- StarsMaureen LipmanAmelia ShankleyMiriam MargolyesSara Crewe enters a London boarding school a wealthy lady when she bids her father farewell as he enters the British Army, but her lifestyle quickly vanishes when her father suddenly dies, and Sara must endure a life of servitude. My favorite so far and one of the few that follows the novel while also breathing life into it. The actors all fit with how I originally imagined them and very few details were left out of this six-episode miniseries. It well definitely leave you teary-eyed at the end.
- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsLiesel MatthewsEleanor BronLiam CunninghamSara is sent to a strict boarding school after her father enlists in WWI. When he is presumed dead, the headmistress, knowing she will not receive any more money, forces the girl to become a servant.A sentimental adaptation that takes out a lot of the gritty parts of the story. However, I'm still very biased towards this film and have loved it since I was a child. This version takes several plot points from the 1939 film, but uses them differently, giving heart and a certain magic to the film. I recommend this to everyone, however don't expect it to follow the book.
- DirectorWalter LangWilliam A. SeiterStarsShirley TempleRichard GreeneAnita LouiseA little girl is left by her father in an exclusive seminary for girls, when her father fights in the Second Boer War. Later, when he is presumed dead she is forced to become a servant.A sugary sweet Hollywood version, which stars famous child star Shirley Temple. This film is usually either a hit or miss with most, I found the film ridiculous at certain points. It adds a lot of different plot elements that don't really seem to work 100% (or they don't do anything particularly interesting with them). Also there are way too many adults that sympathize with Sara and don't anything to help her (why were they even there)!
- DirectorMarshall NeilanStarsMary PickfordNorman KerryKatherine GriffithLittle Sara Crewe is placed in a boarding school by her father when he goes off to war, but he does not understand that the headmistress is a cruel, spiteful woman who makes life miserable for Sara.A silent film starring the hottest actress of the time, Mary Pickford. Most people won't watch the version because it's so old (and silent). I found it fairly enjoyable and the little tricks they did with film then were entertaining to see.
- StarsSumi ShimamotoTaeko NakanishiYukiko NashiwaAnime adaption of 1905's children's novel 'A Little Princess'. Sara Crewe arrives in London with her wealthy father to enter Miss Minchin's boarding school for young ladies. Despite an unhappy incident which makes Miss Minchin vexed with her, she leads a contented life until one day, her birthday, the news of the sudden death of her father plunges her into poverty. She is forced to do lowly work for the Seminary and in her situation, she is a welcome target to Miss Minchin and her former fellow pupil Lavinia, who once envied her wealth. But with the help of her friends she made and her own will-power she finds the strength to never give up.(To be watched!) A Japanese anime produced by Toei for their World Masterpiece Theater series. This anime is often considered a classic.
- StarsMirai ShidaShioli KutsunaHiroshi KoizumiSeira was raised in India, but she is sent back to Japan to continue her education at an affluent boarding high school. Although she has lived in luxury, the well-bred Seira is kind and generous, earning her many friends at the school. One person who dislikes Seira is the school's director, though she treats Seira well due to the father's fortune. Then, during Seira's 16th birthday party, the director informs her that her father has died, leaving her penniless. As a result, she is forced to work as a servant in order to pay off her school bills.(Note: I've only seen the first episode so far) A live-action Japanese drama that turns Sara Crewe into a lively Japanese teenager named Seira Kuroda. This version also seems heavily inspired by the 1995 movie (i.e. Seira constantly says "all girls are princesses" and her mother previously attended ths school), while also adding several other dramatic details.
- StarsDeborah MakepeaceLesley DunlopRuth DunningA young girl is relegated to servitude at a boarding school when her father goes missing and is presumed dead.A older adaptation that I can't seem to find anywhere (and that no one else can seem to find either). Wikipedia describes it as "very faithful to the novel" so it's probably good.
- DirectorRomy SuzaraStarsCamille PratsMat Ranillo IIIJean GarciaThe adventures of Sarah as she stays at Miss Minchin's boarding school.A Filipino's take on the novel, also mostly inspired by the anime entry, "Princess Sarah". This version is hard to come by, so I probably won't see it.
- DirectorVladimir GrammatikovStarsAnastasiya MeskovaLyanka GryuIgor YasulovichThe film is set in 1890s London. Sarah lived happily in India with her father, but when he was drafted into military service he placed Sarah in a boarding school in London. Sarah was lonely, but she made some good friends at school. Suddenly her father was announced dead in a mine accident and Sarah became an orphan. Now she goes on a long and dangerous journey to find her father, who loved her and called her a "little princess".A Russian adaptation that is also rare to find.
- StarsSharlene San PedroAlbert MartinezAiAi Delas AlasA young girl is relegated to servitude at a boarding school when her father goes missing and is presumed dead.Another Filipino remake, this time a thirty-episode television series. According to Wikipedia, "[it] took even more creative liberties from the original story".
