Movies I want to see in 2014
These are the movies that we most want to see in 2014. Some of them because of the talent attached, some of them because we dig the storyline, some simply because we find them intriguing or they sound like a whole heap of fun. We are ready to laugh, cry, cringe, be entertained and be scared in 2014!
Note: All movies have U.S. release dates set for 2014. The release dates may still change as is sometimes the case in Hollywood. Some movies premiered in 2013 but only in limited release or on the festival circuit and will go in wide release in 2014.

- DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge. From the director of such brilliant movies as The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom. Always quirky, always funny, endlessly entertaining.
- DirectorJason BatemanStarsJason BatemanKathryn HahnAllison JanneyA spelling bee loser sets out to exact revenge by finding a loophole and attempting to win as an adult.Jason Bateman is probably one of the best character actors going around currently. His first directorial effort was very well received at Sundance in 2013 and snapped up quickly by Focus Features. A R-rated comedy with the lead guy from Arrested Development? We're in!
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsRussell CroweJennifer ConnellyAnthony HopkinsNoah is chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world.Do we really need to add a description here? It's Darren Aronofsky who helmed The Wrestler and Black Swan which (shock and horror) only one Natalie Portman the Oscar for Best Actress. Not likely the film that gets Aronofsky a Oscar, but we love the big-budget epic story coupled with an A-list cast of the likes of Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerSam WorthingtonTerrence HowardMembers of an elite DEA task force find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house. While The Governator's return to the bright light of Hollywood has been underwhelming so far, we love the fact that he is teaming up with David Ayer, director of gritty, urban, cops-robbers movies such as End of Watch, Training Day and Harsh Times. With R-rated action, Arnie is going bad to the bone along-with a ensemble support cast including an unrecognisable Sam Worthington, a kick-ass Mireille Enos (World War Z), Terrence Howard, Olivia Williams and Josh Holloway.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. The first Captain America film was endlessly entertaining and along with the Thor and Iron-Man movies made The Avengers the mammoth blockbuster that it was. Chris Evans is perfect as the All-American hero and every trailer suggests that the Russo brothers knocked this out of the park. We expect it to be huge and there's only one way to enjoy this spectacle. On the big screen!
- DirectorWally PfisterStarsJohnny DeppRebecca HallMorgan FreemanA scientist's drive for artificial intelligence takes on dangerous implications when his own consciousness is uploaded into one such program. While we aren't quite sure of Capt. Jack Sparrow in the lead role, we love the intriguing story-line and that one of the best cinematographers out there, Wally Pfister is lensing this project. Wally has shot pretty much all of Christopher Nolan's films including all three Batman movies, so we think he may have picked up more than a few handy directing tips. While it won't be an out and out blockbuster, the unique and original story is definitely the drawcard here.
- DirectorMarc WebbStarsAndrew GarfieldEmma StoneJamie FoxxWhen New York is put under siege by Oscorp, it is up to Spider-Man to save the city he swore to protect as well as his loved ones. The jury is still out there on this one. Do we really need another reboot of a franchise that was done so well by Sam Raimi not too long ago? Tobey Maguire captured Peter Parker's personality just right and Spider-Man 2 was probably the best of that trilogy with the subway train scene towards the end one of the best action set-pieces we have ever witnessed! So far, the trailers for this sequel have looked very CGI heavy, Andrew Garfield is still growing into this role and Jamie Foxx as Electro could be hit or miss. We really hope Spidey spins a huge web with this, but Sony are treading on dangerous ground here. You can only mine a site for gold so long before it crashes on you. Could be disappointing!
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsAaron Taylor-JohnsonElizabeth OlsenBryan CranstonThe world is beset by the appearance of monstrous creatures, but one of them may be the only one who can save humanity. Now Sony could learn from Warner Bros. on how to build up excitement for a reboot. When Godzilla was first announced, we all thought of the steaming pile of manure that Godzilla (1998) was! However, all doubts were cast aside once we saw the fantastic teaser trailer a few months ago. Under the very capable hands of Gareth Edwards, Godzilla may finally attain the cult status it deserves with this adaptation of the giant lizard! We bet on this being a monster morsel for the giant lizard.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants. While we don't get to see Matthew Vaughn back at the helm of this next instalment in this new tale of the mutants, all of the old cast is back from X-Men: First Class which re-ignited this tiring franchise. With Hugh Jackman giving this a boost with strong box-office business for The Wolverine, we know interest in the further adventures of Magneto, Storm, The Wolverine and Prof. Charles Xavier is certainly there from the audiences. Bryan Singer has the capability to make good films (The Usual Suspects, X-Men), average films (Jack the Giant Slayer) and bad films (Superman Returns). Which one of these will X-Men: Days of Future Past will be? Only time will tell.
