Elsa is recalled and given the assignment of locating the British spy organization and its members. Through her surveillance of Carl, she meets Hans Teller and recognizes him as Alan, but doesn't let on. Alone, she agrees to flee to Holland with him but her superior officer, Ludwig (Lionel Atwill), is not fooled and is in pursuit.

Following the benefit party, Kitty visits Phil and Freddie's mother, who lives alone in an East Side tenement, and asks her to help stop the bickering between her sons. Mrs. Russo tells Kitty that she has refused to play favorite with either son, and that she has turned down separate invitations from Phil and Freddie to live with them. Joe, a milkman and an aspiring songwriter who adores Mrs. Russo, drives Kitty home and, en route, recites the lyrics of one of his new songs. Later, Mrs. Russo throws a party to bring her sons together, and they sing a song written especially for her. Mrs. Russo eventually consents to live with her two sons in a large apartment, but the arrangement soon sours when the two brothers become embroiled in a jealous rivalry over June. The dispute results in Freddie moving into his own apartment. Although Freddie refuses to speak with Phil, the brothers manage to continue writing songs together. However, when the feud begins to take its toll on the quality of the brothers' songs, Sanders tells Freddie that he will no longer publish their work. Frustrated by his inability to find a new publisher, Freddie decides to start his own publishing business. The company makes little money, and goes bankrupt soon after, but Freddie refuses to accept financial help from band leader Jimmy Dorsey. Later, Kitty enlists Joe's help to force a reconciliation between the estranged brothers. As part of Kitty's plan, Joe poses first as a lyricist and then as a composer, tricking the brothers into collaborating on a musical comedy without the other's knowledge. The show appears destined for success until the brothers discover the ruse and threaten to stop the show with an injunction. When Mrs. Russo tells her sons that she has invested heavily in their show, however, they call off their injunctions and allow the show to go on. The show is a hit, and the two sons are finally reconciled.

He explains who he is and what he is up to, and she insists on tagging along. At the port, Ferguson recognizes Keat and he and Buff are forced to accompany the gang. Ferguson plans on getting $50,000 from the Senator for his daughter's release, and he plans on using the money to finance the European sale of the jewels. Keat, knocked out while trying to escape, awakens to find himself tied on a horse being taken, with Buff, back into the mountains. Ferguson, not wishing to cut Ramirez in on the deal, bribes Pancho, a Ramirez henchie, to guide them to another hideout. Ramirez trails them and forces Ferguson to cut him in in return for safe conduct across the waterless desert. Buff's father, thinking Keat is the kidnapper, has the money dropped by airplane over a desert spot. Ferguson instructs one of his henchmen to kill Keat at the rendezvous spot but Keat is saved by Pancho, who disappears. Ferguson is about to shoot Ramirez, until the latter points out that he is their only guide out of the desert - and their water is about out.

He locates Bill and they trace the gun-butt fragment to Andy Mullins, an eccentric old prospector. They find the stolen gold, a set of jewelers tools and the missing rancher in Andy's basement. The sheriff arrives with his henchmen Hawkins and Crowley and Johnny and Bill are arrested. Instead of taking his prisoners to jail, the sheriff who is secretly the head of the gold-robbing gang, directs his henchies to take Johnny and Bill to a remote spot... and kill them.

Johnny tangles with Chet Murdock, a killer, in a saloon fight and also J notices that Mae Star, hotel proprietress, and Terry are outwardly sweethearts. Mae is actually using Terry to get information on the gold shipments, which are then hi-jacked by Murdock and his gang. Johnny, wishing to rest his own horse, borrows a pinto from Terry's corral and, while out riding the express trail, is ambushed by henchman Gus but Johnny shoots Gus instead. The dying outlaw tells Johnny he attacked him because he was riding a pinto of the type used by the express riders when they were carrying gold. Mae and Murdock, realizing the game is up, then decide to rob the Wells Fargo office and flee town. While Mae keeps Terry drunk in her saloon, Murdock kills Ben Williams and loots the Wells Fargo safe. Johnny arrives back in town and arrests the drunken Terry for complicity in the gold robberies. Mae slips Terry a gun and and helps him break jail supposedly to aid him to kill Murdock to avenge his father's death. But she leads him into a trap and Murdock cuts Terry down just as Johnny and the sheriff converge on the saloon.
