in my opinion. It perfectly shows the core themes of the show through focusing on one of the show's most unique characters, accentuating on the themes of identity, adultery and masculinity. John Slattery's direction, along with Matthew Weiner and Frank Pierson's script, makes this episode one of my favorites ever.
- DirectorVince GilliganStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulJesse is brought to the FBI for questioning on his knowledge of ricin. In a last effort to kill Gus, Walt must ask for help from an old enemy. This isn't the best Breaking Bad episode. Not at all. But it is my favorite, pushing Walt to his absolute limit against Gus. It's taut, bringing close to a spectacular chapter in Breaking Bad's story. In my opinion, it's Vince Gilligan's best as director on the show.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanMichael OntkeanMädchen AmickCooper and the One-Armed Man inspect guests at the Great Northern. Hawk finds Harold Smith dead - with a mysterious suicide note and the diary torn to shreds. Leo speaks to Bobby about "new shoes."There isn't TV quite like this, it's expert in every way. Mark Frost's fantastic script accentuates the eccentric direction of David Lynch. Truly the most important, the most satisfying, dramatic and thrilling episode of Twin Peaks. Truly the peak of Twin Peaks.
- DirectorCraig ZobelStarsJustin TherouxAmy BrennemanChristopher EcclestonIn the wake of Kevin's desperate decision to vanquish Patti, questions and answers emerge as the world adjusts to the repercussions of what comes next.I skipped The Leftovers whilst it was on the air and I truly regret doing so. My friend recommended this show to me and the journey leading to this episode was amazing, but this episode in itself was amazing. The acting, particularly from Justin Theroux (who singlehandedly carries the episode) Ann Dowd, was excellent, Craig Zobel's direction keeps us invested in the action, the philosophy behind this episode's story gave it a true sense of amazement. I love this show and this episode the more I think about it.
- DirectorSteve BuscemiStarsJames GandolfiniLorraine BraccoEdie FalcoWhile Silvio has the flu, Chris and Paulie run his collections for him, which results in the pair getting lost in the woods and nearly freezing to death while Tony's affair with Gloria goes sour as does Meadow's relationship with Jackie Jr.The best episode of The Sopranos, nothing comes close. This episode just edges out of being in the top five. Where to start with this one... Well, in a series that unfolds like a book, this is an episode that is distinctly self contained, much like the College episode (another favorite of mine). As well as focusing on our protagonist, Tony, and his scenes with Gloria, the meat of this episode focuses on Paulie and Chris. The story that these two go through is both darkly hilarious and humanizing for both of them, playing up the absurdity of the predicament that they're in. And it's brought together by a damn good script from Terence Winter and fantastic direction from Steve Buscemi.
- DirectorJustin LinStarsJoel McHaleGillian JacobsDanny PudiGreendale Community College is transformed into an apocalyptic war zone when the dean promises the winner of a paintball competition priority registration, and it could fan the flames of sexual tension between Jeff and Britta.Justin Lin's best work. No, seriously, *beep* the Fast & Furious movies, this is his best utilization of intense action, whilst still remaining so funny. Every action movie from The Matrix to Die Hard to The Warriors to Terminator 2 is used in homage. It's completely brilliant, an amazing parody, and one of the best sitcom episodes ever made.
- DirectorJack BenderStarsPeter DinklageEmilia ClarkeKit HaringtonSansa and Jon make plans. Arya is given another chance to prove herself. Jorah confesses a secret to Daenerys. Tyrion meets with a red priestess. Yara finds her rule tested. Bran discovers the origin of the White Walkers. My favorite episode of Game of Thrones, managing to emphasize the new threat that looms whilst also bringing one story full circle. The action was intense and effective, sequences were scary, intriguing and impacting.
- 1990–199147mTV-148.9 (6.8K)TV EpisodeDirectorDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanMichael OntkeanMädchen AmickBen Horne's brother, Jerry, arrives in Twin Peaks; together they travel to One Eyed Jack's and meet with the madam, Blackie O'Reilly. Audrey leaves a clue for Cooper. Deputy Hawk finds a bloody towel near the crime scene.A ground-breaking episode within the saga of Twin Peaks. Peculiar, with a brilliant script and some of David Lynch's most disquieting direction, all leading to a sequence that is completely unforgettable.
- DirectorChris FisherStarsJim CaviezelKevin ChapmanAmy AckerSamaritan launches a cyber-attack on the stock exchange, leaving the team with no choice but to embark on a possible suicide mission in a desperate attempt to stop a global economic catastrophe.I've already spoke about this episode a plenty too. It's got such an originality, an amazing emotional impact, brilliant action. It may definitely be the peak of the show, but it comes so shy of being my fave.
- DirectorThor FreudenthalStarsGrant GustinCandice PattonDanielle PanabakerMark Mardon, returns to seek revenge on Joe for the death of Clyde, bearing the same weather-manipulation powers as his deceased sibling.Even though I've found this show to be quite hit and miss (especially in Season 3), this episode has had a place in my heart ever since I first viewed it. It was thrilling, confusing (in a good way) and most of all, fun. I sincerely hope The Flash returns to form some day, because this reminds me of how spectacular the show can be.
- DirectorJed WhedonStarsClark GreggMing-Na WenChloe BennetAs Radcliffe and Aida's plan goes into action, Fitz and Simmons are trapped in the Playground unsure of which of their friends are real and which ones have been replaced by LMDs.I've always been a fan of this show, even since it's rocky beginning, but it has since cemented itself as the best superhero show on television (in my opinion of course). Many episodes of the show have impressed me and entertained me, but this episode floored me. It was a spectacle, leaving mystery and intrigue in its wake with Hitchcockian suspense. I love it.