- DirectorRobert StrombergStarsAngelina JolieElle FanningSharlto CopleyA vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess, only to discover that the child could be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.Following in the footsteps of dark and scary adaptations of fairy tales such as Red Riding Hood & Snow-White and the Huntsman, comes Angelina Jolie as the villainous lead in this adaptation of Sleeping Beauty. Dark and brooding, this play's to Angelina Jolie's vampish strengths and we think this could definitely help cement her standing as a bankable A-list Hollywood star in her own right. Move over, Brad, here comes the Queen!
- DirectorDoug LimanStarsTom CruiseEmily BluntBill PaxtonA soldier fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies. While the jury is still out there on Tom Cruise the person, there is no doubt that he still gets projects green lit based solely on his star power. Nearly 52 but looking 40, Cruise is riding high on the solid success of Oblivion and Jack Reacher. Working with proven talent such as the lovely Emily Blunt, director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and written by a well respected writer in Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher, The Usual Suspects), the futuristic, sic-fi tale of a soldier caught in a time loop of his last day in battle with aliens sounds extremely intriguing to us.
- DirectorJosh BooneStarsShailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortNat WolffHazel and Gus are teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especially "An Imperial Affliction", so they embark on a journey to visit an author in Amsterdam. One of the unexpected delights of Alexander Payne's 2011 The Descendants was Shailene Woodley's awkward and poignant portrayal as Clooney's daughter. Just 23, we see a bright future for her in Hollywood. With some serious acting chops, expect Jennifer Lawrence and her to be battling it out for Best Oscar in the Actress category for years to come. A small, indie feature with a young cast and a young director may just be the romantic feature needed to break the monotony of big-budget Hollywood tentpole pictures.
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsChanning TatumJonah HillIce CubeAfter making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college.Who would have guessed that the unlikely adaptation of a beloved TV series starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum could be so entertaining. We were definitely proved wrong as the chemistry between the two leads and them goofing around acting like kids spoke to the inner child in all of us. Breezy and funny without requiring you to put your thinking cap on, 21 Jump Street was endlessly entertaining. The trailer for the sequel brings back the funny twosome again, this time heading to College and we expect nothing but laughs and action from this comedy/action flick.
- DirectorDean DeBloisChris SandersStarsJay BaruchelGerard ButlerChristopher Mintz-PlasseA hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed. The original How to Train Your Dragon is one of our favourite toon movies and should be yours too. A story of lonely and awkward characters bonding and then becoming inseparable friends (never mind one of them is a Dargon) was real and touched us like no other. Re-uniting the original star-cast to bring us a sequel after 5 long years ensures that this one will be an even bigger box-office smash that the original. We are ready to fight through throngs of kids to be first in line to see this one!
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsGary OldmanKeri RussellAndy SerkisThe fragile peace between apes and humans is threatened as mistrust and betrayal threaten to plunge both tribes into a war for dominance over the Earth.Another character from an original movie (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) that we cannot wait to see again. Caesar, as performance captured by the brilliant Andy Serkis and visualised so real by WETA Digital (Peter Jackson, Lord of the Rings) is an unforgettable character and the sequel takes us ahead a few years to show us how the apes under Caesar's leadership are taking over the world. How and why Andy Serkis was not nominated for an Oscar is beyond us. So we'll just do the next best thing and make this new instalment an even bigger hit than the last one. Hail Caesar!
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsChanning TatumMila KunisEddie RedmayneA young woman discovers her destiny as an heiress of intergalactic nobility and must fight to protect the inhabitants of Earth from an ancient and destructive industry. While the Wachowski's (no longer just brothers with Larry now having undergone a sex-change operation and now known as Lana) have not had a major hit since the days of The Matrix, Hollywood still believes in their grand designs and so do Mila Kunis & Channing Tatum. Most likely, their involvement meant Warner Bros. allowed it to be made. Whilst Cloud Atlas was not to everyone's liking, it was a visionary tale with some unbelievable cinematography and heady ideas. We love that the Wachowski's keep on making cerebral sci-fi. While not everyone may not enjoy their latest, we give them full marks for originality and being different in a business dominated by reboots, re-imaginations and remakes.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.Of all the big-budget movies coming out in 2014, we feel this movie is treading the most dangerous ground. A source material that is not universally known, Marvel Studios (Thor, Captain America, Iron-Man, The Avengers) which is owned by Disney may have bitten off more than it's intended audience would like to chew. Like The Watchmen in 2009 before, we see parallels between the two. Will be well-made considering Marvel's pedigree with other projects before it, but drumming up excitement to go see this may be difficult, just as Zack Snyder found out with Watchmen. Could this be the first *beep* to appear in Marvel's armour and will it signal to Hollywood the movie-going audience's waning interest in the world of super-heroes?
