- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsFionn WhiteheadBarry KeoghanMark RylanceAllied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.9/10: Other than the way the story is organized being a bit confusing at some points, a few moments where it was hard to understand the dialogue, and a singular bad performance, I loved everything about this movie. It had great suspense and tension, great sound, good acting from almost the whole cast, and as someone who usually needs to have well-defined and fleshed out characters this movie's blank slate characters actually worked for me.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.9/10: The effects, look, development of the world, and designs are all stellar. It continues on with the theme of humanity and adds in the exploration of artificiality vs. realism. With the first two acts are great with the exploration of these themes, an intriguing mystery plot, beautiful visuals. Joi and K are both interesting and well developed characters. Other than a singular plot coincidence (though it really doesn't effect the outcome of the movie that much) and the lousy resistance idea are the only two noticeable problems with the movie.
- DirectorChris McKayStarsWill ArnettMichael CeraRosario DawsonA cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick.9/10: It has a lot of good comedy mixed with a surprising amount of depth directed at Batman's character. It has a lot of creativity to it, it is a well structured and thought out sequel and spinoff, the characters are all fleshed out and developed, and it has good insight into the Batman mythos. Minus some poor jokes and some audio problems, the movie is nearly flawless.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.8/10: It has well developed characters, some very genuine moments, good action, a good premise and story, and acts as a final chapter quite well. It feels like it's trying too hard with its R rating at certain points and the villains are a little underdeveloped.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.8/10: It has good musical numbers, likable characters, good cinematography and aesthetics, and a good story. The writing is well done and very witty at times. Stone and Gosling are both great in the movie, and their best parts are when the music is playing and they're only visually acting. My only complaints are some nitpicks with the musical numbers, the characters are fine but not incredibly interesting, and the movie goes on a little longer than it needed to (the ending could have been Stone at the audition).
- DirectorDylan BankDaniel DiMauroMorgan PehmeStarsRoger StoneDonald TrumpJane MayerA documentary exploring the life and career of notorious Republican dirty trickster and longtime Trump adviser, Roger Stone, who helped create the real estate mogul's political career.8/10: It's very informative about a person whom many viewers may have no knowledge of going into it and it captures Stone's personality and motivations. It does feels a little biased, though that's probably because Stone doesn't shy away from who he really is. It does skip over some of Stone's actions during the 2004, 2008, and 2012 elections or doesn't really cover them, and some of the music choices felt off.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.8/10: It is a little underdeveloped in certain areas, but it has a good mixture of frightening and comedic tones, superb acting jobs all around, fantastic aesthetics, and all of the kids except for Mike are fairly well developed and all of the kids have wonderful chemistry with one another.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammDoc forces Baby, a former getaway driver, to partake in a heist, threatening to hurt his girlfriend if he refuses. But the plan goes awry when their arms dealers turn out to be undercover officers.8/10: Almost everything about this movie is excellent: the acting, the main character, the chemistry between Ansel Elgort and Lily James, the usage of music, the directing, the writing, the look, everything. The one thing that didn't work for me was the ending where it felt like it kept going and I didn't buy Kevin Spacey's actions.
- DirectorTheodore MelfiStarsTaraji P. HensonOctavia SpencerJanelle MonáeThree female African-American mathematicians play a pivotal role in astronaut John Glenn's launch into orbit. Meanwhile, they also have to deal with racial and gender discrimination at work.8/10: It has mostly good acting, directing, and writing, with good handling of the racism angle of the film (with it not being ludicrously done for the most part), I feel like the movie would have worked better focusing on Katherine Goble/Jackson as the other two hidden figures don't have as much of a story or screen time as her, , some of the characters were underwritten and two of the three hidden figures didn't seem to differentiate much character-wise, there were some weird comedic moments to the movie, and the music doesn't fit.
- DirectorTrey Edward ShultsStarsJoel EdgertonChristopher AbbottCarmen EjogoSecure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.8/10: It has very good performances (especially from Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Riley Keough at the end), the atmosphere was really good, the lighting and camerawork was impeccable, and the characters and world were all very believable. My only major gripe is that it was very weak on story and a lot of the scares didn't work because they happened when I knew the son was dreaming.