- DirectorJesse WarnStarsStephen AmellDavid RamseyWilla HollandOliver assembles a group of unlikely allies - Slade, Nyssa, Merlyn and Digger Harkness - to engage in an epic battle against Chase and his army.Arrow, like The Flash, has been extremely hit and miss (partially in the latter half of Season 3 and Season 4 was nearly abysmal), but this episode was one of the best season finales I've ever seen. It showed that Arrow has returned to form, Stephen Amell was amazing against Josh Segarra, and it felt satisfying in a way that Arrow hadn't been in a long ass time.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulThere is a fly loose in the lab. Walt and Jesse must do whatever they can to kill it before it contaminates the meth.Definitely polarizing. It's a very distinctive 45 minutes, focusing more on the relationship between the two leads if anything, it leads to a deeper exploration of how the characters operate, Walt is persistent on catching the fly and Jesse is the one flimsily following along with his plans. Not to mention, the cinematography is beautiful. It's a great bottle episode.
- DirectorDeclan LowneyStarsDermot MorganArdal O'HanlonFrank KellyFather Ted wins the "Golden Cleric", for saving a fellow group of priests from an embarrassing situation.I love Christmas specials of British sitcoms, and Father Ted's special is one of my absolute favorites. Every year, I watch it, and every year, it's still funny. My face hurts from laughing every time.
- DirectorDaniel SackheimStarsBob OdenkirkJonathan BanksRhea SeehornKim and Jimmy face off with Chuck and Howard at the New Mexico Bar Association hearing. This episode is up there with not only the best of Better Call Saul, but the best of Breaking Bad too. Everything about this episode is amazing, it's self centered yet brings closure to a fantastic chapter in the show's story, the acting (particularly from Michael McKean) is award-worthy and an ending that is just unforgettable.
- DirectorDavid GrossmanStarsThomas JaneSteven StraitCas AnvarThe asteroid Eros takes direct collision course towards Earth. The Rocinante chases it. As last defense Earth launches missiles against Eros. Miller went inside Eros and makes a surprising discovery.I love this show, and the books this show is based on (even though I haven't read all of them). It brought the first book to a fantastic close, it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It brought a beautiful sense of closure and it nearly made me cry buckets.
- 2006–200744mTV-148.9 (469)TV EpisodeDirectorDaniel AttiasStarsMatthew PerryAmanda PeetBradley WhitfordDanny helps Jordan with her pregnancy--but what ulterior motives does he have? Meanwhile, Matt tries to put together a Christmas-themed show without being too L.A.-phony, and Harriet gets a movie offer that could advance her career. My favorite episode from (in my opinion) one of the most underrated shows ever. Aaron Sorkin's wordplay shines in this episode, culminating some of his funniest dialogue and his most heartbreaking pathos. It's a brilliant addition to a short-lived show.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulWalt goes on the run. Jesse is taken hostage. Marie forces Skyler to tell Walter, Jr. the truth.Whenever I read about this episode, I've seen many say that this is the greatest episode of television of all time. And having seen it, I can say it's definitely up there. Everyone in the cast gives a stellar performance, Rian Johnson's direction which captures every emotion and shows everything crumbling down is fantastic, and the writing shows that 5 seasons of excellent television has led up to this fantastic episode.
- DirectorMarc DanielsStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyRicardo MontalbanWhile on patrol in deep space, Captain Kirk and his crew find and revive a genetically-engineered world conqueror and his compatriots from Earth's Twentieth Century. The precursor to one of my favorite movies. This episode introduces one of the best villains in science fiction, Khan, played with the intensity and charm of Ricardo Montalban. The scenes with Spock and Kirk are great at exploring their friendship, and the final fight with Kirk and his foil, Khan, is cheesy but excellent.
- DirectorAdam BernsteinStarsBob OdenkirkJonathan BanksRhea SeehornMike's days as a police officer in Philadelphia catch up to him when he's questioned about a tragic event from his past. This episode sheds light on one of the best characters of both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Mike. This episode is a mini film noir, and it packs a punch, giving Mike a huge amount of depth. And the last five minutes of this episode made me cry like a baby.
- DirectorJeff MelmanStarsJoel McHaleGillian JacobsDanny PudiAt Abed and Troy's housewarming party, Jeff decides to let the decision on who gets the pizza rest on the roll of the dice, leaving Abed to contemplate six alternate realities. One of Community's best. It was a laugh-a-minute cavalcade of multiple stories. It shows Community at its best, showcasing how creative, silly and moving it came be.
- DirectorTim HunterStarsKyle MacLachlanMichael OntkeanMädchen AmickAlbert returns to examine Maddy. Cooper asks for 24 hours to finish his case. James and Donna reaffirm their love. Andy accidentally leads Donna and Cooper back to Mrs. Tremond's house. The episode that brings things full circle (or so we think). It's just a winding cycle of tension, bringing closure to a part of the Twin Peaks mythology that was present in the beginning. It ends with possibly the most heartbreaking scene in the whole show.
- DirectorJennifer GetzingerStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserDon deliberately delays returning an important call from California, because he knows it's bad news about Anna. Instead, he keeps himself occupied by forcing Peggy to miss her birthday dinner to pull an all-nighter with him for a client.Without a doubt, the most powerful and moving episode of Mad Men. It's like a play between two different personalities, brought to life by Jon Hamm and Elizabeth Moss' performances. With that said, it showcases how far the characters of Don Draper and Peggy Olsen have come, and makes us as an audience care about both characters in a way that hadn't been seen in the show thus far.