- DirectorLasse HallströmStarsHelen MirrenOm PuriManish DayalThe Kadam family leaves India for France where they open a restaurant directly across the road from Madame Mallory's Michelin-starred eatery. While director Lasse Hallstrom normally does soppy romance that we avoid like the plague (Dear John, Safe Haven), his earlier work gives us hope that he has not lost all his talent (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat, The Cider House Rules). A quirky storyline led by the evergreen Helen Mirren suggests that this could be a sleeper hit on the indie circuit and get some strong word of mouth and stay in theatres long enough to make a decent splash at the box office. While we don't hold huge hopes in the American movie market for this, we think intelligent audiences around the world and around the US will welcome this heart-warming tale of David Vs. Goliath set in the high pressure world of Michelin star cuisine
- DirectorFrank MillerRobert RodriguezStarsMickey RourkeJessica AlbaJosh BrolinSome of Sin City's most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with a few of its more reviled inhabitants.Nearly 10 years after the original and after disappointing fare such as Machete, Machete Kills and Spy Kids the umpteenth sequel, Robert Rodriguez finally returns to one of his best source material along with Frank Miller. We dug the hell out of the original with it's eye-catching black and white cinematography coupled with splashes of colour, reminiscent of the comic-book it borrows from. With an ensemble star cast of Hollywood's stars (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Josh Brolin, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Ray Liotta), we think Robert Rodriguez may finally have a smash on his hands. While new audiences still remember the source material? Hard to know, but with DVD and TV viewings, we believe the original crowd will come out for one last hurrah to Sin City.
- DirectorWes BallStarsDylan O'BrienKaya ScodelarioWill PoulterThomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape. Not much is known about this project except that it is adapted from a best-selling novel of the same name by James Dashner (also contributing to the screenplay). Set in a post-apocalyptic world about a young man's efforts to escape a maze and learn his identity, Twentieth Century Fox will be hoping for the same success from this as they managed to get out of Chronicle in 2012 with a cast of relatively unknown actors.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonMarton CsokasChloë Grace MoretzA man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him cannot stand idly by when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters.A movie that we are incredibly excited about. The original series back in the 80's was well-written with superb acting and didn't dumb itself down for it's audiences. With Denzel Washington in the lead reuniting with his Training Day (Best Oscar for Actor) director, the pieces are all there for this to be a cult classic and a surefire hit. Fuqua is coming off the surprising success of Olympus Has Fallen and always does well with gritty, violent source material. Our dark horse candidate of the year.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent. One part David Fincher, one part Ben Affleck and one part best-selling source material from acclaimed novel by Gillian Flynn. Mix with Neil Patrick Harris and pretty girl Rosamund Pike and you have all the ingredients for a critical and commercial smash. We think the world of David Fincher as a director and Affleck has been on a winning run for a while now (still not sure about him as Bruce Wayne/Batman). Could this finally be the movie that wins one of the best directors working currently a elusive Oscar? We certainly hope so!
- DirectorDavid DobkinStarsRobert Downey Jr.Robert DuvallVera FarmigaBig-city lawyer Hank Palmer returns to his childhood home where his father, the town's judge, is suspected of murder. Hank sets out to discover the truth; along the way he reconnects with his estranged family. Now that Tony Stark has been laid to rest (until The Avengers: Age of Ultron at least) we are interested in finding out if Robert Downey Jr. still retains the hunger and passion for some serious acting chops. One for the adults, this drama sees him playing a lawyer who returns home for his mother's funeral only to learn of his estranged father the prime suspect in a murder. With a solid supporting cast in Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio and the ever amazing Robert Duvall (still going strong at 83), we hope this lives up to expectations and features in end of year awards mention lists.
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoSeth RogenRandall ParkDave Skylark and his producer Aaron Rapaport run the celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight". When they land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Jong-Un Kim, they are recruited by the CIA to assassinate him.Starring the leads of 2013's smash, James Franco and Seth Rogen, from the director of Pineapple Express and Superbad, we dig the hell out of this wild concept! A talk-show host and his show producer get an interview with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un and are enlisted by the CIA to assassinate him instead. With Seth Rogen back to his funny ways and Franco showing some unexpected comedic chops in Spring Breakers and This is the End, this whacky comedy could just be the smash out of the blue. Sounds hilarious, but will it translate onto the big screen and connect with audiences?
- DirectorTate TaylorStarsChadwick BosemanNelsan EllisDan AykroydA chronicle of James Brown's rise from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential musicians in history.A biopic on the rise of James Brown from extreme poverty to becoming the Godfather of Soul. A similar project on Ray Charles won Jamie Foxx an Oscar and we feel Chadwick Boseman who was amazing in 42 as Jackie Robinson could repeat in a role that should garner an Oscar nomination at least if he acts his heart out and dances his socks off.
