- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking.Director Alfonso Cuaron has wowed me before with his stunning work in Children of Men, not to mention the way he saved the Harry Potter franchise. Bullock and Clooney are always great, and I love a good sci fi. Most importantly, the film is supposed to be extremely groundbreaking in its filmmaking techniques. I am hugely anticipating this one as something that stands out in intelligent contrast with the big dumb sci fi films we have come to expect these days
- DirectorGeorge ClooneyStarsGeorge ClooneyMatt DamonBill MurrayAn unlikely World War II platoon is tasked to rescue art masterpieces from German thieves and return them to their owners. The film already has a good story, but with a cast like this, it is irresistible! George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin (Academy Award Winner for The Artist), Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Hugh Boneville (Dowtown Abbey). With a cast like that, my expectations could not be higher.
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsChiwetel EjioforMichael Kenneth WilliamsMichael FassbenderIn the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. As with Monuments Men, we have a great true story, and a cast that is beyond good: Chiwetel Ejiofor (such a great, underrated actor), Michael Fassebender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Quvenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry (the two leads from last year's Beasts of the Southern Wild), and Scoot McNairy (talented actor from Argo and Killing Them Softly). I can't get over just how many talented Brits are in one film...
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.Yet ANOTHER great true story with an A list cast: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Robert DeNiro, Michael Peña, and Louis C.K. Not to mention, it is being directed by David O. Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook)
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsMatt DamonJodie FosterSharlto CopleyIn the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.Given that this is from the director of District 9 (one of my all time favorite sci fi's and frankly, a favorite of the last decade, period), I would happily see this no matter what the story was. The fact that it looks to be more smart sci fi with incredible CGI makes it even more interesting. Matt Damon always makes a good lead, and I am happy to see Sharlto Copley (District 9, A-Team) getting more roles.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. This is Scorsese. He could direct footage of dogs relieving themselves for two hours and I would watch it. This looks like DiCaprio at his best, and it looks uncharacteristically funny. I will happily give this one a look!
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMichael FassbenderPenélope CruzCameron DiazA lawyer finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking.Ridley Scott hasn't given us a truly GREAT film since 2001's Black Hawk Down, but given that this is the man who directed Gladiator, Alien, and Blade Runner, his name can still suggests some damn good filmmaking...especially since the screenplay is being written by the amazing Cormac McCarthy (Pulitzer prize winning author of The Road, No Country for Old Men, and Blood Meridian). A cast that includes Michael Fassebender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, and Penelope Cruz doesn't hurt either. I'm always looking forward to a gritty crime film, so hopes for this one are high.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.Director Wes Anderson is working to get this done in time for a 2013 release, but we may not see it until next year. Given the fact that it has one of the best casts ever assembled on screen, let's hope we see it this year. It also deals with a fascinating story line and time period. The absurdly good cast includes: Ralph Fiennes, Saoirse Ronan, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Owen Wilson, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Wilkinson, Harvey Keitel, and F. Murray Abraham.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsOscar IsaacCarey MulliganJohn GoodmanA week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.The fact that The Coen Brothers are behind this one is enough already to get me interested. Add in the fact that the film revolves around New York's folk music scene in the 1960's, and features some truly talented musicians (Oscar Isaac and Marcus Mumford), as well as the incredible reviews the film received at Cannes, and we have a film that truly has me excited.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostMartin FreemanFive friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from twenty years earlier unwittingly become humanity's only hope for survival.Edgar Wright, when working with Simon Pegg has created two of my all time favorite comedies: Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Put these two, as well as their usual cast of characters back together, and the result should be one of the funniest films of the year!