- DirectorJonathan NolanStarsEvan Rachel WoodThandiwe NewtonJeffrey WrightFord unveils his bold new narrative; Dolores embraces her identity; Maeve sets her plan in motion.Jonathan Nolan's third directorial venture is a joy to behold. After a season of secrets and twists and turns, Nolan brings his sense of grit in both the script and the direction, paying off fantastically. The performances are excellent too, particularly from Anthony Hopkins. One of the best season finales I've seen. Season 2 can't come soon enough.
- DirectorKeith GordonStarsJustin TherouxAmy BrennemanChristopher EcclestonReverend Jamison is struggling with people referring to the departed as heroes. He is faced with death threats and a diminishing attendance at his sermons and then finds out he may lose his church due to foreclosure.Three episodes into this show and this episode left me stunned. It's an episode definitely focused on performance, focusing on a particularly layered performance from one of my favorite actors, Christopher Eccleston. Every emotion that Eccleston's character could possibly feel is brought to life by Eccleston: happiness, anger, relief, frustration, persistence. It's one of the best character pieces I've seen in a long time.
- DirectorJuan Jose Meza-LeonWesley ArcherNathan LitzStarsJustin RoilandChris ParnellSpencer GrammerRick, still in galactic prison, puts an intricate escape plan into action. Back on Earth, which is now under federation control, Morty and Summer have an argument about their grandpa. The best April fools joke ever played. After leaving off with a cliffhanger in Season 2, Rick and Morty returns with bombast, giving off a satisfying episode with tonnes of call backs and jokes to episodes previously. The character development of Rick himself is great and his main motivation that is revealed is baffling yet completely hilarious. I love it.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanMichael OntkeanMädchen AmickThe small northwest town of Twin Peaks, Washington is shaken up when the body of the Homecoming Queen, Laura Palmer, is discovered washed up on a riverbank, wrapped in plastic. The starting point of one of the best shows of all time. It changed television, it was nearly film quality, its influence can still be felt to this very day. With direction that is nearly unmatched, giving us an unsettling, yet rather relaxing look into the town of Twin Peaks. Truly one of the best pilots ever made.
- DirectorJames WatkinsStarsAlex LawtherJerome FlynnSusannah DoyleWhen withdrawn Kenny stumbles headlong into an online trap, he is quickly forced into an uneasy alliance with shifty Hector, both at the mercy of persons unknown. If there is one word to describe this episode, it would be uneasy. That's how it made me feel. It's probably the most uneasy hour of television I've sat through, and one of the scariest pieces of media I have ever seen. Quite possibly THE scariest. Charlie Brooker treads over old ground in some regard, our protagonist of this episode is not how he seems, but the episode is done in a way that makes me regard it as my favorite episode out of all of Black Mirror's episodes. With Brooker's subtle script that demands repeat viewings (not that you'd particularly want to considering how bleak this episode is), the direction of James Watkins capturing all the intensity and a twist ending that frightens and unnerves me (I have a fear of the type of people that revealed at the end). The twist ending is more frightening than anything The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits have ever done. This is the best Black Mirror will ever be, in my opinion.
- DirectorChris FisherStarsJim CaviezelKevin ChapmanAmy AckerFinch, Reese, Fusco and Shaw embark on one last mission to prevent Samaritan from destroying The Machine and cementing its hold over mankind.I've said this in another list, but Return 0 is the most perfect finale to a show since Breaking Bad's Felina. In fact, I'd consider this gem of an episode better than that episode. It was a satisfying close to a 103 episode story, it involved heart, it was emotional, every character got a moment to shine. It was a wonder that the show managed to end the way it did consider the season's cut to 13 episodes instead of the usual 20+. I believe that this show will be regarded as a classic in the years to come, and the finale will be one of the reasons why.
- DirectorJohn Howard DaviesStarsJohn CleesePrunella ScalesAndrew SachsA moose head to be hung, a fire drill to be conducted, and German guests are all a bit much for Basil to handle while Sybil's in hospital. One of the finest episodes of British comedy to exist. John Cleese and Connie Booth manage to capture all the right comedic beats, offering some of the finest moments in television history, such as Basil's attempt at a fire alarm drill, to hanging the head of stuffed moose on the wall, to the infamous line, "Don't mention the war". It's amazingly hilarious. One of the greatest comedies to exist.
- DirectorMichelle MacLarenStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulJesse, Gus, and Mike fly down to Mexico, and Jesse cooks the blue meth for the cartel. Walt misses his son's 16th birthday after his fight with Jesse. This episode highlights how much of a threat the character of Gustavo Fring really is. He's a vindictive, calculating kingpin, yet dynamic too. Giancarlo Esposito quite literally makes this episode, I have never supported and loathed a villain as much as Gus and it has an ending that sends chills down my spine.
- DirectorKurt SutterStarsCharlie HunnamKatey SagalMark Boone JuniorBoth the ATF and the Russians prove to be obstacles as the club looks to heal old wounds and settle old scores.Sons of Anarchy's third season finale is one of the most satisfying endings to a series arc I've seen. It was extremely cathartic watching those who betrayed or double-crossed others go in the best way. Truly epic.
- DirectorDennie GordonStarsDan StevensRachel KellerAubrey PlazaDavid tries to find a way out of his predicament.Surreal, dizzying, funny, heartfelt, shocking, frightening... These are just a few words to describe the penultimate episode of Legion's first season. Dan Stevens' performance as David gets constantly better and better as we see multiple sides to the character, and the sequence in black and white will be in my mind for years to come.