- DirectorJordan Vogt-RobertsStarsTom HiddlestonSamuel L. JacksonBrie LarsonAfter the Vietnam war, a team of scientists explores an uncharted island in the Pacific, venturing into the domain of the mighty Kong and must fight to escape a primal Eden.7/10: It has enough characterization to make you care about the people involved and understand who they are, wonderful effects, fantastic fast pacing, intense action sequences, and decent acting all around. There are a few too many characters, so some feel underdeveloped and pushed to the sides, there are a few moments where character's actions seem out of character, and it has a couple of tropes that have been overused in recent movies like the iPod shuffle soundtrack and the opening news reel, but other than that there isn't much to complain about. It's a simple, fun action romp.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.7/10: It is genuinely creepy, well acted, and is funny at moments. The stuff with Chris's TSA friend were funny, but his parts are out of a comedy film while Chris's stuff is a horror movie. There are also a few details that feel forced. Overall, a competent and creative movie.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineRobin WrightWhen a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.7/10: It has some well-developed characters with well written arcs, good action, great set pieces, a well done fish-out-of-water storyline, the juxtaposition between Wonder Woman's world and man's world is well handled both physically and metaphorically, and it's nice to see a superhero in a DC movie finally act heroic. The villains were fairly weak characters, the twist at the end didn't really work, some of the acting was pretty bad, and love saying the day is just cringe-worthy.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsCharlize TheronJames McAvoyJohn GoodmanAn undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.7/10: It was a fairly straight forward spy thriller that was elevated by the aesthetics, the cast, and the well choreographed and executed fight scenes. The story and characters are a bit weak and the movie could of ended ten minutes sooner than it did, but it is mainly a fun action romp and it does that extremely well.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.7/10: The story is surprisingly unpredictable, all of the returning characters are great and have something to do, the movie contained just the right amount of material so that is didn't feel bloated or boring, the acting and aesthetics are probably the best of the whole franchise, there are a lot of good minor details throughout and some fun twists on Star Wars references, and the dynamics between most of the characters is fantastic.
The porgs are annoying, the new characters are somewhat lackluster, there is a side plot that could have been cut, Rey and Finn felt underutilized, and a few characters were ultimately pointless additions. - DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsKenneth BranaghPenélope CruzWillem DafoeWhen a murder occurs on the train on which he's travelling, celebrated detective Hercule Poirot is recruited to solve the case.7/10: It's a fairly simple murder mystery with a predictable twist to it, though it's elevated by the talented cast, the technical aspects, and Branagh's directing.
- DirectorEli CraigStarsEvangeline LillyOwen AtlasAdam ScottGary, who has just married Samantha, the woman of his dreams, discovers that her six-year-old son may be the Antichrist.7/10: It has a strong comedic premise, a really good handling of comedy being derived from the scenario being taken seriously, no annoying characters, and some genuinely well written scenes. There are some issues with the pacing, the plot is a bit convenient, and the characters are not as strong as they could be.
- DirectorGreg McLeanStarsJohn Gallagher Jr.Tony GoldwynAdria ArjonaIn a twisted social experiment, eighty Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogotá, Colombia, and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.7/10: It has a good amount of James Gunn's style worked into it, the characters have a little characterization, though there could be more, it has an interesting premise, all of the technical aspects are done well, and there are a few genuinely funny and suspenseful moments. The biggest problems with the movie are with characterization, a few logistical things, and the ending.
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonKaren GillanKevin HartFour teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.6/10: It's like The Breakfast Club meets Jumanji. The characters all have their differing personalities and stereotypes that they fall into and they learn that they're more than that. It has some fun action adventure in it, the characters become more likable as the movie progresses, the comedy isn't funny but it isn't annoying, the underdeveloped antagonist actually works for this, and all of the game-character actors are good. Every character does have an inspirational speech moment where they teach another character to face their fears and challenges, and all of the jokes are either in the trailer or based solely around the juxtaposition of who the people really are and what their game avatars are.
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsA fiercely independent teenager tries to make her own way in the world while wanting to get out of her hometown of Sacramento, California and to get away from her complicated mother and recently-unemployed father.6/10: It has great performances and some well developed characters, though there are certain story elements that seem underdeveloped, should be important but aren't, or are introduced and completely dropped. There isn't really anything connecting all of the story elements other than Lady Bird's character progression, and her progression doesn't feel earned at the end.
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsMichael KeatonNick OffermanJohn Carroll LynchThe story of Ray Kroc, a salesman who turned two brothers' innovative fast food eatery, McDonald's, into the biggest restaurant business in the world, with a combination of ambition, persistence, and ruthlessness.6/10: Strong performances and some good character building, but I felt the writing, story structure, and cinematography were only subpar.
- DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.6/10: Everything until the movie gets to the actual making of The Room is kind of bland and clunky. The progression of Tommy and Greg's relationship is rushed, time jumps make everything feel longer or shorter than they are, and it feels like it's trying to force in a bunch of references that have become quintessential elements of The Room. Once the filming actually starts, the humor starts to work, the characters fall into place, and the pacing works a lot better.
- DirectorGarth DavisStarsDev PatelNicole KidmanRooney MaraA five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.6/10: The first third has nothing of much interest happening in it. There is no direction to where the story might go, nor is Saroo an interesting character to get invested in at that point. Once he's inAustralia, the movie picks up. It has some good performances and some genuinely emotional scenes, though it doesn't really have much else that is noteworthy.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyAnya Taylor-JoyHaley Lu RichardsonThree girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.5/10: James McAvoy and Betty Buckley both do good jobs in their roles, and the three girls are passable most of the time. The ideas behind the split personalities and the rules of it are well constructed and the reveal of this information is dolled out in an interesting way. The problem is this feels like an unfunny comedy a lot of the time, or that it's trying to be a comedy but McAvoy's performance is so good that you take it seriously, which causes a weird juxtaposition.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.5/10: It had wonderful humor and aesthetics, likable characters, and a lot of personality to it, but it was ultimately bogged down by a weak story that had too many antagonists throughout, and the ultimate one's motivation was weak.