- DirectorDavid SemelStarsMatthew PerryAmanda PeetBradley WhitfordTom gets a visit from his uptight conservative parents, Matt and Simon go out to find new African-American writers for the show, and Cal tries to find the identity of a confused elderly man who wanders into the wrap party. This episode is able to deal with many themes all in the span of 45 minutes. Themes such as sexism, race and war. It's an episode where most of the main cast are able to shine, but the most surprising and heartfelt comes from the special guest, the Ugly himself, Eli Wallach. Wallach plays a rather mischievous elderly man with a sad backstory. It's a great episode, save for one moment where it turns unintentionally comedic.
- DirectorJoseph PevneyStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyJoan CollinsWhen a temporarily insane Dr. McCoy accidentally changes history and destroys his time, Kirk and Spock follow him to prevent the disaster, but the price to do so is high. This is not only one of the best Star Trek episodes, this one of the best science fiction stories ever told. Completely imaginative playing into the cosmic themes, the acting is fantastic and the ending is completely heartbreaking. Definitive Trek.
- DirectorPhil AbrahamStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserDon blows off the convention in Los Angeles when he meets a beautiful, exotic woman. Back at Sterling Cooper, a member of the creative staff comes out of the closet, and Duck falls off the wagon and initiates his power play.A relaxing episode of Mad Men, this sees the character of Don Draper go on an adventure in the West Coast. What made this episode a bit of a loved one for me, was how many turns Don's journey took and we along with him are fascinated by what we see too.
- DirectorThomas SchnauzStarsBob OdenkirkJonathan BanksRhea SeehornChuck wants to transfer the Sandpiper case to HHM much to Jimmy's dismay. Mike gets a job offer working as a bodyguard. This was the episode which showed the main turning point in Jimmy McGill's life, this is what I believe to be the episode that's the starting point of him eventually turning into Saul Goodman. It's a terrific episode that ends with heart-wrenching revelation, and some fine acting from both Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean. It's fantastic.
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsPeter DinklageLena HeadeyCharles DanceStannis Baratheon's fleet and army arrive at King's Landing and the battle for the city begins. Cersei plans for her and her children's future. The thing with talking about a show like Game of Thrones is the vast amount of stuff to talk about, even in this subversive episode which only takes place in one location in the show's detailed world. The battle which this episode revolves around is one of the best ever filmed, it was intense, heartbreaking, riveting and even the quieter moments away from the battle were at times more intense than the battle. It's a classic that still lingers in my mind.
- DirectorJeffrey LynchStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightHomer is branded as a pervert after his kids' babysitter misconstrues his retrieval of a candy from the seat of her pants as a sexual advance. This is The Simpsons at their finest. Jokes that hit every time, from the opening that parodies every action movie ever to the Little Mermaid parody. It's hilarious, yet thought provoking with the primary theme. And it can resonate with viewers today.
- DirectorChris FisherStarsJim CaviezelTaraji P. HensonKevin ChapmanFinch and Carter are trying to get Reese out of Riker's, where he is still being kept prisoner by Donnelly. Meanwhile, Fusco is working alone on the next number.I could simply rinse and repeat my Person of Interest list within this list. I simply cannot help myself, this episode is just completely amazing on almost every level. The writing was fantastic, creating a self-aware, intense and subversive take on the show which work with the performances, specifically Jim Caviezel's and Taraji P. Henson's. It's up there with the best.
- DirectorVincent MisianoStarsClark GreggMing-Na WenBrett DaltonS.H.I.E.L.D. has been compromised by an old enemy. The team doesn't know whom to trust. The first season of this show was not the best, I will admit. But this episode was fittingly a turning point in the show, it manage to go from mediocre to a thrill ride. This episode was a mystery that kept me guessing and guessing, it was literally a twist and turn after turn after turn. It was brilliant, I've been a fan since.
- DirectorAllen CoulterStarsJames GandolfiniLorraine BraccoEdie FalcoWhile visiting colleges with Meadow, Tony spots a snitch. Carmela, meanwhile, discovers something about Dr. Melfi.Within its first episode, The Sopranos was able to cement itself as one of the best TV shows of all time. It was by the fifth episode that I realized the show was truly special. Not only that, it's simply an important episode of TV in general. It goes against its own formula, yet it shows the character of Tony Soprano at his most visceral and his most brutal and how that conflicts with his familial relationships, particularly with his children and his wife. It's fantastically written, truly one of David Chase's best works. The hustle never ends. This is the episode that brought in the idea of the anti-hero to modern TV
- DirectorJoe RussoStarsJoel McHaleGillian JacobsDanny PudiIn a "spaghetti western" parody, Pierce tries to get revenge on the rest of the study group during this year's paintball tournament.I love the concept episodes of Community more than anything else. This isn't the funniest episode of Community but it's one of the most fun, and serves as a great parody of Spaghetti Westerns. The action was brilliant, and whenever I can say that a comedy show has great and exciting action, then I think I've done my job.
- DirectorJoe RussoStarsJoel McHaleGillian JacobsDanny PudiWhen the study group learns that there's a sinister plot behind the paintball tournament, they unite the remaining players to defeat the enemy. This follow-up to the previous episode drops the Spaghetti Western tone for something more akin to Star Wars. And it works! The stakes are actually pretty high for the characters and the jokes land every time for me, it's probably the best season finale for Community (though, the final season's finale comes close).
- DirectorBronwen HughesStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulWith the side effects and cost of his treatment mounting, Walt demands that Jesse finds a wholesaler to buy their drugs - which lands him in trouble. This is the episode when Walter White turned to Heisenberg. The character of Walt progresses into something far more ruthless, going toe-to-toe with an even more ruthless drug dealer, Tuco, and winning! It's got a lot of moments of subtle quietness and symbolism which make this episode all the more awesome.
- DirectorCarl FranklinStarsJustin TherouxAmy BrennemanChristopher EcclestonNora goes to New York for the second annual Departure Related Occupations and Practices conference and discovers unsettling circumstances.I want to see Carrie Coon in movies. She's almost too good for TV, and this episode proves why. She carries this whole episode, getting into the eccentricities and tragedy of the character of Nora Durst. Her journey into New York is one that's funny, surreal and saddening. Her scene with Paterson Joseph as Holy Wayne is a memorable one that tugs the heartstrings.
- DirectorDermott DownsStarsGrant GustinCandice PattonDanielle PanabakerWith the Particle Accelerator back online, Barry can go back in time to stop Eobard Thawne on the night of his mother's murder fifteen years ago. This episode was fun as hell, probably one of the most enjoyable episodes of the show. Yet, it was also one of the more compelling episodes, as well as heartbreaking. It showed a sense of intrigue with the time travel aspect of the show and the scene with Barry and his mother was beautiful to watch.
- DirectorEuros LynStarsDavid TennantBillie PiperNoel ClarkeThe Doctor, Mickey and Rose land on a spaceship in the 51st century only to find 18th century Versailles on board, the time of Madame De Pompadour! To find out what's going on the Doctor must enter Versailles and save Madame De Popmpadour but it turns into an emotional roller coaster for the Doctor. One of my favorite episodes from David Tennant's run as The Doctor. It was an extremely touching story, with a romance that was able to be captured in an hour, something that a lot of actual romance films struggle to do in two hours. It was a beautiful hour of television.
- DirectorNiels Arden OplevStarsRami MalekCarly ChaikinPortia DoubledayA notorious hacker takes an interest in cyber security engineer and vigilante styled computer hacker Elliot, while an evil corporation is hacked. One of the best pilots I've ever seen. It's quite an achievement, the cinematography is amazing, capturing the alluring nature of the show, with writing that leaves a mystery to the conspiracies and turns that will eventually be uncovered in the show. And Rami Malek's performance is the icing on the cake, playing the unique character of Elliot Alderson with such a likability and naivety that it makes you root for him all the more due to his personality.
- DirectorChris ManleyStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserLane's entire world comes crashing down after getting busted for forging Don's signature on a check, and Sally experiences an awkward rite of passage while spending the weekend with the Drapers.Quite possibly the most tragic episode of Mad Men. Lane Pryce's troubles eventually catch up to him, with an overbearing sense of doom and dread that makes this episode all the more emotional. There was parallels between Lane and Don's characters that also brought a dynamism to the episode. Quite possibly the second best episode of the fifth season.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanMichael OntkeanMädchen AmickAgent Cooper follows Windom Earle and Annie into the depths of the Black Lodge. Big Ed and Norma get a shock when Nadine suffers head trauma. Andrew and Pete unlock Eckhardt's final box and Audrey stages an act of civil disobedience. To think this show was cancelled with an ending like this. I'm actually struggling to find the words to describe it. It was surreal, but that was expected with David Lynch, it was funny, goofy, thrilling. It seemed to be a mixture of everything. And the ending... that's something that would stick to you for a long time.
- DirectorMiguel SapochnikStarsPeter DinklageLena HeadeyEmilia ClarkeTyrion advises Daenerys. Sansa forces Theon to tell her a secret. Cersei remains stubborn. Arya meets her first target. Jon and Tormund meet with the wildling elders.Despite Season 5 being what I feel to be the weakest season of the show (mostly because it was based on the weakest books for the most part), this was one of my favorite episodes of the show. It showed me that the show can still be insanely unpredictable, as well as terrifying and exciting. It was definitely the peak of the show at the time.
- DirectorCary Joji FukunagaStarsMatthew McConaugheyWoody HarrelsonMichelle MonaghanMartin is faced with marital problems. The search for Reggie Ledoux leads the detectives to a motorcycle gang called the Iron Crusaders, which Rust worked undercover in the past.Really, I can put any episode from True Detective's first season here, and I probably will, it's essentially one giant film. But this episode in particular is a standout achievement. It offers payoff to a rather slow and steady build up from the first three episodes and then everything goes tits up. The performances are amazing as always, especially Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cohle. The philosophical monologues that are spoken still linger in my mind. And that unbroken take at the end... those six minutes were better executed than most movies of 2014.
- DirectorOwen HarrisStarsGugu Mbatha-RawMackenzie DavisDenise BurseWhen Yorkie and Kelly visit San Junipero, a fun-loving beach town full of surf, sun and sex, their lives are changed.Catching this episode after the tense "Shut Up and Dance" was certainly a breath of fresh air. It's definitely the happiest episode in Black Mirror's list of episodes. At the core of this episode is a love story between two girls, both of whom are defined by their own reasons of visiting the titular San Junipero, a paradise of partying, sun and sex. What really makes this episode is Charlie Brooker's script, managing to capture the sense of romance between our leads better than most romance films and his use of music for certain scenes is great too. It's really heartwarming, and that's a surprising thing to say about a show as dark as Black Mirror.
- DirectorChris FisherStarsJim CaviezelKevin ChapmanAmy AckerShaw escapes her captors, but the team is unsure of her mental state when she begins to act paranoid and reckless. This is an episode of Person of Interest that I have yet to talk about on my lists. It's the love child of two of the best episodes, those being "If-Then-Else" and "Relevance", and that makes it completely awesome. Giving us focus on one of the show's best characters and her personal challenges. The ending was completely brilliant as well. I'm surprised it took me this long to talk about it.
- DirectorPeter GouldStarsBob OdenkirkJonathan BanksRhea SeehornMike takes a methodical approach to his mission; someone questions Chuck's capabilities; Jimmy faces a personal dilemma. The best episode of Better Call Saul's second season. It's an episode about decisions and reactions, with the McGill brothers in the forefront of it all. It manages to make small things seem extravagant and the dilemmas that come with the decisions made, which pays off in an ending that is gut wrenching to watch.
- DirectorMatthew WeinerStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserWith another sale on the horizon, Sterling, Cooper, and Draper convince Lane Pryce to fire them and then join them as they start up a new advertising firm. At home, Betty follows through with her plans to divorce Don.I've seen this episode been described as archetypal to the heist movie, in the vein of Ocean's 11. I must say, it's true, the gang is coming together, they have an objective to strive towards, they have a cunning plan to do so. It's a fantastic episode in terms of storytelling through the series at this point, as if everything has led up to that point. It all came together for the best.
- DirectorAlex GravesStarsPeter DinklageNikolaj Coster-WaldauLena HeadeyJoffrey and Margaery's wedding has come. Tyrion breaks up with Shae. Ramsay tries to prove his worth to his father. Bran and company find a Weirwood tree.A satisfying episode of a show which includes absolutely brutal conclusions for some. The episode leads up to a wedding, the sequence of the reception after the wedding is tense, probably one of the most intense parts of the show, and has very little to no action, but it culminates in a moment that is highly satisfying for viewers.
- 1990–199623mTV-PG9.7 (3.3K)TV EpisodeDirectorShelley JensenStarsWill SmithJames AveryDaphne ReidWill's father Lou shows up after 14 years and spends a lot of time with Will. Will's very pleased with this. Uncle Phil, however, thinks Lou will again disappoint his son.Hmm, I like that Will Smith kid. Something tells me he should be in movies. I always remembered this episode ever since I watched it as a kid, it surprised me, I used to watch repeats of this show with my parents and it made me laugh every time but this episode did something different. It made me cry. I only hope that Will Smith fellow gets big.
- DirectorMimi LederStarsJustin TherouxAmy BrennemanChristopher EcclestonNora wishes to step into Dr. Eden and Dr. Bekker's machine. What are the consequences? The Leftovers was a show that went on for the perfect amount of time. It never overstayed its welcome, but watching the show, I was intrigued as to how they would end the third season and by extension, the series as a whole. It worked perfectly. It felt like the closing of a book, a perfect book. The highlights of this episode, in my opinion, was the final scene and the performances of Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon. I nearly cried with this episode.
- DirectorDavid SolomonStarsNathan FillionGina TorresAlan TudykWhen Serenity's life support system fails, Mal orders the crew off the ship - but he stays behind.I have a love-hate relationship with Joss Whedon's work. I hated what I saw of Buffy (I might go back to it but don't hold me to it) and I felt disappointed by Age of Ultron. However, Firefly, Serenity and Toy Story are my favorite works of his, and this is indeed the best episode of Firefly (although Whedon didn't script this episode himself). It was a great episode that shows how the main cast came together, and the cast is the best thing about the show. It was spectacular.
- DirectorMatthew WeinerStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserDon and Peggy prepare to pitch to Burger Chef, one day after the Apollo Moon Landing. Meanwhile, a power struggle in the firm between Sterling and Cutler leaves Don's future hanging in the balance. The best things in life are free. This was the episode that was signalling that things are ending. There was a sense of finality to the episode, with plenty of big moments from a passing of a torch, to a mutual ending of a marriage, to the death of a great character. The ending was also brilliant. This was another great episode of Mad Men.
- DirectorVince GilliganStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulWalter White returns to Albuquerque one last time to secure his family's future and settle old scores.A perfect finale. This show would've been extremely difficult to end if it weren't for Vince Gilligan's vision, the way he writes his characters, the way he directs a shot, everything about this finale episode of Breaking Bad was simply great. The arc of Walter White comes to a satisfying and emotional close, and does so with fantastic style.
- DirectorCarl TibbettsStarsJon HammRafe SpallOona ChaplinThree interconnected tales of technology run amok during the Christmas season are told by two men at a remote outpost in a frozen wilderness.A wonderful Christmas episode, it's probably one of Brooker's best scripts, able to combine three small stories to fit in with the over-branching narrative. It's simultaneously bitingly satirical, tense, funny and imaginative. I'll watch it every Christmas from this point on.
- DirectorJim ReardonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightHomer's laziness begets the ire of his industrious but arrogant new co-worker Frank Grimes; Bart buys a run-down factory for a dollar. One of the wittiest episodes of The Simpsons. Seen through the eyes of a great character in Frank Grimes, it had a darker complex to the episode than previous with some great black humor. A truly great episode and one of the last classics before the show lost its steam.
- DirectorJoseph PevneyStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyThe Enterprise is sent to a mining colony that is being terrorized by a mysterious monster, only to find that the situation is not that simple.A great and thrilling episode. It puts the main trio at the core of it all. It's simultaneously got a sense of dread as well as that cheese factor that Trek is well known for. One of my favorites.

Literally, every time I watch it, I can't help myself but laugh at the troll toll, the princess song, the day man moments. If it weren't for the Book of Mormon, I would consider this the funniest musical ever.
- DirectorMike HollingsworthStarsWill ArnettAmy SedarisAlison BrieAs Bojack is forced to attend an underwater movie festival to promote his new movie, a series of events and the inability to communicate with underwater life ensures that not everything goes as planned.I loved this show since its first season, despite the mixed criticisms it received for its first few episodes, but it has since came into its own. This episode is probably the most unique of the bunch, managing to tell a story (mostly) without dialogue, showing the character of BoJack as he tries to do the right thing. This episode takes cues from Charlie Chaplin (most notably The Kid), Buster Keaton and its use of sight gags is reminiscent of Jacques Tati, three greats in visual comedy. This episode is able to stand among some of the best works of those three greats.
- DirectorMiguel SapochnikStarsPeter DinklageKit HaringtonEmilia ClarkeJon and Sansa face Ramsay Bolton on the fields of Winterfell. Daenerys strikes back at her enemies. Theon and Yara arrive in Meereen.Well, here it is, the highest rated anything on IMDb. It's not hard to see why, you hardly get spectacle like this in film, much less on television. Beautifully directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who also directed Hardhome, he has brought us another terrifying and gripping battle, it was bloody and nerve-wrecking. The dialogue scenes, particularly the ones between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton, who perfectly compliment each other with their performances. It all ends with a perfectly satisfying conclusion. It may not be my fave Game of Thrones episode, but it's certainly up there.
- DirectorScott HornbacherStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserA peaceful hotel getaway ends in disaster for Don and Megan, an LSD trip could have a disastrous effect on Roger's marriage, and Peggy loses her cool after an unsuccessful pitch meeting. An episode that breaks away from the Mad Men formula, showcasing a more experimental structure in its storytelling. The three storylines which this episode focuses on all run in parallel with each other, showcasing the theme of the passage of time. It also has one of the best sequences in the series, all I can say is it's pretty trippy. It might not be the most nuanced of the fifth season of Mad Men, but it's certainly the most unique.
- DirectorJohn PattersonStarsJames GandolfiniLorraine BraccoEdie FalcoTony gets sick from food poisoning and blames Artie's restaurant. Pussy, meanwhile, reaches the end of the line.A tight season finale to a great season. It was darkly funny, with a great use of dream sequences, yet, it was tragic, bringing a new side to Tony, showing that he is conflicted in valuing friendship or his values when it comes to another character. Unpredictable, and beautiful, a great episode.
- DirectorChristoph SchreweStarsRami MalekCarly ChaikinPortia DoubledayAllsafe is hacked and Elliot is meeting White Rose. Tyrell is interrogated by the police and Elliot remembers who he really is.The thing I like the most about Mr. Robot is the hero of the show, Elliot. He's unique, and unlike any protagonist I've seen in a television show, and it's this episode that brings a new dynamic to his character that was right under our noses. It taught me to be a lot more invested in the show, and most shows in general, and I got to say that's one of the best compliments I can say about a show.
- DirectorThomas SchlammeStarsMatthew PerryAmanda PeetBradley WhitfordWhen the Executive Producer of sketch show 'Studio 60' has an on-air meltdown, new network president Jordan McDeere hires Danny Tripp and Matt Albie to replace him and save the show. One of my favorite pilots. It left me completely invested from it's opening scene to the upbeat ending. Aaron Sorkin's script brought his recognizable sharp tongue to his characters as well as an energy that Thomas Schlamme's direction was able to capture, being able to zip from place to place without feeling jarring.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsAndrew LincolnJon BernthalSarah Wayne CalliesDeputy Sheriff Rick Grimes awakens from a coma, and searches for his family in a world ravaged by the undead.Okay, I still watch The Walking Dead, even though it has really, REALLY fallen downhill (save for Negan), I have to say that the pilot episode is one of the best pilots I've seen and I keep hoping to see more good episodes instead of meandering nonsense. It was uncompromising in showing the world at its most bare bones (in an almost literal sense too), whilst showing the people desperately cling to a hopeful outcome, but that really comes down to the direction and writing of Frank Darabont. If only AMC never fired the man, then I think the show would still have a spark to it.
- DirectorNicole KassellStarsJustin TherouxAmy BrennemanChristopher EcclestonMatt takes his wife outside Miracle to seek answers about her condition but struggles to keep her safe from desperate tourists outside the town's gates. If there's one character in The Leftovers that I would consider my favorite, it would have to be Matt. Christopher Eccleston's performance as Matt is excellent in every episode he was in. This episode, focusing on Matt, is one of the very best of the show. Much like the previous episode that focused on Matt, it shows him going through hardship after hardships, and offering another mystery to the show.
- DirectorDominic PolcinoWesley ArcherNathan LitzStarsJustin RoilandChris ParnellSpencer GrammerWhilst Rick and Morty go off to adventure in Atlantis, we take a look at how the Citadel has rebuilt itself since both Rick and Morty visited. You ever watch an episode of a show and just know it's become one of your favorites instantly? This episode pretty much did that. Subverting expectations and going in a completely different direction, offering a bitingly funny and satirical parody of movies such as Crash. I would go further but if you could watch any five Rick and Morty episodes, make sure this is one of them.
- DirectorPeter WellerStarsCharlie HunnamKatey SagalMark Boone JuniorTension mounts as the club makes a bold move to finally get out of guns.Marking one of the more pivotal episodes in the show, and showing that this is the beginning of the end, this episode brings an end to a just chapter in the show, going from something that seems simple and then takes a twist that was just unforgettable. And even though I wanted the twist to become a little more crazy, I was satisfied nonetheless.
- DirectorHettie MacdonaldStarsDavid TennantFreema AgyemanCarey MulliganSally Sparrow receives a cryptic message from the Doctor about a mysterious new enemy species that is after the TARDIS.Well, this certainly fueled my goddamn nightmares when I was younger. I have mixed opinions when it comes to Steven Moffat, but when he wants to, he can certainly write a damn good self contained story (his longer formed stories are not as good in my opinion). This was a perfect mixture of horror, mystery and suspense. Those *beep* monsters in the Weeping Angels are probably the most terrifying things ever encountered in the show, and it's more terrifying because the Doctor himself can't help the leads of this story as much as he can.
- DirectorJohn PattersonStarsJames GandolfiniLorraine BraccoEdie FalcoJunior's trial comes to an end, but Tony's trials are just getting underway. Also, the Sopranos almost purchase a house on the beach. In a show that is known for being quite violent, this episode focuses on something more intense, Tony and Carmela's marriage. From the beginning, their relationship has been tumultuous and rather shaky at best. Their marriage is front and center, and becomes heated and intense due to the fantastic script, direction and performances from James Gandolfini and Edie Falco.

This episode is a great favorite of mine, because it brings Walter and Jesse against their first adversary in a brilliant way, and proceeds to put them at the forefront of the drug trade.
- DirectorFrederick E.O. ToyeStarsEvan Rachel WoodThandiwe NewtonJeffrey WrightDolores, William and Lawrence journey into treacherous terrain; Maeve presents her demand; Bernard considers his next move.A shocker of an episode, showing a deceitful side to the mythology of the show. This episode just goes to show that Jonathan Nolan is the man to go when you want stories on AI. The direction is sublime and the performances are excellent, particularly Anthony Hopkins, who continually surprises and shows a disturbing amount of control.

Cooper gets Jacques Renault to reveal the details of Laura's last night in the cabin. Deputy Andy saves Truman's life and apprehends Renault.David Lynch and Mark Frost might go down as the men who simultaneously morphed television into what it is today. Mark Frost helms this episode in both the script and the director's chair, his only directorial effort on the show. And while I do feel in some regard that he may have crammed a little too much into the show, he shows a lot of plot progression and a lot of twists, making this a fitting ending to the first season. And the cliffhangers are amazing.
- DirectorJack BenderStarsNaveen AndrewsEmilie de RavinMatthew FoxWhen the survivors run out of food, Locke, Kate, and Michael go out hunting for boar. Michael gets injured, so he and Kate go back. But Locke stays out hunting, and ends up running into the creature living in the jungle. This episode is a very surprising one, and one of Lost's very best. It took one of the show's most mysterious and compelling characters in John Locke and turned his character on his head and the ending twist confirmed Lost's status as a new classic.

Not before Peri stumbles into some highly toxic and lethal plant life. This includes Parts 1-4. Having been a Doctor Who fan for many years, I've only just started getting into the classic series. And I have to say, out of all the classic Doctor Who serials I've seen so far (not trying to go full nerd), this is one of the greatest. It was thrilling, no one throws in a bad performance, the direction was great and Robert Holmes' script is up there with some of the greatest sci-fi works ever.

This is an episode that was made for me. We follow Fitz as he gains help from Lance Hunter to try and find his team. This episode was just a heap load of fun, Iain de Caestecker and Nick Blood's chemistry is fantastic and they really make the episode. Probably one of the best episodes of the show.
- DirectorAaron LongStarsWill ArnettAmy SedarisAlison BrieIn 1963, young socialite Beatrice Sugarman meets the rebellious Butterscotch Horseman at her debutante party.A saddening episode, and I'd never think I'd ever say that about a show focusing on an anthropomorphised horse. We get an insight into BoJack's mother, Beatrice, and we see how she becomes the emotionally distant mother that she becomes to BoJack. It's beautiful yet devastating television.

But Season 3 has blown both Seasons 1 and 2 out of the water, especially with this episode. It's almost as if David Fincher did Birdman, or if Alfonso Cuarón did an adaptation of Watchdogs. It was ambitious, thrilling, well acted and very well directed.

And this episode in particular was excellent; brutal, uncompromising, it showed Frank as I've always wanted to see him in film or TV, as a ruthless marine. I loved every minute of this one.

I never thought I'd say something like that about a Black Mirror episode. It was a simple, yet lovely storyline focusing on the budding relationship between two people, played with utter perfection by Georgina Campbell and Joe Cole. This is very similar to San Junipero, but this is the episode I wished San Junipero should have been. Lovely stuff.

This was an eventful season ender. Bringing an end to one plot thread but also bringing a bigger aspect to another thread. At the centre of this episode is Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond, shedding light on a new character that just makes the show even better.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanLeslie BergerRobert BroskiGotta light?Lynch at his Lynchiest in all honesty. This is Lynch at his most unleashed since Eraserhead. I don't think I've seen a television episode as daring as this one. After you watch this episode you may think what the hell just happened, you think about it and you realise that this is the centrepiece of Twin Peaks, the turning point, I should say. I think I'm going to return to this episode a lot more in future.

And this episode builds up upon a lot of them, most specifically between Harvey and Mike. This also brings to mind a Mad Men-style show, but with a lot more emphasis on style. It was almost like a caper movie, and the high points for me was Erica Lipez's script and Patrick J. Adams' performance, bringing humour and heartbreak in this episode brilliantly.
- DirectorHiro MuraiStarsDonald GloverBrian Tyree HenryLaKeith StanfieldWhen Darius goes to pick up a piano, he meets Teddy Perkins, a strange, eccentric man who makes him feel uneasy.Absolutely horrifying. I never thought I'd say that about Atlanta. It's a show that prides itself on surreal humour, however, I never thought it would go full-on horror. This episode genuinely disturbed me, Donald Glover's portrayal of the titular Teddy Perkins was outstanding, he was dangerous and broken. The tone and photography of the episode was perfectly in tune for a horror. It's my favourite episode of the show so far.

Considering there's so many episodes of the show I enjoy, this one deserves a place amongst them. It went in a direction I was not expecting whatsoever and just went derived into complete anarchy. It was intense thanks to Chris Fisher's direction and Michael Emerson's performance, keeping me on the edge of my seat at all times.
